Biography of Francis Gee 1652-1723

Paternal Family Tree: Gee of Hayfield

On 28 Feb 1647 [his father] Ralph Gee of Ashes Farm (age 31) and [his mother] Anne Hurdsfield of Chapel-en-le Frith were married at St Thomas Becket's Church, Chapel en le Frith [Map].

Around 1652 Francis Gee was born to Ralph Gee of Ashes Farm (age 36) and Anne Hurdsfield of Chapel-en-le Frith.

On or before 04 Apr 1697 [his mother] Anne Hurdsfield of Chapel-en-le Frith died. She is believed to be buried at St Matthew's Church, Hayfield [Map].

On 29 Apr 1697 Francis Gee (age 45) and Margaret Booth were married. Somewhat speculative. Unknown source.

On or before 08 Apr 1698 [his son] Ralph Gee was born to Francis Gee (age 46) and [his wife] Margaret Booth. He was baptised at St Matthew's Church, Hayfield [Map] on 06 Apr 1698.

Before Dec 1698 [his daughter] Sarah Gee was born to Francis Gee (age 46) and [his wife] Margaret Booth.

On 30 Dec 1699 [his father] Ralph Gee of Ashes Farm (age 83) died. He is believed to be buried at St Matthew's Church, Hayfield [Map].

In Mar 1701 [his son] Thomas Gee was born to Francis Gee (age 49) and [his wife] Margaret Booth. Baptised at St Matthew's Church, Hayfield [Map].

On 05 Jun 1701 [his son] Thomas Gee died of smallpox. Buried at St Matthew's Church, Hayfield [Map].

On or before 11 Jan 1702 [his daughter] Ann Gee was born to Francis Gee (age 50) and [his wife] Margaret Booth. She was baptised 11 Jan 1702 at St Matthew's Church, Hayfield [Map]. Ann possibly married Edward White of Hope Parish on the 18th May 1727 at St. Mathew's Church in Hayfield.

On 08 Jan 1704 [his son] Francis Gee was born to Francis Gee (age 52) and [his wife] Margaret Booth.

Around Dec 1705 [his son] John Gee was born to Francis Gee (age 53) and [his wife] Margaret Booth. He was baptised at St Matthew's Church, Hayfield [Map].

On or before 02 Apr 1709 [his son] Daniel Gee was born to Francis Gee (age 57) and [his wife] Margaret Booth.

On 18 Nov 1710 [his wife] Margaret Booth died. She was buried at St Matthew's Church, Hayfield [Map].

Before 1721 [his former brother-in-law] John Booth of Kinder and Helen Froggatt (age 22) were married.

On 21 May 1721 [his son] Francis Gee (age 17) died of smallpox. He was buried at St Matthew's Church, Hayfield [Map].

12 Aug 1721. WILL OF [his former brother-in-law] JOHN BOOTH of Kinder - Proved October 1721

IN THE NAME of God Amen I John BOOTH of Kinder in the parish of Glossop and County of Derby being weak of body but of a sound mind and memory praise be therefore given to Almighty God do make and ordain this my present Last Will and Testament AND FORM following that is to say ffirst and principally I commend my soul into the hands of Almighty God hoping through the merits death and passion of my saviour Jesus Christ to have full and free pardon and forgiveness of all my sins and to inherit everlasting life

AND MY BODY I commit to the earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my Executors hereafter named AND AS TOUCHING such temporall estates as it hath pleased Almighty God to bestow upon me I give and dispose of thereof as followeth

IMPRIMIS I will that all my debts funeral expenses and harriotts to be paid and discharged out of my personal estate

ITEM I GIVE and bequeath all my lands in Kinder unto my wife until my son Thomas (age 2) shall attain the age of one and twenty years in trust nevertheless that she shall keep and maintain my Two children sufficiently according to their quality until they shall attain the age of one and twenty years, is she my said wife happen so long to live and keep herself unmarried

BUT IF SHE happen to marry from that time that she shall marry another husband to have no part of my [estate] real or personal save twenty pounds and her Dower

AND AFTER MY son Thomas (age 2) comes to the age of one and twenty years my then unmarried not having during the said term contracted matrimony with another husband

I GIVE AND bequeath one moiety [one of two parts of property] of all my lands in Kinder to my said wife during her life or second marriage which shall first happen

BUT AFTER HER second marriage she is to have only her said legacy of twenty pounds and her dower

ITEM I GIVE and bequeath to my son Thomas (age 2) the other moiety of said lands in Kinder when he shall attain the age of one and twenty years if my said wife be then alive and unmarried to a second husband.

BUT FROM THE time of his mothers' second marriage then two thirds of my said lands and from my wife's death all of my said lands unto my son Thomas and his heirs forever CHARGEABLE NEVER the less with the sum of sixty pounds to his sister Elizabeth when she shall attain the age of one and twenty years but if my said wife happen to die near this time or before my sad son dome to Age then my said son to pay out of my lands unto my daughter Elizabeth all my personal estate after my debts and funeral expenses are discharged except to my wife as before mentioned TOGETHER WITH THE said sum of sixty pounds or a hundred pounds charged on my said lands according to the limitations before mentioned

AND IF MY son happen to die before he attain the age of one and twenty years not having lawful issue then I GIVE AND bequeath all my said lands unto my daughter Elizabeth and her heirs forever

AND IF BOTH my said children happen to die before they attain the age of one and twenty years I give and bequeath out of my said lands and to be charged upon the same the sum of twenty pounds apiece to every child my ffather in law John FROGGATT shall have then living AND UNTO EVERY child my uncle ffrancis GEE (age 69) shall have then living the sum of ten pounds apiece to be charged on my said lands aforesaid

AND THE REMAINDER of my said lands unto my two sisters and their heirs forever

ITEM I MAKE constitute and ordain my wife Ellen BOOTH my father in law John FROGGATT and my uncle ffrancis GEE (age 69) Executors of this my Last Will and Testament hoping they will perform the trust in them REVOKING ALL OTHER wills heretofore by me made

MEMORANDUM that the word have in the ninth line in the second page And John FROGGATT in the same line was Interlined before the sealing hereof.

Before 19 Aug 1721 [his former brother-in-law] John Booth of Kinder died of smallpox. He was buried at St Matthew's Church, Hayfield [Map]. His son Thomas Booth (age 2) inherited Booth Farm, Kinder [Map].

15 Sep 1721. John Clegg's Diary. "They broke out in Kinder where two young men [[his son] Thomas Gee and [his son] Francis Gee], sons of Francis Gee (age 69) were carried off by them. Shortly after John BOOTH and his wife and one child died of that disease. A little after the family of John FROGGAT of Park Hall was visited and his eldest son John (a youth of great hopes) died and about 30 others in and about Heafield [Map], most of the families that were afflicted with them were broken." On or before 04 Oct 1721 [his former sister-in-law] Marie Booth died.

11 Sep 1723. Will of Francis Gee of Kinder (age 71)

In the name of God Amen This Eleventh day of September 1723 I ffrancis Gee of Kinder in the Parish of Glossop in the County of Derby Yeoman. Being but weakly as to my body but of Sound mind and perfect Memory Praise be thereafter given to Almighty God, and knowing the Certainty of Death but the uncertainty of this present life and being willing to leave my house in order and to settle my worldly estate so as peace and unity may remain amongst my Children and relations after my decrease, Do make this my last Will and Testament in manner following ffirst I Commit my soul onto the hands of Almighty God hoping through the Death and Merits of Jesus Christ my Savior and Redeemer to obtain remission of the sin and eternal life. And my Body I commit to the Earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my Executors hereafter named.

And as to my worldly Estate I dispose thereof as ffolloweth:

Inprimis I will that all my due debts ffuneral and Charges of the probate of this my last Will be first discharged and paid forth of my personal Estate.

Item I give devise & bequeath unto my Eldest Son [his son] Ralph Gee (age 25), all my Messuage (PREMISES) housing, Lands, and Tenements Lying in Kinder aforesaid or elsewhere as well as my New Lands as my Ancient Estate, with all their appurtenances To hold to my said son Ralph Gee (age 25) his heirs and assigns forever Upon this Condition and Consideration never-the less that my said son Ralph Gee (age 25) his heirs and assigns or some of them do and shall forth of the same, pay or cause to be paid unto his Sisters and Brothers these several Sums of money, and in such a manner following viz.

unto [his daughter] Sarah (age 24) his Sister the Sum of Sixty pounds of lawful money at the end of two years [ ] after my decease.

And unto [his daughter] Ann (age 21) his Sister the sum of Sixty pounds within the space of ffour Years next as for my decease.

And unto [his son] John (age 17) his Brother the like Sum of Sixty pounds of lawful money when he shall have attained to the age of One and twenty Years,

And unto his brother [his son] Daniel (age 14) the sum of Sixty pounds of like lawful money when he shall likewise have attained to the same age of One and twenty Years.

And it is my will and mind also that my said Younger Children (viz.) Sarah, Ann, John, and Daniel Shall all of them have liberty to the New Building both parlor and Chamber over the same, to Come to, or dwell in whilst they shall Keep themselves single and Unmarried.

Item I give unto my said son Ralph Gee (age 25), the Bed stead in the Parlor above, one table also and two fforms. And Dishboard and one great Chest in the dwelling house, and the ffire Iron there, one meal arke in the Chamber over the house and one garner at the Over Barn which I order to stand as Reire Coombs,

item I likewise give and bequeath to my said Son Ralph Gee (age 25) the one half of my quick Goods and cattle, and all my Husbandry Wares,

Item I give and bequeath unto my two Daughters Sarah and Ann One box which was their Grandmothers Standing upon the Cup Board in the house with the Linens that are therein,

Item my will and mind is that the rest of the Household Goods not as yet disposed of be equally divided amongst my ffive Children Share and Share alike.

Item I give and bequeath unto my ffour younger Children the other half of my quick Goods and Cattle.

And as touching all my Moneys whether ready money, money at Interest howsoever I give and Bequeath the same to All my said Children Sons or Daughters to be equally divided amongst them. And lastly I do make Ordain Constitute and appoint my well beloved Son John Gee (age 17), and my loving kinsman ffrancis Gee of Chinley my full and Joint Executors of this my last Will and Testament hoping they will faithfully perform the trust I have herein [reposed] in them

And I desire that Brotherly love and Unity may remain amongst my beloved Children revoking all other and former Wills by me heretofore made, publishing this and none other to be my Will and Testament. In Witness whereof I the said ffrancis Gee have hereunto put my hand and seal the day and Year ffirst above written.

PROBATE GRANTED on the 28th January 1724 for Gee, Francis, of Kinder, Yeoman, 11 September 1723. Eldest son Ralph Gee, sisters Sarah & Ann Gee, brothers John and Daniel Gee, son John Gee of Chinley.

WITNESSES: Thomas BENNETT, John WATERHOUSE, William CARRINGTON.

APPRAISERS of Inventory: John MOULT & Edmund BRADBURY, 28th January 1723/1724: Total £273-7-0.

On or before Oct 1723 Francis Gee (age 71) died. [his son] Ralph Gee (age 25) inherited Ashes Farm, Kinder [Map].

The Will of Ann Barnes of Stones House [Map], Kinder: In the name of God Amen the sixth day of October Ano Dom 1696 I Ann Barnes of Stones House [Map] Kinder in the parish of Glossop in the County of Derby said and being aged and Weak in Body but of sound mind and Good memory praised be God for ye sound doo ordain and make this my Last Will and Testament in manner and form following SO IS FFIRST principally I commit my soul unto the hands of Almighty God my creator hoping through the merits of Jesus Christ my Alone Savior redeemer to obtain free pardon and remission of all my sins & doo make ptaker [partake] of life everlasting AND MY BODY I commit to ye earth from whence it was taken to bee decently interred at the discretion of my executor HEREINAFTER NAMED AND AS TOUCHING my worldly estate I dispose there in manner following that is to say my will and mind is that my funeral expenses shall be paid out of my whole estate

ITEM I GIVE and bequeath unto my grandchildren Ralph ANDREW and John Hall to either of them one pound and ten shillings of Lawful money of England

ITEM I GIVE and bequeath to the said Ralph ANDREW thee bedstead upon which I now lye and my part of all such stock of hives of Bees as are abroad at parts other than such at Row Stand at Stones house [Map] aforesaid

I GIVE to my daughter Martha and other [ ] such at Stand at South Head which I give to Elizabeth ANDREW my grandchild to I bequeath ten shillings

ITEM I GIVE and bequeath unto my grandchild Mary Hall the like sum of ten shillings

AND TO ffrancis Gee son and heir of [his father] Ralph Gee of Kinder aforesaid I bequeath the sum of twenty shillings and two ewes and lambs forth of such are kept to parts of Stones House [Map] aforesaid whom I appoint to divide [the] same

ITEM I GIVE bequeath unto my daughter Martha my best coat and waistcoat my dishboard and all my loose boards and shelves in my dwelling house

ITEM I GIVE to my son in law Thomas Hall two shillings AND TO MARY wife of Edmund Barnes of Barnes Fould two shillings

ITEM I GIVE to my said grand child John Hall the great coffer in the parlor where I live

ALL THE REMAINDER of my goods and chattels not herein before disposed of I give to my two daughters MARY and MARTHA equally to be divided between them

ITEM I DOO nominate and Appoint my son in law John ANDREW and the said ffrancis Gee Executors of this my Last Will and Testament. Note. This was possibly the same ffrancis Gee was "executor to the last will of John Booth, his nephew-in-law, who was married to Ellen FROGGATT in October 1721."

A TRUE INVENTORY of the Goods Credits and Chattels of Ann Barnes Late of Stones House [Map] in the Parrish of Glossop in the County of Derby widow deed taken and appraised the 24th day of October 1696 by us whose names are subscribed as followeth: There are 22 lines not printed here.
