Biography of William Cavendish 6th Duke Devonshire 1790-1858

On 07 Jun 1774 [his father] William Cavendish 5th Duke Devonshire (age 26) and [his mother] Georgiana Spencer Duchess Devonshire (age 17) were married in St Mary's Church, Wimbledon. It was her 17th birthday. She by marriage Duchess Devonshire. She the daughter of [his grandfather] John Spencer 1st Earl Spencer (age 39) and [his grandmother] Margaret Georgiana Poyntz Countess Spencer (age 37). He the son of [his grandfather] William Cavendish 4th Duke Devonshire and [his grandmother] Charlotte Elizabeth Boyle Marchioness Hartington. They were fourth cousins.
Around 1785 Edensor, Chatsworth William Cavendish 6th Duke Devonshire, working with Joseph Paxton relocated Edensor, Chatsworth, possibly so that it could no longer be seen from Chatsworth House [Map]. One the east of the original village one house was left in situ being occupied by an elderly retainer Anthony Holmes. It was walled around to protect it against deer and cattle. Six houses were left in-situ although they were modified to include ornamental chimneys. The new village was provided with allotments, a small prison and a mortuary.
On 21 May 1790 William Cavendish 6th Duke Devonshire was born to William Cavendish 5th Duke Devonshire (age 42) and Georgiana Spencer Duchess Devonshire (age 32) at Paris [Map].
In 1809 [his father] William Cavendish 5th Duke Devonshire (age 61) and [his step-mother] Elizabeth Christiana Hervey Duchess Devonshire (age 51) were married. She by marriage Duchess Devonshire. She the daughter of Frederick Augustus Hervey 4th Earl Bristol and Elizabeth Davers Countess Bristol. He the son of [his grandfather] William Cavendish 4th Duke Devonshire and [his grandmother] Charlotte Elizabeth Boyle Marchioness Hartington.
On 29 Jul 1811 [his father] William Cavendish 5th Duke Devonshire (age 63) died. His son William Cavendish 6th Duke Devonshire (age 21) succeeded 6th Duke Devonshire, 9th Earl Devonshire, 9th Baron Cavendish Hardwick, 8th Baron Clifford.

On 19 Jul 1821 King George IV of Great Britain and Ireland (age 58) was crowned IV King Great Britain and Ireland.
King George IV of Great Britain and Ireland barred Caroline of Brunswick Queen Consort England (age 53) from attending the Coronation. She attempted to attend but was turned away at the doors of Westminster Abbey. Refused entry at both the doors to the East Cloister and the doors to the West Cloister, Caroline attempted to enter via Westminster Hall, where many guests were gathered before the service began. A witness described how the Queen stood at the door fuming as bayonets were held under her chin until the deputy lord chamberlain had the doors slammed in her face. Henry Brougham recorded his distaste.1. She died three weeks later.
William Cavendish 6th Duke Devonshire (age 31) carried the Orb at Westminster Abbey [Map].
Kenneth Alexander Howard 1st Earl of Effingham (age 53) attended as Deputy Earl Marshal as a result of Henry Howard-Molyneux-Howard (age 54).

In 1827 William Cavendish 6th Duke Devonshire (age 36) was appointed 663rd Knight of the Garter by King George IV of Great Britain and Ireland (age 64).
On 25 Jul 1832 [his illegitimate half-brother] Augustus Clifford 1st Baronet (age 44) was appointed Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod by his half-brother William Cavendish 6th Duke Devonshire (age 42) which office he held for life.
On 18 Jan 1858 William Cavendish 6th Duke Devonshire (age 67) died at Hardwick Hall [Map]. He was buried in the Cavendish Plot, St Peter's Church, Edensor [Map]. His first cousin once removed William Cavendish 7th Duke Devonshire (age 49) succeeded 7th Duke Devonshire, 10th Earl Devonshire, 10th Baron Cavendish Hardwick.
