Richard II's Last Will

On 16 Apr 1399 Richard II King England 1367-1400 (32) wrote his Last Will from which the following extracts are taken … Also we bequeath to our beloved nephew Thomas Holland 1st Duke Surrey 1374-1400 (25) ten thousand marks and to our beloved brother Edward York 1st Duke Albemarle aka Aumale, 2nd Duke York 1373-1415 (26) two thousand marks and to our beloved brother John Holland 1st Duke Exeter 1352-1400 (47) three thousand marks and to our faithful and beloved William Scrope 1st Earl Wiltshire 1350-1399 (49) two thousand marks ... we ordain and set aside for the fulfilment of all and singular the premises the sum of ninety-one thousand marks, of which sixty-five thousand marks are in the keeping of Sir John Ikelyngton and twenty-four thousand marks in the hands and keeping of our dear nephew Thomas Holland 1st Duke Surrey 1374-1400 (25) .
Of this our royal testament we nominate make and depute executors the venerable fathers in Christ Richard Mitford Bishop Chichester, Bishop Salisbury -1407 , Edmund Stafford Bishop Exeter 1344-1419 (55) , Robert Tideman of Winchcombe Bishop Llandaff, Bishop Worcester -1401 , Thomas Merke Bishop Carlisle -1409 and Guy Mone Aka Mohun Bishop St David's -1407 ; our beloved brother Edward York 1st Duke Albemarle aka Aumale, 2nd Duke York 1373-1415 (26) , our nephew Thomas Holland 1st Duke Surrey 1374-1400 (25) , our brother John Holland 1st Duke Exeter 1352-1400 (47) and William Scrope 1st Earl Wiltshire 1350-1399 (49) to each of whom we bequeath a gold cup of the value of twenty pounds and our beloved and faithful clerks Master Richard Boteville Bishop Bath and Wells, Bishop Worcester, Bishop London -1421 Keeper of our Privy Seal, Master Richard Maudeleyn, Master William Fereby and Master John Ikelyngton clerks and John Lufwyk and William Serle laymen, to each of whom we will shall be paid their expenses and necessary costs while it shall happen that they or any of them are employed about the execution of our present last will, but according to the discretion of their said co-executors ...
Whom all and singular we have charged and charge that they shall do as much as in them is for the due execution and fulfilment of this our last will as they shall wish to answer before God. We create ordain depute and make overseers of this our will the reverend fathers in Christ Roger Walden Archbishop Canterbury -1406 and Richard Scrope Archbishop York 1350-1405 (49) , William bishop of Winchester and William abbot of the monastery of Westminster Edward York 1st Duke Albemarle aka Aumale, 2nd Duke York 1373-1415 (26) our uncle and Henry Percy 1st Earl Northumberland 1341-1408 (57) our cousin.

Coronation of Henry IV

On 13 Oct 1399 Henry IV King England 1367-1413 (32) was crowned IV King England: Plantagenet Lancaster at Westminster Abbey by Thomas Fitzalan Archbishop York, Archbishop Canterbury 1353-1414 (46) .
Robert Braybrooke Bishop London -1404 carried the sacraments and said mass.
The future Henry V King England 1386-1422 (13) carried the Sword Curtana. Thomas Beauchamp 12th Earl Warwick 1338-1401 (61) and/or John Beaufort 1st Marquess Somerset, 1st Marquess Dorset 1373-1410 (26) carried a sword wrapped in red and bound with golden straps symbolising two-fold mercy. Henry Percy 1st Earl Northumberland 1341-1408 (57) carried the Lancaster Sword.
Thomas Percy 1st Earl Worcester 1343-1403 (56) carried the Steward's baton. Thomas Erpingham 1355-1428 (44) carried a Sword.
Edmund Stafford 5th Earl Stafford 1378-1403 (21) was appointed as Knight of the Bath . John Lancaster 1st Duke Bedford 1389-1435 (10) , John Arundell 1366-1435 (33) and Richard Beauchamp 13th Earl Warwick 1382-1439 (17) were knighted.
Richard Scrope Archbishop York 1350-1405 (49) attended.

Northern Rising

Around Mar 1405 William Gascoigne Chief Justice 1350-1419 (55) refused to pass sentence on Richard Scrope Archbishop York 1350-1405 (55) and Thomas Mowbray 4th Earl Norfolk, 2nd Earl Nottingham 1385-1405 (19) who were accused of involvement in the Northern Rising asserting their right to be tried by peers. They were both subsequently executed.

On 27 May 1405 Richard Scrope Archbishop York 1350-1405 (55) and Thomas Mowbray 4th Earl Norfolk, 2nd Earl Nottingham 1385-1405 (19) assembled a force of around 8000 men at Shipton Moor, Shipton, Hambleton, North Yorkshire, Yorkshire .Believing they had been given safe conduct by Ralph Neville 1st Earl Westmoreland 1364-1425 (41) and assured their demands would be met, the rebel army disbanded .

Richard Scrope Archbishop York 1350-1405 (55) was beheaded . Possibly the only execution of an Archbishop that occurred in England.
Thomas Mowbray 4th Earl Norfolk, 2nd Earl Nottingham 1385-1405 (19) was beheaded . His brother John Mowbray 2nd Duke Norfolk 1392-1432 (13) succeeded as 5th Earl Norfolk (3C 1312) , 3rd Earl Nottingham (2C 1383) , 8th Baron Mowbray (1C 1283) , 9th Baron Segrave (1C 1295) .
