Death of the Duke of Norfolk

On 14 Jan 1476 John Mowbray 4th Duke Norfolk 1444-1476 (31) died at Framlingham Castle. Suspicious since he was only 32. His Daughter Anne Mowbray 8th Countess Norfolk 1472-1481 (3) succeeded 8th Earl Norfolk (3C 1312), 11th Baron Mowbray (1C 1283), 12th Baron Segrave (1C 1295). His only child Anne Mowbray 8th Countess Norfolk 1472-1481 (3) who inherited the vast Mowbray estates was subsequently married to Richard York 1st Duke York, 1st Duke Norfolk 1473- two years later.

On 05 Jan 1477 Charles "Bold" Valois-Burgundy Duke Burgundy 1433-1477 (43) was killed at the Battle of Nancy. His Daughter Mary Valois-Burgundy Duchess Burgundy 1457-1482 (19) succeeded Duke Burgundy.

She the last of the de Montfort family to hold the title (the Montfort family is a scion the Capet family; her father was descended from Louis VII King Franks 1120-1180. Her Daughter Claude Valois-Orleans Queen Consort France 1499-1524 (14) succeeded I Duke Brittany. Claude (14) and Francis I King France 1494-1547 (19) married after which the Duchy of Brittany and the Crown of France were combined.

On 23 Jan 1570 James Stewart 1st Earl Moray 1531-1570 (39) was assassinated at Linlithgow by James Hamilton of Bothwellhaugh, a supporter of Mary "Queen of Scots" Stewart I Queen Scotland 1542-1587 (27). His Daughter Elizabeth Stewart 2nd Countess Moray 1565-1591 (4) succeeded 2nd Earl Moray (5C 1562). As he was passing in a cavalcade in the main street below, Hamilton fatally wounded him with a carbine shot from a window of his uncle Archbishop Hamilton's house. He was the first head of government to be assassinated by a firearm.
