In 1687 James Fitzjames 1st Duke Berwick [aged 16] was created 1st Duke Berwick by King James II of England Scotland and Ireland [aged 53].

On 26th March 1695 James Fitzjames 1st Duke Berwick [aged 24] and Honora Burke Duchess Berwick [aged 21] were married at Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Yvelines. She by marriage Duchess Berwick. She the daughter of William Burke 7th Earl Clanricarde and Helen MacCarty Countess Clanricarde [aged 63]. He the illegitmate son of King James II of England Scotland and Ireland [aged 61] and Arabella Churchill [aged 46].

In 1698 James Fitzjames 1st Duke Berwick [aged 27] and Anne Bulkeley Duchess Berwick were married. She by marriage Duchess Berwick. He the illegitmate son of King James II of England Scotland and Ireland [aged 64] and Arabella Churchill [aged 48].

On 12th June 1734 James Fitzjames 1st Duke Berwick [aged 63] died. His son James [aged 37] succeeded 2nd Duke Berwick. Catalina Ventura Colón Duchess Berwick 9th Duchess Veragua [aged 43] by marriage Duchess Berwick.

On 2nd June 1738 James Fitz James 2nd Duke Berwick [aged 41] died at Naples [Map]. His son James [aged 19] succeeded 3rd Duke Berwick.

On 26th July 1738 James Fitz James 3rd Duke Berwick 10th Duke Veragua [aged 19] and Maria Teresa Silva Duchess Berwick and Veragua [aged 22] were married. She by marriage Duchess Berwick. He the son of James Fitz James 2nd Duke Berwick and Catalina Ventura Colón Duchess Berwick 9th Duchess Veragua [aged 48].

On 9th October 1771 Carlos Fitz James Stuart 10th Duke Veragua 4th Duke Berwick [aged 19] and Caroline Stolberg Gedern Duchess Veragua Duchess Berwick [aged 16] were married. She by marriage Duchess Veragua, Duchess of Liria, Duchess of Jérica, Duchess Berwick. He the son of James Fitz James 3rd Duke Berwick 10th Duke Veragua [aged 52] and Maria Teresa Silva Duchess Berwick and Veragua [aged 55].

On 30th September 1785 James Fitz James 3rd Duke Berwick 10th Duke Veragua [aged 66] died at Valencia. His son Carlos [aged 33] succeeded 10th Duke Veragua, 4th Duke of Liria, 4th Duke of Jérica, 4th Duke Berwick. Caroline Stolberg Gedern Duchess Veragua Duchess Berwick [aged 30].

Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke

Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson.

On 3rd April 1794 Jacobo Fitz James Stuart 10th Duke Veragua 5th Duke Berwick [aged 21] died at Madrid [Map]. His son Jacobo [aged 2] succeeded 11th Duke Veragua, 6th Duke of Jérica, 6th Duke of Liria, 6th Duke Berwick.

On 5th January 1795 Jacobo Fitz James Stuart 11th Duke Veragua 6th Duke Berwick [aged 3] died. His brother Carlos succeeded 12th Duke Veragua, 7th Duke of Jérica, 7th Duke of Liria, 7th Duke Berwick.

In 1819 Carlos Miguel Fitz James Stuart 12th Duke Veragua 7th Duke Berwick 14th Duke Alba [aged 24] and Rosalía Ventimiglia Duchess Veragua Duchess Berwick Duchess Alba [aged 21] were married. She by marriage Duchess Veragua, Duchess of Liria, Duchess of Jérica, Duchess Berwick, Duchess Alba. He the son of Jacobo Fitz James Stuart 10th Duke Veragua 5th Duke Berwick and María Teresa Fernández Silva Duchess Veragua Duchess Berwick.

On 7th October 1835 Carlos Miguel Fitz James Stuart 12th Duke Veragua 7th Duke Berwick 14th Duke Alba [aged 41] died. His son Jacopo [aged 14] succeeded 15th Duke Alba, 13th Duke Veragua, 8th Duke of Jérica, 8th Duke of Liria, 8th Duke Berwick.

On 14th February 1838 Jacopo Fitz James Stuart 15th Duke Alba 13th Duke Veragua 8th Duke Berwick [aged 16] and María Francisca "Paca" Palafox Duchess of Veragua, Berwick and Alba [aged 13] were married at Madrid [Map]. She by marriage Duchess Veragua, Duchess of Liria, Duchess of Jérica, Duchess Berwick, Duchess Alba. He the son of Carlos Miguel Fitz James Stuart 12th Duke Veragua 7th Duke Berwick 14th Duke Alba and Rosalía Ventimiglia Duchess Veragua Duchess Berwick Duchess Alba [aged 40].

On 10th July 1881 Jacopo Fitz James Stuart 15th Duke Alba 13th Duke Veragua 8th Duke Berwick [aged 60] died. His son Carlos [aged 31] succeeded 16th Duke Alba, 14th Duke Veragua, 9th Duke of Jérica, 9th Duke of Liria, 9th Duke Berwick.

On 15th October 1901 Carlos María Fitz James Stuart 16th Duke Alba 14th Duke Veragua 9th Duke Berwick [aged 51] died. His son Jacobo [aged 22] succeeded 17th Duke Alba, 15th Duke Veragua, 10th Duke of Jérica, 10th Duke of Liria, 10th Duke Berwick.

On 24th September 1953 Jacobo Fitz-James Stuart 17th Duke of Alba 10th Duke of Berwick [aged 74] died. His daughter María [aged 27] succeeded 18th Duchess Alba, 16th Duchess Veragua, 11th Duchess of Jérica, 11th Duchess of Liria, 11th Duchess Berwick.

The History of William Marshal, Earl of Chepstow and Pembroke, Regent of England. Book 1 of 2, Lines 1-10152.

The History of William Marshal was commissioned by his son shortly after William’s death in 1219 to celebrate the Marshal’s remarkable life; it is an authentic, contemporary voice. The manuscript was discovered in 1861 by French historian Paul Meyer. Meyer published the manuscript in its original Anglo-French in 1891 in two books. This book is a line by line translation of the first of Meyer’s books; lines 1-10152. Book 1 of the History begins in 1139 and ends in 1194. It describes the events of the Anarchy, the role of William’s father John, John’s marriages, William’s childhood, his role as a hostage at the siege of Newbury, his injury and imprisonment in Poitou where he met Eleanor of Aquitaine and his life as a knight errant. It continues with the accusation against him of an improper relationship with Margaret, wife of Henry the Young King, his exile, and return, the death of Henry the Young King, the rebellion of Richard, the future King Richard I, war with France, the death of King Henry II, and the capture of King Richard, and the rebellion of John, the future King John. It ends with the release of King Richard and the death of John Marshal.
