Biography of Charles Dormer 2nd Earl Carnarvon 1632-1709

1643 First Battle of Newbury

1694 Invitation to William of Orange from the Immortal Seven

Before 1632 [his father] Robert Dormer 1st Earl Carnarvon (age 21) and [his mother] Anne Sophia Herbert Countess Carnarvon were married. She the daughter of [his grandfather] Philip Herbert 4th Earl Pembroke 1st Earl Montgomery (age 47) and [his grandmother] Susan Vere Countess Montgomery.

On 25 Oct 1632 Charles Dormer 2nd Earl Carnarvon was born to Robert Dormer 1st Earl Carnarvon (age 22) and Anne Sophia Herbert Countess Carnarvon.

Archaeologia Volume 13 Section XXV. From the Baptisms is this entry.

"The lord Dormer, viscount Askot, eldest son to the right honourable the [his father] earl of Carnarvon (age 22), was born on Fryday Oct. 25, and christened [Note. at St Benet's Church, Paul's Wharf [Map]] on Tuesday November 26, 1632."

Robert Dormer, baron Dormer of Winge, and baronet, was created by king Charles I. viscount Ascot, and earl of Caernarvon, August 2, 1628. This nobleman, alike distnguished for his virtue, wisdom, and valour, fell after the battle of Newberry, Sept. 20, 1643, in his return from pursuing a party of the parliamentary forces, being killed by a trooper, who, knowing his lordship, ran, him through the body with a sword, and he expired in about an hour. He married [his mother] Anna-Sophia, daughter of [his grandfather] Philip (age 48), earl of Pembroke and Montgomery, by whom he had an only child, whose birth and baptism are mentioned above. He was William [Note. A mistake for Charles?], the second earl of Caernarvon, who dying November 29, 1709, without male issue, that title became extinct, but the barony descended to the issue of Anthony Dormer, of Grove Park, in Warwickshire, second son of Robert, the first lord Dormer; but after being possessed by Robert [Note. Rowland?], the eldest son of that Anthony, it went to the issue male of Robert, the third son of the first baron, and is still posssessed by that branch.

First Battle of Newbury

On 20 Sep 1643 the First Battle of Newbury was fought at Newbury, Berkshire [Map] with King Charles I of England, Scotland and Ireland (age 42) commanding the Royalist army and Robert Devereux 3rd Earl Essex (age 52) commanding the victorious Parliamentary army. For King Charles I of England, Scotland and Ireland John Byron 1st Baron Byron (age 44) fought with distinction.

Henry Bertie was killed.

[his father] Robert Dormer 1st Earl Carnarvon (age 33) was killed. His son Charles Dormer 2nd Earl Carnarvon (age 10) succeeded 2nd Earl Carnarvon, 3rd Baron Dormer of Wyng in Buckinghamshire, 3rd Baronet Dormer of Wyng in Buckinghamshire.

William Villiers 2nd Viscount Grandison (age 29) was killed. His brother John Villiers 3rd Viscount Grandison succeeded 3rd Viscount Grandison.

Edward Villiers (age 23) fought.

Lucius Carey 2nd Viscount Falkland (age 33) was killed. His son Lucius Carey 3rd Viscount Falkland (age 11) succeeded 3rd Viscount Falkland.

Richard Neville (age 28) served under the Earl Carnarvon. Carnarvon was killed and Neville took up the command as a Colonel of Horse.

Major General Charles Fleetwood (age 25) was wounded.

Before 25 Jun 1652 Charles Dormer 2nd Earl Carnarvon (age 19) and Elizabeth Capell Countess Carnarvon (age 19) were married. She by marriage Countess Carnarvon. He the son of Robert Dormer 1st Earl Carnarvon and Anne Sophia Herbert Countess Carnarvon. They were fourth cousins.

On 25 Jun 1652 [his son] Charles Dormer was born to Charles Dormer 2nd Earl Carnarvon (age 19) and [his wife] Elizabeth Capell Countess Carnarvon (age 19).

In 1653 [his daughter] Elizabeth Dormer Countess Chesterfield was born to Charles Dormer 2nd Earl Carnarvon (age 20) and [his wife] Elizabeth Capell Countess Carnarvon (age 20) in Wing, Buckinghamshire.

On 19 May 1653 [his brother-in-law] Arthur Capell 1st Earl Essex (age 21) and Elizabeth Percy Countess Essex (age 17) were married. She the daughter of Algernon Percy 10th Earl of Northumberland (age 50) and Anne Cecil.

Before 25 Dec 1660 Henry Somerset 1st Duke Beaufort (age 31) and [his sister-in-law] Mary Capell Duchess Beaufort (age 30) were married. He the son of Edward Somerset 2nd Marquess Worcester (age 58) and [his sister] Elizabeth Dormer.

After Jul 1665 [his son-in-law] Philip Stanhope 2nd Earl Chesterfield (age 31) and [his daughter] Elizabeth Dormer Countess Chesterfield (age 12) were married. She by marriage Countess Chesterfield. She the daughter of Charles Dormer 2nd Earl Carnarvon (age 32) and [his wife] Elizabeth Capell Countess Carnarvon (age 32). He the son of Henry Stanhope and Katherine Wotton Countess Chesterfield (age 56). They were third cousin once removed.

On 03 Apr 1667 Edward Somerset 2nd Marquess Worcester (age 65) died. His son Henry Somerset 1st Duke Beaufort (age 38) succeeded 3rd Marquess Worcester, 7th Earl Worcester, 9th Baron Herbert of Raglan. [his sister-in-law] Mary Capell Duchess Beaufort (age 36) by marriage Marchioness Worcester.

Pepy's Diary. 05 May 1667. We talked of Tangier, of which he is ashamed; also that it should put the King (age 36) to this charge for no good in the world: and now a man going over that is a good soldier, but a debauched man, which the place need not to have. And so used these words: "That this place was to the King as my Lord Carnarvon (age 34) says of wood, that it is an excrescence of the earth provided by God for the payment of debts".

In Nov 1677 [his daughter] Elizabeth Dormer Countess Chesterfield (age 24) died.

In 1678 [his wife] Elizabeth Capell Countess Carnarvon (age 45) died.

After 1678 Charles Dormer 2nd Earl Carnarvon (age 45) and Mary Bertie Countess Carnarvon (age 23) were married. She by marriage Countess Carnarvon. The difference in their ages was 22 years. She the daughter of Montagu Bertie 2nd Earl Lindsey and Bridget Wray Countess Lindsey. He the son of Robert Dormer 1st Earl Carnarvon and Anne Sophia Herbert Countess Carnarvon. They were second cousin once removed.

On 30 Nov 1682 [his brother-in-law] James Bertie 1st Earl of Abingdon (age 29) was created 1st Earl Abingdon. Eleanor Lee Countess Abingdon by marriage Countess Abingdon.

On 02 Dec 1682 Henry Somerset 1st Duke Beaufort (age 53) was created 1st Duke Beaufort by King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland (age 52). [his former sister-in-law] Mary Capell Duchess Beaufort (age 52) by marriage Duchess Beaufort.

On 13 Jul 1683 [his former brother-in-law] Arthur Capell 1st Earl Essex (age 51) committed suicide at the Tower of London [Map]. He was buried at St Peter ad Vincula Church, Tower of London [Map]. He was said to have been discovered in his chamber with his throat cut whilst awaiting execution for treason. His son Algernon Capell 2nd Earl Essex (age 12) succeeded 2nd Earl Essex, 3rd Baron Capell Hadham.

Invitation to William of Orange from the Immortal Seven

In 1694 Thomas Osborne 1st Duke Leeds (age 61) was created 1st Duke Leeds by King William III of England, Scotland and Ireland (age 43) in recognition of Thomas Osborne 1st Duke Leeds 1632-1712's support of the Glorious Revolution he having been one of the signatories of the Invitation to William of Orange from the Immortal Seven. [his sister-in-law] Bridget Bertie Duchess Leeds (age 65) by marriage Duchess Leeds.

On 22 May 1699 [his brother-in-law] James Bertie 1st Earl of Abingdon (age 45) died. His son Montagu Venables Bertie 2nd Earl of Abingdon (age 26) succeeded 2nd Earl Abingdon, 6th Baron Norreys of Rycote.

On 09 May 1701 [his brother-in-law] Robert Bertie 3rd Earl Lindsey (age 70) died. His son Robert Bertie 1st Duke Ancaster and Kesteven (age 40) succeeded 4th Earl Lindsey, 17th Baron Willoughby de Eresby. Albinia Farington Duchess Ancaster and Kesteven by marriage Countess Lindsey.

On 07 Jan 1704 [his sister-in-law] Bridget Bertie Duchess Leeds (age 75) died.

In 1709 [his wife] Mary Bertie Countess Carnarvon (age 54) died.

On 29 Nov 1709 Charles Dormer 2nd Earl Carnarvon (age 77) died. Earl Carnarvon extinct. His second cousin Rowland Dormer 4th Baron Dormer (age 58) succeeded 4th Baron Dormer of Wyng in Buckinghamshire, 4th Baronet Dormer of Wyng in Buckinghamshire.

[his son] Anna Sophia Dormer was born to Charles Dormer 2nd Earl Carnarvon and Elizabeth Capell Countess Carnarvon.
