Early Plate Bascinet Period. Remarkable helm on which the Baron's head rests with a Bearded Man crest. Excellent orle around the Baron's bascinet.

On 12 Mar 1487 William Gascoigne (age 35) died at Gawthorpe Hall [Map]. All Saints Church Harewood [Map]. Monument to William Gascoigne (age 35) and Margaret Percy (age 40). Fluted Period. Alabaster chest tomb with a fine array of weepers, possibly their children although too many, women one side, nine men the other, one of which appears with angels wings, possible children and spouses. He wearing a Lancastrian Esses Collar with unusual O links. Clean shaved, no bascinet, his head resting on a helm with bulls head crest. His armour plate over which there appears to be, unusually for the period, a tabard. The left hand side of his face appears disfigured. Possibly a war wound. She wearing the widow's barbe. Note. Gardner describes this monument as being to Sir John Nevill of Womersley, died 1482. Chest with Weepers. Chest with Angels with Rounded Wings holding Shields. Angels Supporting Pillow.

On 23 Apr 1394 Hugh Calverley (age 70) died. He was probably buried in St Boniface's Church, Bunbury [Map]. Monument Early Plate Bascinet Period. Finely carved Calf's Head on the breastplate representing Hugh Calveley's canting arms. Calf's Head Crest. Hip Belt. Basinet with unusual decorated Orle.
Hugh Calverley: Around 1324 he was born to David Calverly of Lea. On 26 Mar 1351 thirty English and thirty French knights fought in an arranged battle at Guillac known as Battle of the Thirty. Hugh Calverley (age 27) fought, was captured and ransomed. On 29 Sep 1364 Battle of Auray decided the Breton Succession in favour of John Montfort V Duke Brittany (age 25). The Breton and English army was commanded by John Chandos (age 44) and included William Latimer 4th Baron Latimer of Corby (age 34), Miles Stapleton (age 44) and Hugh Calverley (age 40). Charles "Saint" Chatillon Duke Brittany (age 45) was killed. Bertrand Geusclin (age 44) surrendered. Effigy of Sir Hugh Calveley. SIR HUGH CALVELEY, or Calverley, of Lea, in Cheshire, was a most eminent soldier in the reign of Edward the Third, and his successor Richard the Second. In 1350 we find him one of the combatants in the celebrated pitched trial of arms, or combât-à-l'outrance fought between thirty men-at-arms on the English side, and thirty on that of the Bretons, called, in allusion to the number of the champions on either party, the Battle of Trente. Sir Richard Brembre commanded the English hand, and Marshal Beaumanoir the French. Among the companions of the valiant Calveley (twenty of whom were English, the rest foreigners) were, Sir Robert Knolles, also a most distinguished knight, Croquart the Freebooter, the gigantic Hulbitee, and Thomelin de Billefort, so called from his wielding an enormous weapon of the axe kind. Sir Richard Brembre was slain fighting hand-in-hand with the famous Bertram du Guesclin; Calveley, Knolles, and Croquart, the poor remains of the English party, were taken prisoners to the Castle of Josselina.

After 1423. St Peter's Church Elford [Map]. Monument to John Stanley. Early Plate Bascinet Period. Maiden's Face Buckle. Eagle and Baby Crest; the legend associated with Sir John's descent from his ancestor, Sir Thomas Latham, whose wanted his barren wife to adopt his illegitimate son so he placed the baby in a nearby eagle's nest. His wife was delighted with this 'miracle' and took the child as her own.
Historic England states ... "Knight of circa 1370, alabaster, with bogus Gothic inscription by Richardson to Sir John Stanley, died 1474".
Mark Downing, President of the Church Monuments Society states on FB ... My research concludes c.1410. On a modern alabaster tomb-chest in the north-east corner of the south aisle. Stebbing Shaw quotes the inscription and expenses by Humphrey Stanley who probably acquired the effigy from a dissolved monastic house, with the inscription added c.1540 by possibly a Burton-on-Trent workshop. Restored and re-cut by Richardson in 1848/49. He states that he renewed the eagle crest, parts of the basinet, aventail, left arm, gauntlets, grip of the dagger, rowel spurs, spur straps, first part of the inscription and tomb-chest. Inscription on the right side of the slab: Orate pro aia d'ni Joh'is Stanley milit quondam d'ni de pype clyfton caumpuyle elforde et stotfolde et hui' Cantarie et capelle fundator' Anno d'ni Mil'simo CCCCMO Septuagesimo quarto. It is worth commenting that the rapier sword was not introduced until the sixteenth century and that this sword was cut into the slab when the inscription was added.

On 19 Mar 1505 Humphrey Stanley (age 55) died.

On 07 May 1592 Christopher Wray Chief Justice (age 68) died. He was was buried in St Michael's Church, Glentworth [Map]. Monument to Sir Chistopher and his wife Anne Girlington. Elizabethan Period. Elephant and Castle Crest. Pink, white and blue-grey marble. Two recumbent effigies, Sir Christopher above and a little behind his wife, he in red robes, black cap and thick ruff; she in black robes, large ruff and hood. Four kneeling white marble daughters below. Ornate tomb recess above with flanking pink marble columns with white and gold Corinthian Capitals. Undersurface of Recess decorated with white and gold bay leaves. Plaque inscribed above with raised plaque above with Sir Christopher's son at prayer flanked by coats of arms and obelisks.
Anne Girlington: She was born to Nicholas Girlington. Christopher Wray Chief Justice and she were married. After 07 May 1592 Anne Girlington was buried at St Michael's Church, Glentworth. Before 18 Oct 1602 John Darcy 2nd Baron Darcy Aston (age 62) and Anne Babington (age 64) were married. She by marriage Baroness Darcy of Aston.

Around 1465. All Saints Church Harewood [Map]. Monument to William Gascoigne XII (age 56) and Margaret Clarell Lady of the Garter. Fluted Period. Suns and Roses Collar. His bare head, with finely detailed hair, no facial hair, rests on an unusual helm which appears to be a Maiden's Face, with an orle. Below the waist faulds and tassets under which mail may be seen. Both rest on a chest tomb with finely detailed weepers on each side. She, on his right, with a Widow's Barbe drawn up to her chin at the finely carved end of her dress two dogs, one pulling at the folds. Dogs chewing at her dress with Studded Collar. William Gascoigne XII: Around 1409 he was born to William Gascoigne (age 43) at Gawthorpe Hall. On 07 Feb 1426 William Gascoigne XII (age 17) and Margaret Clarell Lady of the Garter (age 29) were married. Around 1465 William Gascoigne XII (age 56) died at Gawthorpe Hall. All Saints Church Harewood.
Margaret Clarell Lady of the Garter: Around 1397 she was born to Thomas Clarell of Aldwarke. In or before 1422 Robert Waterton Constable (age 62) and Margaret Clarell Lady of the Garter (age 24) were married. The difference in their ages was 37 years. Edith Latimer: Before 1479 John Greene and she were married. Around 1450 she was born to Nicholas Latimer (age 18) and Joan Hody at Duntish. Before 1475 John Mordaunt (age 19) and Edith Latimer (age 24) were married. The date somewhat unreliable. Her first husband John Greene (age 29) is supposed to have died in 1483 which makes the date of her marriage to John Mordaunt (age 19) and the birth of her sons by him unreliable? On 01 Sep 1504 Edith Latimer (age 54) died at Turvey. She was buried at All Saints Church, Turvey.

In 1528 Henry Willoughby (age 77) was buried at St Leonard's Church Wollaton, Nottinghamshire [Map]. A fine chest tomb monument in sandstone (rather than alabaster), somewhat damaged, with his four wives, two each side.Lancastrian Esses Collar somehwat unusual given the 1528 date of his death. Sphinx Crest. Cadaver Underneath. Henry Willoughby's Arms including Willoughby top left hand corner (Water Bougets from Willoughy family original name Bugge). Lancastrian Esses and Inter-twined Knots Collar.

After 1446. St Bartholemew's Church Tong [Map]. Monument to Fulk de Pembridge of Tong Castle and Isabel de Lingen (age 76). She the foundress of the church. Camail and Jupon Period. His head rests on a Great Helm with his crest of a Turkish Woman with plaited hair. At his feet a lion, at her feet a fawn albeit no longer with its head. She in widow's clothes with a barbe. Note the curious chain attached to the bottom of her dress.
