The Street is a Roman Road that travels broadly south from Melandra aka Ardotalia [Map] to Wirksworth [Map] where it joined another road which crossed the Derwent at Milford and ran on the east bank of the Derwent and to Derventio [Map] aka Derby.

For the early stages of the road information had been obtained from P. Wroe and P. Mellor (1971). "A Roman Road between Buxton and Melandra Castle, Glossop (Derbyshire Archaeological Journal 1971, Volume 91).

From Melandra aka Ardotalia [Map] the road heads broadly south through Simmondley [Map], Higher Plainsteads Farm [Map], Abbots Chair [Map], Brookhouses, Hayfield [Map], through Little Hayfield, Derbyshire [Map], Bank Vale, Hayfield [Map]. In Hayfield it appears to have followed Kinder Road [Map] until it reached Spring Vale Road [Map] where it could cross the River Sett where the steep river cliff has ended. It continued more or less straight past Highgate Head Farm, Hayfield [Map], Peep o Day [Map] following the A624 until East Meats [Map] where it heads towards Gorsty Low [Map] then Breckend [Map] and Townend [Map]

1563. Ottiwell Arnefeld of Little Hayfield made his will:

This thirty first day of May 170l I Robert SLACK the younger of Little Heyfield [Map] in the parish of Glossop and County of Derby Yeoman being Sick & Weak of body but sound and perfect mind & memory do make and ordane this my last Will and Testament in manner & fform following ffirst it is my will & mind yt all my lawful debts and ffuneral expenses be discharged forth of my personal estate

Item I give & bequeath unto Willlam SLACKE my second son the sum of thirty pounds when he shall attaine the age or twenty one years

Item I give and bequeath unto my third son John SLACKE the sum of 60 (pounds) when he shall attaine the age or twenty one years item I give and bequeath unto my three daughters Anne Elizabeth and Mary SLACK (age 33) to each the sum of fforty pounds to 'be paid when they shall attaine unto the sevll ages of twenty one years

Being Aged and infirme in Body but of sound and perfect Memory Praised be God for the same, and knowing the Certainty of Death and the uncertainty of the time when In obedience to the command of God and the example of the good King Hezechiah am minded to set my house in order and to settle my affairs in this world and to that end do Constitute make and ordaine this my last Will and Testamt in manner and form following ffirst, and principally I commend my Soul into the hands of Almighty God my Creator, and to Jesus Christ to receive full pardon of all my Sins and to be made heire of Everlasting Life and an Inheritor of his Heavenly Kingdom, and my Body to the Earth from whence it was taken to be decently interred att, or in the Parochial Chappel at Heyfield [Map] as near unto the place where my late loveing wife Ann SLACKE was interred as will Conveniency may be, And for that Worldly Estate which the Lord in mercy far above my deserts hath bestowed upon my I dispose of the same as ffolloweth.

First my will and mind is that all my Lawfull debts wch of right I owe unto any man, with all my ffuneral Charges and expences shall be ffirst paid and discharged forth of my whole Estate. And whereas by Certaine Articles of Agreemt Indented bearing date on or about the twenty ffifth day of October Anno Domny 1684. made or mentioned to be made By and Between me the said Robert SLACK on the one part and Robert SLACK my late Son now dcd of the other part I the said Robert SLACK for divers Consideracons therein mentioned, Did grant all my Lands at Little Heafield [Map], and Chinley als Mainstonefield [Map], or els where in the said County of Derby unto my said Son his heires and Assignes for ever, part of the Consideracons of which said Grant were and are particularly menconed and expresses in and by the said Articles to be That I the said Robert SLACK should not only have and receive twelve pounds per Annu. during my life, Charged upon Certaine parcels of Land of the said granted premissess, But likewise had power to Charge my said Sonn his heires Executors and Administrators, with the payment of the Sume of ffifty pounds of lawfull Money after my decease to such person or persons, as by my last will and Testament or any other writeing to be by my executed under my hand and Seal I should direct [ ]att and appoint, As by relacon had to the said Articles may more fully and at large appear And whereas the said sume of twelve pounds p Annu. has for severall years Since my said Sons decease been unpaid and is now in Arrear for the space of Seven years or upwards which in the whole amounts to the Sume of ffifty six pound, It is my will and mind and I do therefore by this my last will and Testamt in pursuance of my power and as far as in me lyes give and devise all my right & interest of in & unto such arrearages of the said twelve pounds p Annu. as abovesaid as shall happen at my decease to be in Arrear & unpaid together with the said Sume of ffifty pounds Chargable as aforesaid unto Robert SLACK my Nephew upon Condicon Nevertheless that Hee the said Robert SLACK do and shall well and faithfully pay and discharge forth of the same such Legacys & Sumes of Money as are herein and hereafter mencond (viz) unto Elizabeth MORTON my Daughter the sume of Tenn shillings within the space of one year next after my decease, unto Ann HADFIELD my Daughter the Sume of Tenn pounds, within within (sic) the space of one year next after my decease, And unto Mary CARRINGTON (age 14) my Daughter the like Sume of Tenn pounds to be paid likewise within the Space of One year next after my decease unto Dorathy SLACK my Daughter in law at Chunall [Map] the Sume of ffive shillings unto Dorathy SLACK my daughter in lw. at little Heafield the Sume of ffive shillings, unto William SLACK my Grandson the Sume of ffive shillings unto John SLACK his Brother the Sume of ffive shillings unto Ann FFOX my Grand daughter the Sume of ffive pounds when she shall have attained the Age of One and twenty years and shall be living at the time of my decease. Likewise unto Mary SLACK my Grand daughter the like Sume of ffive pounds in case she be living at the time of my decease, and shall attain to the like Age of one and twenty years and likewise unto Elizabeth SLACK my Grand daughter the like Sume of ffive pounds, if she shall attaine to the like Age of One and twenty years, and shall be living at the time of my decease Item I do bequeath unto every one of my Grandchildn excepting such as are already menconed the Sume of tenn shillings a piece to be paid within the space of one year next after my decease. Around 1782 Robert Slack was born to Robert Slack of Little Hayfield (age 28) and Mary Tym at Little Hayfield, Derbyshire [Map].

This is the last Will and Testament of me Robert SLACK the Elder of Little Hayfield in the parish of Glossop and County of Derby Yeoman first I order and direct all my just Debts to be paid and discharged by my son Robert SLACK (and do charge my real and personal Estate and Effects hereinafter given and devised to him with the payment thereof) and my funeral and Testamentary charges by my Executors hereinafter named out of my other Effects I give devise and bequeath unto my dear Wife and her Assigns for and during the Term of her natural Life any such on of my Dwellinghouses situate in the Clough [Map] as she may chuse and also the several Annuities hereinafter mentioned (making together the annual sum of fifty pounds) that is to say One Annuity or clear yearly Rent to charge or sum of Twenty pounds to be issuing and payable out of and from the Hereditaments hereinafter devised to my son Robert SLACK and one other Annuity or clear yearly Rent charge or sum of Thirty pounds to be issuing and payable out of and from the Hereditaments hereinafter devised to my sons John SLACK and Thomas SLACK by two half yearly payments respectively on every the tenth day of May and Eleventh day of November in each year the first payment thereof respectively to be made on the first of those days happening after my decease and to continue so payable during the natural Life of her my said Wife And in Case of default of payment (besides other Remedies) to be recoverable by distress and Sale in like manner as Rent in arrear And I give and bequeath unto my said Wife all my Household Goods and ffurniture and all Debts which may be owing to me at the time of my decease (except those owing for Leather) and all other my personal property and Effects whatsoever not by me otherwise disposed of absolutely and to be willed or disposed of as she may think proper.

I give and devise unto my son Robert SLACK and to his Heirs and Assigns fro ever (Subject and charged as herein mentioned) all that and those my Estate or Estates and premises at Lower Bank [Map] and Upper Bank [Map] with the round Meadow and Heyde Crofts [Map] and all the Buildings privileges and Appurtenances whatsoever thereunto respectively belonging

And I give and bequeath unto him my said son Robert all and every the Rents which at the Time of my decease may be owing to me and standing in my books being simple Contracts for the Sale of Leather only.

I give and devise unto my Daughter Ann STEEL and unto my Daughter Grace MARRIOTT equally between them share and share alike and their Heirs and Assigns for ever as Tenants in Common and not as joint Tenants all my Estate and Buildings situate and being at of near Stockport and in the County of Chester And I do hereby will direct and provide that it shall and may be lawful to and for them my said Daughters respectively notwithstanding their Coverture and they are hereby authorized and empowered from time to time and at all times after my decease freely and absolutely to dispose of all or any of the said premises so given to her or them respectively at their will and pleasure by Deed or Will or otherwise without the Control of any person or persons and as fully and amply as if they respectively were sole and unmarried I give devise and bequeath unto my two sons John SLACK and Thomas SLACK and to their Heirs and Assigns for ever as Tenants in Common and not as joint Tenants ((Subject and charged as herein mentioned) All those my Estates at Little Hayfield and Allothy [Map] as now joined together with all my Buildings factories Common Rights and privileges whatsoever belonging the same Estates And all those my three Dwellinghouses situate at the Townend [Map] in Chapel en le Frith in the said County of Derby

And I direct that [ ] of my said sons John or Thomas shall wish a conveyance of the whole of the said premises so devised to them as aforesaid to one of them, he shall mention and specify to the other of them in writing a sum of Money and shall at the option of the other of them either pay such Sum to the other of them for the Moiety of the said premises devised to the other or upon such sum being tendered to him shall convey to the other of them his Moiety thereof And the other of them shall accept or pay such sum accordingly and on refusal by either of the other shall be entitled to the whole of the same premises but my said two sons John and Thomas shall duly pay the said Annuity of thirty pounds whilst seized as Tenants in Common but not afterwards and the said premises charge therewith shall remain so vested in them until the decease of my said Wife

And I give unto my said sons John and Thomas all my Stock of Cattle ffarming Stock and Husbandry Geer (except [ ])

And I give unto my said son Thomas all my Stock of Sheep

And whereas I have given Security with my sons and sons in Law for Money borrowed and I hereby direct and provide that in case my Heirs or Executors shall be required and shall actually pay any sum or sums of Money or Expenses by or in Consequence of my having so become surety such of my Heirs or Executors shall witness and until fully repaid or reimbursed have power and authority to raise and reimburse themselves respectively all such Sum and Sums of Money and Expenses by Sale of a sufficient part of the Estate and Effects hereby given to or in ffavor of the person or persons or of the Wife or [ ] of such person or persons on whose Account such Sum or Sums shall have been paid and all Expenses incident thereto and all necessary parties interested in such Estates and Effects respectively under this my Will shall join and concur in effecting such Sale or Sales any thing herein contained to the contrary notwithstanding

And I give and bequeath unto all my children and sons in Law and Daughters in Law all such Sum and Sums of Money and Effects as I now have given and at the time of my decease may have given or advanced to them respectively or as they may owe me (except for Rent) and direct that no one or more of them shall be required to repay to my Estate any such Sum or Sums And I recommend all my Devises and Legatees not to be discontent with the provisions hereby made for them and my will is that in Case any of them shall cause any unnecessary quarrel or Suit at Law or unnecessary Trouble each of them so offending shall forfeit the Sum of One hundred pounds to the person or persons to or against whom such Suit or Suits or Trouble shall be caused or given And I further direct that my Executors hereafter named shall not nor shall any of them be answerable or accountable for the other or others of them or the Receipts Neglects or Defaults of the others of them nor with or for any Loss which may happen to my said property or Effects except through their or his own wilful Defaults but shall be entitled to deduct and retain from and out of the Trust Monies and Effects which may come to their Hands and reimburse to each other all such Costs charges and Expenses as they or any of them shall or may incur or by put unto in or about the execution or this my will And I hereby nominate constitute and appoint my said Wife, Thomas SLACK of Macclesfield in the said County of Chester Surgeon and John Gee of Kinder in the said County of Derby farmer joint Executors of this my last Will and Testament (hereby revoking all others) hoping they will see the same performs In Witness whereof I the said Robert SLACK the Testator have to this my last will and Testament set my Hand and Seal that is to say my Hand to the three preceding Sheets and my Hand and Sal to this fourth and last Sheet the thirty first day of March in the year of our Lord One thousand Eight hundred and Twenty one
