Biography of Henry Danvers 1st Earl Danby 1573-1644

Paternal Family Tree: Danvers

Maternal Family Tree: Aoife NI Diarmait Macmurrough Countess Pembroke and Buckingham 1145-1188

In or before 1568 [his father] John Danvers (age 28) and [his mother] Elizabeth Neville (age 17) were married.

On 28 Jun 1573 Henry Danvers 1st Earl Danby was born to John Danvers (age 33) and Elizabeth Neville (age 23) at Dauntsey, Wiltshire.

On 22 Apr 1577 [his grandfather] John Neville 4th Baron Latimer of Snape (age 57) died. He was buried at St Michaels Church, Well. Baron Latimer of Snape abeyant between daughters [his aunt] Katherine Neville Countess Northumberland (age 32), [his aunt] Dorothy Neville Countess Exeter (age 29), [his aunt] Lucy Neville (age 28) and [his mother] Elizabeth Neville (age 27).

On 23 Jul 1577 Thomas Wenman (age 29) died. He left significant debts to the Crown requiring some of his lands to be sold. Eaton, Berkshire was sold to [his father] John Danvers (age 37) for £7700. Richard Wenman 1st Viscount Wenman (age 4) was made a ward of his mother Jane West (age 19) and Robert Dudley 1st Earl of Leicester (age 45). Robert Dudley 1st Earl of Leicester sold his interest to James Cressy who subsequently married Jane West.

On 19 Dec 1594 [his father] John Danvers (age 54) died said to have been of a broken heart following the disgrace of his sons [his brother] Charles Danvers (age 26) and Henry Danvers 1st Earl Danby (age 21).

In 1598 [his step-father] Edmund Carey (age 40) and [his mother] Elizabeth Neville (age 48) were married. The marriage was, perhaps, a means of procuring a pardon for her two sons who had previously shot and killed a neighbour, and fled abroad. A payment was made to the bereaved family and the sons were allowed to return. They were fourth cousins.

On 05 Jan 1626 Henry Danvers 1st Earl Danby (age 52) was created 1st Earl Danby.

In 1630 [his mother] Elizabeth Neville (age 80) died.

On 20 Jan 1644 Henry Danvers 1st Earl Danby (age 70) died at Earl of Danby's House Cornbury Park, Oxfordshire. After 20 Jan 1644 Henry Danvers 1st Earl Danby was reburied at St James' the Great Church, Dauntsey. Earl Danby extinct.

Evelyn's Diary. 18 Oct 1664. At Oxford. Went through Woodstock, Oxfordshire [Map], where we beheld the destruction of that royal seat and park by the late rebels, and arrived that evening at Cornbury, a house lately built by the Earl of Denbigh [Note. Mistake by Evelyn; should be Earl of Danby], in the middle of a sweet park, walled with a dry wall. The house is of excellent freestone, abounding in that part, (a stone that is fine, but never sweats, or casts any damp); it is of ample dimensions, has goodly cellars, the paving of the hall admirable for its close laying. We designed a handsome chapel that was yet wanting: as Mr. May (age 43) had the stables, which indeed are very fair, having set out the walks in the parks and gardens. The lodge is a pretty solitude, and the ponds very convenient; the park well stored.

On 27 Jun 1674 Thomas Osborne 1st Duke Leeds (age 42) was created 1st Earl of Danby when he surrendered his Scottish Viscount Osborne to his third son Peregrine Osborne (age 15). He, Thomas, was on his mother's side a great-nephew of the previous Earl of Danby who was brother to Anne's mother [his sister] Eleanor Danvers.

Brief Lives: Elizabeth Danvers. [716]His[CY] [his mother] mother, an Italian, prodigious parts for a woman. I have heard my father's mother say that she had Chaucer at her fingers' ends.

A great politician; great witt and spirit, but revengefull[717].

Knew how to manage her estate as well as any man; understood jewells as well as any jeweller.

Very beautifull, but only short-sighted. To obtain pardons for her sonnes[718] she maryed Sir Edmund Carey, cosen-german to queen Elizabeth, but kept him to hard meate.

Smyth of Smythcotes-Naboth's vineyard-digitus Dei[CZ].

Notes.

Note 716. MS. Aubr. 8, fol. 25.

Note 717. Aubrey, in the margin, notes 'Anne Bulleyn.'

Note 718. For the murder of Henry Long.

[CY]. i.e. Henry, earl of Danby's. She was Elizabeth, daughter of [his grandfather] John Nevill, the last lord Latimer. 'An Italian' may mean that she knew that language, among her other accomplishments. I can make nothing of a note added by Aubrey here, which seems to read '... Cowley, crop-ear'd.'

[CZ]. I do not know to what circumstance, in the history of the Danvers family, Aubrey here applies 1 Kings xxi. 19.

[DA]. Catherine Parr, last consort of Henry VIII, was widow of John, 3rd lord Latimer; and step-mother of John, 4th lord Latimer, the father of this Elizabeth Danvers, whose grand-daughter ('viscountess Purbeck') was Aubrey's informant.
