Archaeologia Volume 32 Section X. The Queen of Scots (age 25) landed on the shore of Cumberland on the 16th of May, 1568. On the next day she wrote from Workington to Queen Elizabeth (age 34), announcing her arrival. On the 18th she was conducted to Cockermouth, and the next day to Carlisle [Map]. There she remained till the 13th of July, when she was taken to Bolton [Map], castle of the Lord Scrope (age 34), in the North Riding. She was at Bolton for more than half a year. Her last letter written from that place is dated January 25, 1569, the day before she reluctantly set out on her journey southward.

Archaeologia Volume 32 Section X. The order of Council for the removal of the Queen of Scots from Bolton [Map] was not actually signed before the 20th of January, 1569. She travelled with uneasy steps, dejected in mind, and out of health. Letters exist written by her at almost every stage of her journey, namely, at Ripon [Map] on the 27th, at Pontefract [Map] on the 28th, and at Rotherham [Map] on the 30th. Here she was obliged to leave one of her ladies, Lady Levingston, who was ill: and she was herself so much indisposed that, instead of proceeding as she intended to Chesterfield on the 1st of February, she was obliged to stay at the house of Mr. Foljambeb. On the 2nd or 3rd of February, however, she arrived at Tutbury [Map], where both the earl and the countess were ready to receive her. Up to this time it is of course manifest that she cannot have stayed at Hardwick [Map]. We have however now seen her committed to the charge of the persons to whom Hardwick, that is the estate of Hardwick [Map], and whatever buildings might then be upon it, at that time or soon after belonged. The Countess of Shrewsbury was a daughter of the house of Hardwick, the daughter of John Hardwick, who died in 1528; she was not his heir or coheir, for she had a brother, James Hardwick, who succeeded to the family inheritance, the exact date of whose death or the time when he disposed of his lands to his prosperous and wealthy sister being alike unknown. However there is this in favour of the opinion of Hardwick [Map] having been one of the places connected with the residence of the Queen of Scots in England, that it was, from the time when the Queen was first placed under the charge of the Earl of Shrewsbury, a place belonging either to the countess or her brother, and certainly, in the later years of the queen's residence with the earl, to the countess herself. And this is evidently the basis of the received opinion on this subject, falling in, as it does, with the natural desire to connect the place with a story of royal misfortune and national importance.

Note b. This could not have been Walton [Map], near Chesterfield, as might be supposed, that being then the chief house of the Foljambes, because Walton is beyond Chesterfield, as the Queen was then travelling. If it did not rather appear that she set out on her journey from Rotherham [Map], the house intended would be Aldwark [Map], one of the seats of the Foljambes, a short distance from Rotherham [Map], but to the north. Junior branches of the family had at that period a house at Barlborough, and also Moor Hall, both not far out of what may have been the road on which she travelled; but the precise line is not at present, I apprehend, determinable.

From the Darlington & Stockton Times of October 16, 1920:

"The weather was beautifully fine, with brilliant sunshine showing to advantage the autumn tints of the well wooded countryside," began the lengthy report. "Although difficult to access, Gilling was early a scene of activity with motor coaches, motor cars and other means of conveyance converging on the village in the rapid succession. The lengthy highway through the village was thronged with motor vehicles and the queue of cars was finally over half a mile in length."

...

"The bride was charmingly attired in old parchment duchesse satin, skirt artistically draped, with corsage of softly blended chiffon, embroidered in fine diamanti," said the paper, recording every single sartorial detail. "The Court train was of white and gold brocade, weighted at hem and sides with bands of cloth of gold tissue, held in place by two handsome gold and diamanti ornaments…"

The D&S said how after the reception at the Grange, the couple motored to London and then honeymooned on their Shropshire estate.

"The bride's travelling dress was of Indian red crepe de chine, finely pleated skirt and long travelling coat of Indian red velour cloth trimmed with natural racoon," it said.

It then devoted thousands of words to a list of wedding presents. Suffice to say that the happy couple would never again go short of fish knives and cigar cases, cigar cutters and cigarette holders.

Bede. HOW CEADDA, ABOVE-MENTIONED, WAS MADE BISHOP OF THE MERCIANS. OF HIS LIFE, DEATH, AND BURIAL.

At that time, the Mercians were governed by King Wulfhere, who, on the death of Jaruman, desired of Theodore to supply him and his people with a bishop; but Theodore would not obtain a new one for them, but requested of King Oswy that Ceadda might be their bishop. He then lived retired at his monastery, which is at Lestingau, Wilfrid filling the bishopric of York, and of all the Northumbrians, and likewise of the Picts, as far as the dominions of King Oswy extended. And, seeing that it was the custom of that most reverend prelate to go about the work of the Gospel to several places rather on foot than on horseback, Theodore commanded him to ride whenever he had a long journey to undertake, and finding him very unwilling to omit his former pious labour, he himself, with his hands, lifted him on the horse; for he thought him a holy man, and therefore obliged him to ride wherever lie had need to go. Ceadda having received the bishopric of the Mercians and Lindisfarne, took care to administer the same with great rectitude of life, according to the example of the ancients. King Wulfhere also gave him land of fifty families, to build a monastery, at the place called Barvc, or "The Wood," in the province of Lindsey, wherein marks of the regular life instituted by him continue to this day.

Bede. He had his episcopal see in the place called Litchfield [Map], in which he also died, and was buried, and where the see of the succeeding bishops of that province still continues. He had built himself a habitation not far from the church wherein he was wont to pray and read with seven or eight of the brethren, as often as he had any spare time from the labour and ministry of the word. When he had most gloriously governed the church in that province two years and a half, the Divine Providence so ordaining, there came round a season like that of which Ecclesiastes says, "That there is a time to cast stones, and a time to gather them;" for there happened a mortality sent from heaven, which, by means of the death of the flesh, translated the stones of the church from their earthly places to the heavenly building. And when, after many of the church of that most reverend prelate had been taken out of the flesh, his hour also drew near wherein he was to pass out of this world to our Lord, it happened one day that he was in the aforesaid dwelling with only one brother, called Owini, his other companion being upon some reasonable occasion returned to the church. Now Owini was a monk of great merit, having forsaken the world with the pure intention of obtaining the heavenly reward; worthy in all respects to have the secrets of our Lord revealed to him, and worthy to have credit given by his hearers to what he said, for he came with Queen Etheldrid from the province of the East Angles, and was her prime minister, and governor of her family. As the fervour of his faith increased, resolving to renounce the world, he did not go about it slothfully, but so fully forsook the things of this world, that, quitting all he had, clad in a plain garment, and carrying an axe and hatchet in his hand, he came to the monastery of that most reverend prelate, called Lestingau; denoting, that he did not go to the monastery to live idle, as some do, but to labour, which he also confirmed by practice; for as he was less capable of meditating on the Holy Scriptures, he the more earnestly applied himself to the labour of his hands. In short, he was received by the bishop into the house aforesaid, and there entertained with the brethren, and whilst they were engaged within in reading, he was without, doing such things as were necessary.

Bede. One day when he was thus employed abroad, and his companions were gone to the church, as I began to state, the bishop was alone reading or praying in the oratory of that place, when on a sudden, as he afterwards said, he heard the voice of persons singing most sweetly and rejoicing, and appearing to descend from heaven. Which voice he said he first heard coming from the south-east, and that afterwards it drew near him, till it came to the roof of the oratory where the bishop was, and entering therein, filled the same and all about it. He listened attentively to what he heard, and after about half an hour, perceived the same song of joy to ascend from the roof of the said oratory, and to return to heaven the same way it came, with inexpressible sweetness. When he had stood some time astonished, and seriously revolving in his mind what it might be, the bishop opened the window of the oratory, and making a noise with his hand, as he was often wont to do, ordered him to come in to him. He accordingly went hastily in, and the bishop said to him, "Make haste to the church, and cause the seven brothers to come hither, and do you come with them." When they were come, he first admonished them to preserve the virtue of peace among themselves, and towards all others; and indefatigably to practise the rules of regular discipline, which they had either been taught by him, or seen him observe, or had noticed in the words or actions of the former fathers. Then he added, that the day of his death was at hand; for, said he, "that amiable guest, who was wont to visit our brethren, has vouchsafed also to come to me this day, and to call me out of this world. Return, therefore, to the church, and speak to the brethren, that they in their prayers recommend my passage to our Lord, and that they be careful to provide for their own, the hour whereof is uncertain, by watching, prayer, and good works."

Evelyn's Diary. 17 Aug 1654. But most remarkable and worth seeing is St. Peter's Cathedral [Map], which of all the great churches in England had been best preserved from the fury of the sacrilegious, by composition with the Rebels when they took the city, during the many incursions of Scotch and others. It is a most entire magnificent piece of Gothic architecture. The screen before the choir is of stone carved with flowers, running work and statues of the old kings. Many of the Monuments are very ancient. Here, as a great rarity in these days and at this time, they showed me a Bible and Common Prayer Book covered with crimson velvet, and richly embossed with silver gilt; also a service for the altar of gilt wrought plate, flagons, basin, ewer, plates, chalices, patins, etc., with a gorgeous covering for the altar and pulpit, carefully preserved in the vestry, in the hollow wall whereof rises a plentiful spring of excellent water. I got up to the tower, whence we had a prospect toward Durham [Map], and could see Ripon [Map], part of Lancashire, the famous and fatal Marston Moor, the Spas of Knaresborough [Map], and all the environs of that admirable country. Sir -- Ingoldsby has here a large house, gardens, and tennis court; also the King's (age 24) house and church near the castle, which was modernly fortified with a palisade and bastions. The streets are narrow and ill-paved, the shops like London.

Bede. In the fourth year of the reign of Osred (age 12), Coenred, who had for some time nobly governed the kingdom of the Mercians, much more nobly quitted the sceptre of his kingdom. For he went to Rome, Italy [Map], and there receiving the tonsure and becoming a monk, when Constantine (age 45) was pope, he continued to his last hour in prayer and fasting and alms-deeds at the threshold of the Apostles. He was succeeded in the throne by Ceolred, the son of Ethelred, who had governed the kingdom before Coenred. With him went the son of Sighere, the king of the East Saxons whom we mentioned before, by name Offa, a youth of a most pleasing age and comeliness, and greatly desired by all his nation to have and to hold the sceptre of the kingdom. He, with like devotion, quitted wife, and lands, and kindred and country, for Christ and for the Gospel, that he might "receive an hundred-fold in this life, and in the world to come life everlasting." He also, when they came to the holy places at Rome, received the tonsure, and ending his life in the monastic habit, attained to the vision of the blessed Apostles in Heaven, as he had long desired.

The same year that they departed from Britain, the great bishop, Wilfrid, ended his days in the province called Inundalum [Map], after he had been bishop forty-five years. His body, being laid in a coffin, was carried to his monastery, which is called Inhrypum, and buried in the church of the blessed Apostle Peter, with the honour due to so great a prelate. Concerning whose manner of life, let us now turn back, and briefly make mention of the things which were done. Being a boy of a good disposition, and virtuous beyond his years, he conducted himself so modestly and discreetly in all points, that he was deservedly beloved, respected, and cherished by his elders as one of themselves. At fourteen years of age he chose rather the monastic than the secular life; which, when he had signified to his father, for his mother was dead, he readily consented to his godly wishes and desires, and advised him to persist in that wholesome purpose. Wherefore he came to the isle of Lindisfarne [Map], and there giving himself to the service of the monks, he strove diligently to learn and to practise those things which belong to monastic purity and piety; and being of a ready wit, he speedily learned the psalms and some other books, having not yet received the tonsure, but being in no small measure marked by those virtues of humility and obedience which are more important than the tonsure; for which reason he was justly loved by his elders and his equals. Having served God some years in that monastery, and being a youth of a good understanding, he perceived that the way of virtue delivered by the Scots was in no wise perfect, and he resolved to go to Rome, to see what ecclesiastical or monastic rites were in use at the Apostolic see. When he told the brethren, they commended his design, and advised him to carry out that which he purposed. He forthwith went to Queen Eanfled, for he was known to her, and it was by her counsel and support that he had been admitted into the aforesaid monastery, and he told her of his desire to visit the threshold of the blessed Apostles. She, being pleased with the youth's good purpose, sent him into Kent, to King Earconbert,8 who was her uncle's son, requesting that he would send him to Rome, Italy [Map] in an honourable manner. At that time, Honorius, one of the disciples of the blessed Pope Gregory (age 40), a man very highly instructed in ecclesiastical learning, was archbishop there. When he had tarried there for a space, and, being a youth of an active spirit, was diligently applying himself to learn those things which came under his notice, another youth, called Biscop, surnamed Benedict, of the English nobility, arrived there, being likewise desirous to go to Rome, of whom we have before made mention.

Bede. How Ethelwald successor to Cuthbert leading a hermit's life calmed a tempest by his prayers when the brethren were in danger at sea. [687 699 a.d.]

The venerable Ethelwald succeeded the man of God, Cuthbert, in the exercise of a solitary life, which he spent in the isle of Farne [Map] before he became a bishop. After he had received the priesthood, he consecrated his office by deeds worthy of that degree for many years in the monastery which is called Inhrypum. To the end that his merit and manner of life may be the more certainly made known, I will relate one miracle of his, which was told me by one of the brothers for and on whom the same was wrought; to wit, Guthfrid, the venerable servant and priest of Christ, who also, afterwards, as abbot, presided over the brethren of the same church of Lindisfarne [Map], in which he was educated.

"I came," says he, "to the island of Farne [Map], with two others of the brethren, desiring to speak with the most reverend father, Ethelwald. Having been refreshed with his discourse, and asked for his blessing, as we were returning home, behold on a sudden, when we were in the midst of the sea, the fair weather in which we were sailing, was broken, and there arose so great and terrible a tempest, that neither sails nor oars were of any use to us, nor had we anything to expect but death. After long struggling with the wind and waves to no effect, at last we looked back to see whether it was possible by any means at least to return to the island whence we came, but we found that we were on all sides alike cut off by the storm, and that there was no hope of escape by our own efforts. But looking further, we perceived, on the island of Farne, our father Ethelwald, beloved of God, come out of his retreat to watch our course; for, hearing the noise of the tempest and raging sea, he had come forth to see what would become of us. When he beheld us in distress and despair, he bowed his knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, in prayer for our life and safety; and as he finished his prayer, he calmed the swelling water, in such sort that the fierceness of the storm ceased on all sides, and fair winds attended us over a smooth sea to the very shore. When we had landed, and had pulled up our small vessel from the waves, the storm, which had ceased a short time for our sake, presently returned, and raged furiously during the whole day; so that it plainly appeared that the brief interval of calm had been granted by Heaven in answer to the prayers of the man of God, to the end that we might escape.".

The man of God remained in the isle of Farne [Map] twelve years, and died there; but was buried in the church of the blessed Apostle Peter [Map], in the isle of Lindisfarne, beside the bodies of the aforesaid bishops. These things happened in the days of King Aldfrid, who, after his brother Egfrid, ruled the nation of the Northumbrians for nineteen years.

The Beauties of England and Wales: Wiltshire and Westmoreland. Entellus threw his huge gauntlets in medium; and, after stripping, off his garments "media constitit arena1." The same custom is observable. in the common cock-fights and boxing-matches of this day. The games of the South-Sea islanders were performed in circles. Saxo Grammaticus tells us that the duels of the northern nations were fought in rings; and when the occasion was particular, as in the contentions of princes or noblemen, the circus was formed with wooden pales, or with turf or stones, The spectators stood upon the terrace; and, at the signal of the heralds, the combatants rushed upon the area from the opposite entrances. We copy Saxo’s account of the duel between Ubbo and Slavus:—"Nec mora: circulatur campus, milite circus stipatur, concurrunt pugiles, fit frangor, fremit spectatrix tarba votorum discors. Excandescunt igitur athlete animis, et mutuis in vulueribus ruentes, eandem lucis; ac pugne exitium sortiuntur", The conquered were allowed the privilege of funeral rites when the contention had originated in a point of honour; if not, their "flesh was given to the fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the field." The tumuli, near the tilting-grounds on Thornborough Common, strengthen the conjecture that places of this kind were used in contests of honour.

Note 1. "he stood in the middle of the sand".

Note 2. "No delay: the field is encircled, the arena is crowded with soldiers, the fighters rush in, there is a clash, the crowd of spectators roars with discordant shouts. Therefore, the athletes grow fierce in spirit, and rushing into mutual wounds, they share the same fate of light; and death in battle".
