Biography of Thomas Scott 1638-1688

In 1638 Thomas Scott was born to Edward Scott and Catherine Goring although John Evelyn suggests in the entry for 16 Jul 1663 that he is the son of Prince Rupert Palatinate Simmern 1st Duke Cumberland (age 18).

In 1662 Nicholas Slanning 1st Baronet (age 18) and [his future sister-in-law] Anne Carteret were married.

In 1663 Thomas Scott (age 25) and Caroline Carteret were married.

Evelyn's Diary. 16 Jul 1663. [his father-in-law] Sir George Carteret (age 53), Treasurer of the Navy, had now married his daughter, [his wife] Caroline, to Sir Thomas Scott (age 25), of Scott's Hall, in Kent. This gentleman was thought to be the son of Prince Rupert (age 43).

Evelyn's Diary. 02 Aug 1663. This evening I accompanied Mr. Treasurer and [his father-in-law] Vice-Chamberlain Carteret (age 53) to his lately married son-in-law's, Sir Thomas Scott (age 25), to Scott's Hall. We took barge as far as Gravesend, Kent [Map], and thence by post to Rochester, Kent [Map], whence in coach and six horses to Scott's Hall; a right noble seat, uniformly built, with a handsome gallery. It stands in a park well stored, the land fat and good. We were exceedingly feasted by the young knight, and in his pretty chapel heard an excellent sermon by his chaplain. In the afternoon, preached the learned Sir Norton Knatchbull (who has a noble seat hard by, and a plantation of stately fir trees). In the churchyard of the parish church I measured an overgrown yew tree, that was eighteen of my paces in compass, out of some branches of which, torn off by the winds, were sawed divers goodly planks.

Pepy's Diary. 14 Jan 1664. Up and to the office, where all the morning, and at noon all of us, viz., [his father-in-law] Sir G. Carteret (age 54) and Sir W. Batten (age 63) at one end, and Mr. Coventry (age 36), Sir J. Minnes (age 64) and I (in the middle at the other end, being taught how to sit there all three by my sitting so much the backwarder) at the other end, to Sir G. Carteret's (age 54), and there dined well. Here I saw Mr. Scott (age 26), the bastard that married his youngest [his wife] daughter. Much pleasant talk at table, and then up and to the office, where we sat long upon our design of dividing the Controller's work into some of the rest of our hands for the better doing of it, but he would not yield to it, though the simple man knows in his heart that he do not do one part of it. So he taking upon him to do it all we rose, I vexed at the heart to see the King's service run after this manner, but it cannot be helped.

In 1665 [his father] Edward Scott died.

On 31 Jul 1665 [his brother-in-law] Philip Carteret (age 24) and Jemima Montagu were married. She the daughter of Edward Montagu 1st Earl Sandwich (age 40) and Jemima Crew Countess Sandwich (age 40).

In 1668 [his sister-in-law] Anne Carteret died.

Sr. Charles Harbord Knt. his Majesties Surveyor General, and First Lieutenant of the Royall James, under the most noble and illustrious captain Edward, Earle of Sandwich (age 46), Vice Admirall of England, which after a terrible fight maintained to admiration against a squadron of the Holland fleet for above six houres, neere the Suffolk coast, having put off two fireships, at last being utterly dissabled and few of her men remaining unhurt, was by a third unfortunately set on fire: but he (though he swam well) neglected to save himselfe as some did, and out of the perfect love to that worthy lord (whom for many yeares he had constantly accompanyed in all his honourable imployments, and in all the engagements of the former warr) dyed with him at the age of XXXIII, much bewailed of his father whom he never offended, and much beloved of all for his knowne piety, vertue, loyalty, fortitude and fidelity.

Captain John Cox was killed in action.

Admiral John Holmes (age 32) fought as commander of Rupert.

The Gloucester took part.

In 1688 Thomas Scott (age 50) died.
