On 01 Jan 1801 the Act of Union came into force by which Great Britain and Ireland were united creating the United Kingdom. Actually two Acts of Union with the same title: one for the Parliament of Great Britain and one for the Parliament of Ireland.

The Chief Mourner, with his Supporters and Train-Bearer, and the several Naval Officers to whom Duties were assigned in the Solemnity, assembled at the Admiralty : the Seamen and Marines of the Victory, the Pensioners from Greenwich Hospital, the Watermen of the Deceased, the Six Conductors, the Messenger of the College of Arms, and the Marshal's-Men, with the Trumpets and Drums, were stationed in the Admiralty Yard.

Death of Princess Charlotte

On 06 Nov 1817 Princess Charlotte Augusta Hanover 1796-1817 (21) died in childbirth at Claremont House, Esher. He buried at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle.

On 13 Feb 1818 Richard Croft 6th Baronet Physician 1762-1818 (56) shot himself as a consequence of the death of Princess Charlotte Augusta Hanover 1796-1817 to whom he had been physician durig her labour. A copy of Shakespeare's Love's Labour's Lost was found open with the passage (Act V, Scene II): "Fair Sir, God save you! Where is the Princess?".

My Recollections by Adeline Horsey Countess Cardigan 1824-1915 Chapter V: Country House Visits. After my dear mother's death I visited a great deal with my father (53), and one year we went for the shooting to Lord Huntingfield's place, Heveningham Hall. I slept in the bedroom once occupied by the famous Chevalier d'Éon, who had been a frequent guest at Heveningham, and about whom there were many stories told. It was said that the Chevalier was the one and only lover of cross-grained Queen Charlotte, and that her son, George IV, was the result of their intimacy, although his paternity was of course admitted by King George III. The animosity always displayed by the old Queen to her grand-daughter, Princess Charlotte, was supposed to arise from the fact that as heiress to the throne she innocently dispossessed the other Royal Dukes from the succession. It is certainly a fact that the Princess's untimely death in childbirth was attributed to foul play at the time, and when later the accoucheur Sir Richard Croft, committed suicide, all classes of society were loud in condemnation of the Queen and the Prince Regent. I do not vouch for the accuracy of Queen Charlotte's love affair. I only give the Heveningham gossip as I heard it.
As D'Eon was undoubtedly one of the most picturesque and mysterious personages ot the eighteenth century I was naturally interested in these somewhat scandalous stories.
The ChevalierChevalier wrote his secret cipher communications, and I wondered whether the brocade crowns and frills and furbelows that he wore as a woman had ever hung in the old wardrobe which I used.
My father and I also stayed with the Westmorlands at Apethorpe Hall ; we visited the Earl (38) and Countess of Chichester (36) at Stanmer Park, and we were welcome guests at Cadlands, Silverlands, Chiswick House, West Park, and my uncle Lord Stradbroke's place, Henham Hall, which was afterwards burnt down.
I had visited Deene Park with my mother in 1842, but I must deal with my future home in the chapter devoted to Deene and its associations.

10 Feb 1840. George Hayter Painting 1792-1871 (47). Wedding of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. Hayter included portraits of fifty-six of those present at the occasion and sittings took place over the next year. The Queen (20) sat for him in March in her 'Bridal dress, veil, wreath & all', and Prince Albert (20) also posed for his portrait several times during the following months. Hayter's family too helped out with his son, Henry, modelling the Prince's costume, while his daughter Mary posed for the Queen's arm and wearing the veil. Victoria's aunt Queen Adelaide (47), however, was unwilling to co-operate and the artist had to refer to a miniature for her likeness. Hayter included himself in the painting, on the lower right, with his sketchbook and pencil.

1835 Marriage Act

In Aug 1835 the 1835 Marriage Act made marriage between those of certain degrees of affinity (in-laws) and consanguinity (blood) as defined in the Anglican Book of Common Prayer illegal including marrying the spouse of one's deceased relative. Those with sufficient funds could overcome the prohibition by marrying abroad. Gretna Green also appears to have been outside the jurisdiction of the Act.

On 28 Sep 1840 George Edward Waldegrave 7th Earl Waldegrave 1816-1846 (24) and Frances Braham Countess Waldegrave 1821-1879 (19) were married at Gretna Green thereby avoiding the constraint of the 1835 Marriage Act; he being the legitimate younger brother of her first husband.

At 5am Francis Nathaniel Conyngham 2nd Marquess Conyngham 1797-1876 (40) and William Howley Archbishop of Canterbury 1766-1848 (71) went to Kensington Palace to inform the Princess she was now Queen. On 28 Jun 1838 Lawrence Dundas 1st Marquess Zetland 1766-1839 (72) was created 1st Earl Zetland (Shetland) on the occasion of the Coronation of Queen Victoria for having provided financial assistance to the new Queen's parents, the Duke Duchess of Kent, in the years preceding her accession.

On 28 Jun 1838 Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom 1819-1901 (19) was crowned I King United Kingdom: Hanover.

Night of the Big Wind

On 06 Jan 1839 an enormous storm, known in Ireland as "Night of the Big Wind", the largest in three-hundred years, caused significant loss of life and damage in Ireland, particularly Dublin where one fifth of property was destroyed, and western Britain, partiularly Liverpool. The next day a number of passenger ships were lost.

Death of Flora Hastings

On 05 Jul 1839 Flora Elizabeth Rawdon-Hastings 1806-1839 (33) died. She had suffered a swelling in her abdomen. She refused an examinatinon and pregnancy. Rumours spread by among others Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom 1819-1901 (20) that she was pregnant. When Lady Flora (33) did finally consent to an examination she was found to an advanced cancerous liver tumour, and had only months left to live. Queen Victoria (20) visited Lady Flora on 27 Jun 1839 eight days before her death.

My Recollections by Adeline Horsey Countess Cardigan 1824-1915 Chapter VII: My Marriage. As I have previously stated, I used to see a great deal of Lord Cardigan (59) at my father's house, but he treated me quite like a jeune fille, although I was always asked to the great parties he gave during the Season. In January 1857 I went with my father to Deene, and this visit was destined to change the whole of my life.
We arrived late in the afternoon to find ourselves the additions of a great house-party, and I can picture Lord Cardigan as I saw him then, surrounded by the Duchess of Montrose (39), Lady Villiers and Mrs. Dudley Ward, who all regarded me with none too friendly eyes. Cardigan (59) told me afterwards that, when I entered the room, he realised at once I was the one woman in the world for him. He was an impulsive character, and he lost no time in letting me see the impression I had made, and I was flattered and delighted to feel that I was loved by him.
After we left Deene, Lord Cardigan followed us to London, and needless to say his marked attentions to me soon became the topic of much spiteful and jealous gossip. Those Early Victorian days were exceptionally conventional, and the Court was still as narrow-minded as when poor Lady Flora Hastings [See Death of Flora Hastings] had been the victim of its lying slander.

On 29 Aug 1842 The Treaty of Nanking signed aboard HMS Cornwallis. The peace treaty that concluded the First Opium War. The Chinese regarded it as an 'Unequal Treaty'; the British fleet were anchored in Nanking poised to attack. The treaty required the Chinese to pay the British six million silver dollars for the opium that had been confiscated by Lin Zexu in 1839 (Article IV), 3 million dollars in compensation for debts that the Hong merchants in Canton owed British merchants (Article V), and a further 12 million dollars in war reparations for the cost of the war (Article VI). The total sum of 21 million dollars was to be paid in instalments over three years and the Qing government would be charged an annual interest rate of 5 percent for the money that was not paid in a timely manner (Article VII) (See Wikipedia).

1846 Spanish Double Royal Wedding

On 10 Oct 1846 Francisco de Asís King Consort Spain 1822-1902 (24) and Isabella II Queen Spain 1830-1904 (16) were married. They were double first cousins. She was forced to marry by the Moderare Party. She, apparently commented, "what shall I tell you about a man whom I saw wearing more lace than I was wearing on our wedding night?".
