Biography of William Douglas 1st Duke Queensberry 1637-1695

Before 04 Jun 1630 [his father] James Douglas 2nd Earl Queensberry (age 8) and Mary Hamilton were married. She the daughter of James Hamilton 2nd Marquess Hamilton and Ann Cunningham Marchioness Hamilton (age 45). He the son of William Douglas 1st Earl Queensberry (age 48) and Isabel Kerr Countess Queensberry. They were half fourth cousins.

In 1632 John Hamilton 1st Lord of Bargeny and [his future sister-in-law] Jean Douglas (age 30) were married. She the daughter of William Douglas 1st Marquess Douglas (age 43) and Margaret Hamilton Countess Angus. They were second cousins.

On 26 Mar 1635 [his father] James Douglas 2nd Earl Queensberry (age 13) and [his mother] Margaret Stewart Countess Queensberry were married. She the daughter of John Stewart 1st Earl Traquair (age 35) and Catherine Carnegie Countess Traquair (age 35). He the son of William Douglas 1st Earl Queensberry (age 53) and Isabel Kerr Countess Queensberry. They were third cousin once removed.

In 1637 William Douglas 1st Duke Queensberry was born to James Douglas 2nd Earl Queensberry (age 14) and Margaret Stewart Countess Queensberry.

On 08 Mar 1640 [his grandfather] William Douglas 1st Earl Queensberry (age 58) died. His son [his father] James Douglas 2nd Earl Queensberry (age 18) succeeded 2nd Earl Queensberry, 2nd Viscount Drumlanrig, 2nd Lord Douglas Hawick. She the daughter of William Douglas 1st Marquess Douglas (age 68) and Mary Gordon Marchioness Douglas (age 57). He the son of James Douglas 2nd Earl Queensberry (age 34) and Margaret Stewart Countess Queensberry. They were fourth cousins.

On 01 Jan 1660 [his sister-in-law] Margaret Douglas (age 59) died.

On 18 Dec 1662 [his son] James Douglas 2nd Duke Queensberry was born to William Douglas 1st Duke Queensberry (age 25) and [his wife] Isabel Douglas Countess Queensberry (age 20).

In 1669 [his sister-in-law] Jean Douglas (age 67) died.

On 18 Jan 1670 James Drummond 1st Duke Perth (age 22) and [his sister-in-law] Jean Douglas (age 27) were married. She the daughter of William Douglas 1st Marquess Douglas and Mary Gordon Marchioness Douglas (age 70). He the son of James Drummond 3rd Earl Perth (age 55) and Anne Gordon. They were first cousin once removed.

On 21 Sep 1676 Robert Grierson 1st Baronet (age 21) and [his sister] Henrietta Douglas Lady Grierson (age 19) were married at Drumlanrig Castle or Sanquhar Castle. She the sister of William Douglas 1st Duke Queensberry (age 39). She the daughter of James Douglas 2nd Earl Queensberry and Margaret Stewart Countess Queensberry.

On 03 Nov 1684 William Douglas 1st Duke Queensberry (age 47) was created 1st Duke Queensberry. [his wife] Isabel Douglas Countess Queensberry (age 42) by marriage Countess Queensberry.

Evelyn's Diary. 10 May 1685. The Scots valueing themselves exceedingly to have ben ye first Parliament call'd by his Ma* (age 51), gave the Excise and Costomes to him and his successors for ever; yfc D. of Queensberry (age 48) making eloquent speeches, and especialy minding them of a speedy suppression of those late despe rate Field-Conventiclers who had done such unheard-of assassinations. In the meane time elections for the ensueing Parliament in England were thought to be very indirectly carried on in most places. God grant a better issue of it than some expect!

On 02 Dec 1691 [his wife] Isabel Douglas Countess Queensberry (age 49) died.

In 1695 William Douglas 1st Duke Queensberry (age 58) died. His son [his son] James Douglas 2nd Duke Queensberry (age 32) succeeded 2nd Duke Queensberry.
