Pepy's Diary. 21 Feb 1668. Thence with Brouncker and T. Harvey to Westminster Hall [Map], and there met with Colonel Birch (age 52) and Sir John Lowther, and did there in the lobby read over what I have drawn up for our defence, wherein they own themselves mightily satisfied; and Birch, like a particular friend, do take it upon him to defend us, and do mightily do me right in all his discourse. Here walked in the Hall with him a great while, and discoursed with several members, to prepare them in our business against to-morrow, and meeting my cozen Roger Pepys (age 50), he showed me Granger's written confession1, of his being forced by imprisonment, &c., by my Lord Gerard (age 50), most barbarously to confess his forging of a deed in behalf of Fitton (age 38), in the great case between him [Fitton] and my Lord Gerard; which business is under examination, and is the foulest against my Lord Gerard that ever any thing in the world was, and will, all do believe, ruine him; and I shall be glad of it.
Note 1. Pepys here refers to the extraordinary proceedings which occurred between Charles, Lord Gerard, and Alexander Fitton, of which a narrative was published at the Hague in 1665. Granger was a witness in the cause, and was afterwards said to be conscience-stricken from his perjury. Some notice of this case will be found in North's "Examen", p. 558; but the copious and interesting note in Ormerod's "History of Cheshire", Vol. iii., p. 291, will best satisfy the reader, who will not fail to be struck by the paragraph with which it is closed-viz., "It is not improbable that Alexander Fitton, who, in the first instance, gained rightful possession of Gawsworth [Map] under an acknowledged settlement, was driven headlong into unpremeditated guilt by the production of a revocation by will which Lord Gerard had so long concealed. Having lost his own fortune in the prosecution of his claims, he remained in gaol till taken out by James II to be made Chancellor of Ireland (under which character Hume first notices him), was knighted, and subsequently created Lord Gawsworth after the abdication of James, sat in his parliament in Dublin in 1689, and then is supposed to have accompanied his fallen master to France. Whether the conduct of Fitton was met, as he alleges, by similar guilt on the part of Lord Gerard, God only can judge; but his hand fell heavily on the representatives of that noble house. In less than half a century the husbands of its two co-heiresses, James, Duke of Hamilton (age 9), and Charles, Lord Mohun, were slain by each other's hands in a murderous duel arising out of a dispute relative to the partition of the Fitton estates, and Gawsworth itself passed to an unlineal hand, by a series of alienations complicated beyond example in the annals of this country". 1850 to 1853. Alfred Gatley (age 33). Echo, 1850 1853, Gawsworth Hall, Cheshire [Map]. Gatley sculpted at least three versions of Echo on request from clients. One of these is at Gawsworth, another is thought to be in Ireland, and the present whereabouts of the third is not known. One copy was sold at Christies in 1993, and sold on in 1997 by Lord & Lady White of Hull to an unidentified buyer for $29,900.

Flintshire Historical Society Volume 12. The Second Stage
We now come to the third of our five accounts, which covers the period 30 November 1277 to 5 March 1279, a period of 15 months, including the whole building 'season' of 1278. How much the pace of the work at Flint had slowed is evident from this simple comparison: that the wages paid during these 15 months amounted to no more than £727 4s. ½d., whereas in the preceding 13 weeks they had been £440 11S. 8d., Two other points also stand out in this third account. Firstly, the only wages paid to masons were for dressing stone in a quarry at Nesshead.'28 This seems to mean that no masons were working on the actual site of Flint during these fifteen months, and if that was so, we seem to be left with the rather unexpected deduction that no masonry was erected at Flint between November 1277 and March 1279. Secondly, this account records the paying of wages to a plumber for putting lead roofing on ' towers in the castle.'29 The account simply says 'towers' in the plural; it does not say how many or which towers were roofed: but as the plural is used, there were presumably at least two, and there would not in any case be more than four. The amount of wages paid to the plumber suggests the minimum rather than the maximum number. But the important point is this. Towers would not be roofed with lead until they had been built to their full height. But if we are justified in the previous inference that no masonry was erected at Flint between November 1277 and March 1279, any towers that were roofed during that period had presumably been built to their full height before November 1277. If so, then we have a clue to what the masons employed between July and November 1277 had been doing: they had probably been employed largely upon the towers of the castlc, and they had apparently completed the masonry of at least two of them.
Note 28. Presumably near the little village of Ness in the Wirral, right opposite Flint; and therefore the stone could be brought across by boat. The account states that this particular lot of stone was 'for paving (which presumably means 'revetting') the ditch around the castle of Flint,' but goes on to remark that the ditch was not however paved with this stone in the time of the aforesaid Nicholas (i.e. Nicholas Bonel, the clerk of the works who rendered the account for the period 30 November 12 to 5 March 1279), but turves.' Dr. E. Neaverson already suggested, on purely geological grounds, that some of the stone in the castle 'resembles the Middle Bunter sandstone of Wirral and Chester' (Medieval Castles in North Wales, p. 41): we may now add the quarry or at any rate one the quarrie, was near Ness.
Note 29. Et in stipendiis cuiusdam plumbarii cooperientis turres (sic in full) in estro predicto per predictum tempus 24s.'
