The Diary of George Price Boyce 1865 is in The Diary of George Price Boyce.

05 Feb 1865. Called on Poynter (age 28) to see his competition drawings for the Old Water Colour Society. One of them, that with Ellen Smith with fan in her hand, very good. Called on Jopling.

Note.

05 May 1865. Rossetti (age 36) sent for the study he gave me, a pencil head of Ellen Smith, said it was by inadvertence he had parted with it, as he particularly wished to dispose of it with other studies of the same picture (Bride in Song of Solomon) to the purchasers of the picture. He promised me good measure" in exchange. Dined at Mills' Coffee House. The beautiful Rafiaelesque girl has left—the waiter thinks for Australia. Alas!

19 May 1865. Dined with Rossetti (age 37) and Fanny (age 30) and Howell at Chelsea. Settled to take för 50 eleven selected pencil studies of heads, R. in addition giving me one of a new model he has got to sit.

22 May 1865. Rossetti (age 37) sent down by Pope 13 pencil studies of heads, of which 2 (one of Ellen Smith and another ¾ of a new model) are gifts.

The other 11, viz, 3 of Fanny Cornforth (age 30), 2 of Ellen Smith, 1 of Ada, 1 of Mrs. Morris of Upton, £10, 1 of the negro boy, 1 of a negro girl, 1 of Mrs. Eaton, and 1 of Marie Ford I pay £60 for.

30 May 1865. Large drawing of Blackgate, Newcastle, sold to Mr. Johnson of Eton College, £45.

18 Jun 1865. To Rossetti at Chelsea. We took the 2 o'clock train from Chelsea to Bushey and walked thence to Hampton Court Palace watching the young deer on the way. After a 2 hours' spell at the pictures we returned to Cheyne Walk. Fanny made the 3rd at dinner. Howell came in and his future brother-in-law and Sandvs.

06 Aug 1865. Called on Gabriel Rossetti. He and Fanny only there. He was at work upon a drawing of a girl washing her hands, and of her lover; the former painted from Ellen Smith, the latter from Howell.

16 Nov 1865. Ellen Smith came to sit. Worked on old water colour head I made of her some time ago.

17 Nov 1865. Mr. Toynbee buys sketch of old houses and Bridge Durham, £12, and Evelyn Valley, Abinger, £10

21 Nov 1865. Mrs. Cameron's Photograph Exhibition. I bought 5 (for which, being an artist, I paid half prices). A very pretty fair girl with lovely tender eyes and light brown hair in attendance. Rossetti's blue banner has just been sold in Manchester by Gambart for K 1,500.

Note 12. Julia Cameron was the wife of a one-time President of the Indian Law Commission, and sister of Mrs. Prinsep of Little Holland House. She had two pursuits, Tennyson and photography. Her one-man exhibition at Colnaghi's, Pall Mall, ran until the following January. The photographs sold from 10s 6d to one guinea. Boyce had been misinformed of the price for the Blue Bower; Gambart had sold it for £500, not £1500.

05 Dec 1865. December 5. To Gabriel Rossetti's at Chelsea. He at home and Wm. and Fanny—Sandys and his gipsy girl (Kiomi (age 24)) there also.
