Around 10 Mar 1592 William Hay 6th Lord Hay (age 31) died. His nephew [his father] John Hay 1st Earl Tweeddale succeeded 7th Lord Hay of Yester.

On 03 Feb 1609 [his grandfather] James Hay (age 45) died. His son [his father] John Hay 1st Earl Tweeddale (age 16) succeeded 8th Lord Hay of Yester.

On 05 Apr 1624 [his father] John Hay 1st Earl Tweeddale (age 31) and [his mother] Jean Seton Countess Tweeddale (age 18) were married. She by marriage Lord Hay of Yester. She the daughter of Alexander Seton 1st Earl Dunfermline and Grizel Leslie Countess Dunfermline. They were third cousins.

Around 13 Aug 1625 John Hay 1st Marquess Teviotdale was born to John Hay 1st Earl Tweeddale (age 32) and Jean Seton Countess Tweeddale (age 19) at Yester.

On 21 Aug 1625 [his mother] Jean Seton Countess Tweeddale (age 19) died.

Battle of Marston Moor

On 02 Jul 1644 the Battle of Marston Moor was fought near Tockwith [Map] in Yorkshire. Alexander Seton aka Montgomerie 6th Earl Eglinton (age 56) fought for the Royal army. Lionel Carey (age 22) was killed. John Hay 1st Marquess Teviotdale (age 18) fought for the Parliamentary army.

At the Battle of Marston Moor Lucas (age 31) swept Fairfax's Yorkshire horse before him, but later in the day he was taken prisoner, in a battle won decisively by Parliament.

John Dolben (age 19) fought for the Royalists.

William Eure was killed.

Philip Musgrave 2nd Baronet (age 37) fought for the Royalists.

John Fenwick (age 42) was killed.

Before 1645 John Hay 1st Marquess Teviotdale (age 19) and Jean Scott Marchioness Teviotdale were married. She the daughter of Walter Scott 1st Earl Buccleuch and Mary Hay Countess Buccleuch. He the son of John Hay 1st Earl Tweeddale (age 51) and Jean Seton Countess Tweeddale. They were half third cousin once removed.

In 1645 [his son] John Hay 2nd Marquess Teviotdale was born to John Hay 1st Marquess Teviotdale (age 19) and [his wife] Jean Scott Marchioness Teviotdale.

On 01 Dec 1646 [his father] John Hay 1st Earl Tweeddale (age 53) was created 1st Earl Tweeddale. [his mother] Jean Seton Countess Tweeddale by marriage Countess Tweeddale.

Battle of Preston

On 17 Aug 1648 John Hay 1st Marquess Teviotdale (age 23) for the Royalist army at Walton en le Dale Preston during the Battle of Preston.

Brothers William Widdrington 4th Baron Widdrington, Charles Widdrington and Peregrine Widdrington were captured and attainted. Baron Widdrington of Blankney in Lincolnshire forfeit.

On 25 May 1653 [his father] John Hay 1st Earl Tweeddale (age 60) died. His son John Hay 1st Marquess Teviotdale (age 27) succeeded 2nd Earl Tweeddale. [his wife] Jean Scott Marchioness Teviotdale by marriage Countess Tweeddale.

In 1656 [his son] David Hay was born to John Hay 1st Marquess Teviotdale (age 30) and [his wife] Jean Scott Marchioness Teviotdale.

In 1660 John Hay 1st Marquess Teviotdale (age 34) was imprisoned for supporting James Guthrie the Scottish Presbyterian minister who was exempted from the general pardon at the restoration of the monarchy and hanged in Edinburgh 01 Jun 1661.

In 1663 John Hay 1st Marquess Teviotdale (age 37) was appointed Lord President of the Scottish Council.

In 1663 [his son] Alexander Hay was born to John Hay 1st Marquess Teviotdale (age 37) and [his wife] Jean Scott Marchioness Teviotdale.

On 10 Oct 1675 [his son-in-law] Robert Ker 3rd Earl Roxburghe (age 17) and [his daughter] Margaret Hay Countess Roxburghe were married. She by marriage Countess Roxburghe. She the daughter of John Hay 1st Marquess Teviotdale (age 50) and Jean Scott Marchioness Teviotdale. He the son of William Ker 2nd Earl Roxburghe and Jane Ker Countess Roxburgh. They were second cousin once removed.

In 1692 John Hay 1st Marquess Teviotdale (age 66) was appointed Lord Chancellor of Scotland.

In 1694 John Hay 1st Marquess Teviotdale (age 68) was appointed Lord High Commissioner to the Parliament of Scotland.

Glencoe Massacre

In 1695 John Hay 1st Marquess Teviotdale (age 69) ordered an inquiry into the Glencoe Massacre.
