Richard Caton 1763-1845

In 1763 Richard Caton was born in Lancashire.

On 25th November 1787 Richard Caton [aged 24] and Mary "Polly" Carroll [aged 17] were married at Annapolis, Maryland.

In 1788 [his daughter] Marianne Caton Marchioness Wellesley was born to Richard Caton [aged 25] and [his wife] Mary "Polly" Carroll [aged 18]. She married 29th October 1825 Richard Wellesley 1st Marquess Wellesley, son of Garrett Wellesley 1st Earl Mornington and Anne Hill Countess Mornington.

In 1790 [his daughter] Elizabeth Caton Baroness Stafford was born to Richard Caton [aged 27] and [his wife] Mary "Polly" Carroll [aged 20]. She married 26th May 1836 George William Stafford-Jerningham 8th Baron Stafford, son of William Jerningham of Cossey Park 6th Baronet and Frances Dillon.

In 1793 [his daughter] Louisa Catharine Caton Duchess Leeds was born to Richard Caton [aged 30] and [his wife] Mary "Polly" Carroll [aged 23]. She married (1) 24th April 1817 Felton Elwell Hervey-Bathurst 1st Baronet (2) 24th April 1828 Francis Godolphin Osborne 7th Duke Leeds, son of George William Frederick Osborne 6th Duke Leeds and Charlotte Townshend Duchess Leeds.

In 1795 [his daughter] Emily Caton was born to Richard Caton [aged 32] and [his wife] Mary "Polly" Carroll [aged 25]. She married 15th August 1815 Consul John MacTavish and had issue.

On 15th August 1815 [his son-in-law] Consul John MacTavish [aged 28] and Emily Caton [aged 20] were married.

She one of the four Caton sisters, daughters of Richard Caton [aged 52], a merchant from Baltimore, the three eldest, known as the "The Three American Graces", married European husbands. Only the fourth daughter Emily Caton had children.

Marianne Caton Marchioness Wellesley [aged 27] married Richard Wellesley 1st Marquess Wellesley [aged 55],

Elizabeth Caton Baroness Stafford [aged 25] married George William Stafford-Jerningham 8th Baron Stafford [aged 44],

Louisa Catharine Caton Duchess Leeds [aged 22] married firstly Felton Elwell Hervey-Bathurst 1st Baronet [aged 33] and secondly Francis Godolphin Osborne 7th Duke Leeds [aged 17].

Emily Caton married Consul John MacTavish.

On 24th April 1817 [his son-in-law] Felton Elwell Hervey-Bathurst 1st Baronet [aged 35] and Louisa Catharine Caton Duchess Leeds [aged 24] were married.

Louisa Catharine Caton Duchess Leeds married firstly Felton Elwell Hervey-Bathurst 1st Baronet and secondly Francis Godolphin Osborne 7th Duke Leeds [aged 18].

Emily Caton married Consul John MacTavish [aged 30].

On 29th October 1825 [his son-in-law] Richard Wellesley 1st Marquess Wellesley [aged 65] and Marianne Caton Marchioness Wellesley [aged 37] were married. She by marriage Marchioness Wellesley. The difference in their ages was 27 years. He the son of Garrett Wellesley 1st Earl Mornington and Anne Hill Countess Mornington [aged 83].

William of Worcester's Chronicle of England

William of Worcester, born around 1415, and died around 1482 was secretary to John Fastolf, the renowned soldier of the Hundred Years War, during which time he collected documents, letters, and wrote a record of events. Following their return to England in 1440 William was witness to major events. Twice in his chronicle he uses the first person: 1. when writing about the murder of Thomas, 7th Baron Scales, in 1460, he writes '… and I saw him lying naked in the cemetery near the porch of the church of St. Mary Overie in Southwark …' and 2. describing King Edward IV's entry into London in 1461 he writes '… proclaimed that all the people themselves were to recognize and acknowledge Edward as king. I was present and heard this, and immediately went down with them into the city'. William’s Chronicle is rich in detail. It is the source of much information about the Wars of the Roses, including the term 'Diabolical Marriage' to describe the marriage of Queen Elizabeth Woodville’s brother John’s marriage to Katherine, Dowager Duchess of Norfolk, he aged twenty, she sixty-five or more, and the story about a paper crown being placed in mockery on the severed head of Richard, 3rd Duke of York.

On 26th May 1836 [his son-in-law] George William Stafford-Jerningham 8th Baron Stafford [aged 65] and Elizabeth Caton Baroness Stafford [aged 46] were married. She by marriage Baroness Stafford.
