03 Mar 1539. Also the 3rd day of March was beheaded at Tower-hill [Map] Sir Nicholas Carew (age 43).

08 May 1539. And the 8th day of May was the gret muster in London, that all London musterd in harness, morys pikes, harquebus, hand guns, and white coats, with the mayer, sheriffs, and diverse aldermen.

09 Jul 1539. Also the 9th day of July was beheaded at Tower-hill [Map] Master Fortescue (age 63) and Master [Thomas] Dingley knights; and that same day was drawn to Tyburn two of their servants and there hanged and quartered for treason.

27 Dec 1539. This yere the 27th day of December came in lady Anne of Cleves (age 24) into England, ...

03 Jan 1540. ... and the third day of January came to Grenwych, unto the Kings grace, and there was married unto the Kings grace with great solemnity, with the mayor, aldermen, and twelve crafts, every one six1, and these rode, and all the rest of the crafts went in their barges with all their best array as the mayor is wont to go to Westmyster. And then began all the gentlewomen of England to wear French hoods with habiliments2 golde.

Note 1. Six of each of the twelve principal city companies.

Note 2. Habiliments or "biliments", as we find them constantly written, the jewelled fronts of the ladies' head-dresses, as we see them in the portraits of queen Anne Boleyne, &c. These two lines are added in a contemporary hand.

16 Mar 1540. Also this same yere the 16th day of March was one Gomer and three vagabonds with him drawn, hanged, and quartered for clipping of gold, at Tyburn.

Around Apr 1540. Also this same yere at St. Mary Spital, the three days in Easter week, preached the vicar of Stepney one Jerome1; Doctor Barnes2 the second day; and the third Garrard3, parson of Honey-lane, and there recanted and asked the people forgiveness for that they had preached before contrary to the law of God. And Doctor Barnes, that was the Austin Friar, asked there the bishop of Winchester forgiveness openly, and prayed him if he would forgive him that he would make some token and hold up his hand.

10 Jun 1540. And the 10th day of June was arrested and had unto the Tower lorde Thomas Cromwell Earl of Essex for great treason; ...

28 Jul 1540 ... and the 28th day of July was he [Thomas Cromwell 1st Earl Essex (age 55)] and Lorde Walter Hungerforthe (age 37) beheaded at at Tower Hill, Cromwell for treasone and lord Hungerforthe for buggery.

30 Jul 1540. And the 30th day of the same monyth was Doctor Barnes, Jerome and Garrard drawn from the Tower into Smithfield, and there burned for their herisies. And that same day also was drawn from the Tower with them Doctor Powell with two other priests1, and there was a gallows set up at St Bartholemews Gate, and there were hanged, headed, and quartered that same day, and their quarters set about the city.

Note 1. Abell, Powell, and Featherstone. Their religious tenets were directly opposed to those of the victims of the preceding day; but they were equally offensive to king Henry in denying his supremacy.

04 Aug 1540. And the 4th day of August was drawn from the Tower to Tyburn, Gyllys Horne gentleman, Clement Phylpot, Edmonde Bromhame, Derby Kenhame, William Horne, Robert Byrde, Jarvys Garrow, and there hanged, headed, and quartered, and their qwarters with their heddes sett up abowte the citte.

22 Dec 1540. Thys yere was draune from the tower to Tyborne the 22nd day of December [Ralph] Egertone and Thomas Harman for cleppynge of golde, and there hanged, heddyd, and qwarterd, and their qwarteres set up.

Note. Their crime was counterfeiting the king's seal in lead: see Stowe.

28 Jun 1541. Also the 28th day of June was be-heddyd at Towre hyll lorde Leonard Grey (age 62) markes, and buried within the tower.

29 Jun 1541. And the 29th of the same monyth was Lord Dacres of the South (age 26) led with the sheriffs of London unto Tyborne at after-none, and there hanged for the new acte that was made, and browte home agayne in the carte unto St Sepulchres and ther buried.

Note. Lord Dacre was hung for a murder committed in Sussex, as were his three companions named in the next paragraph.

28 Jun 1541. And the 28th day of June was hanged at St Thomas Watterrynge, Mantell, Frudus and another.

Note. For being complicit in the murder of John Busbrig.

28 Jun 1541. Item the 28th day of May was the Countess of Salisbury (deceased) behedyd within the tower.

10 Dec 1541. This year the 10th daye of December was draune from the tower to Tyborne [Thomas] Culpeper (age 27), and there was hongyd and heddyd.

13 Feb 1542. And the 13th day of February was the Queen Katherine (age 19) and Lady Rocheford (age 37) be-heddyd within the tower, and there burryd.

28 Mar 1542. And the 28th day of March there was an affray made at the Counter in Breadstreet [Map] of a sergeant at arms of the parliament house by Robert Tomsone the yeoman and Thomas Craker of the same house for arrest of Robert Taylor sergeant of maysse, the which master shreffes ware sent for to the council, and they were sent unto the tower of London, and were there a three or four dayes.

10 Mar 1542. And the 10th day of March was a maid boiled in Smithfield for poisoning of diverse persons.

1542. And this year came in the Earl of Desmond and the great O'Neill (age 62), and was created Earl of Tyrone and his son (age 12) Baron of Dungannon.
