On 28 Dec 1756 Admiral John Byng was subject to a court-martial aboard the 96-gun vessel HMS St George, which was anchored in Portsmouth Harbour. On 14 Mar 1757 Admiral John Byng was executed by firing squad for having been found guilty of his perceived failure to relieve the garrison at Menorca. The execution caused public outrage among fellow officers and the country at large. He was buried in the Bing Vault, All Saints Church, Southill.
