Around Sep 1543 [his father] James Hamilton 2nd Earl Arran (age 27) was created 1st Duke Châtellerault. [his mother] Margaret Douglas Duchess Châtellerault by marriage Duchess Châtellerault. He was awrded the Duchy for having arranged the marriage of Mary Queen of Scots and the Dauphin.

On 13 May 1568 the army of Mary Queen of Scots (age 25) commanded by Archibald Campbell 5th Earl Argyll (age 34) was defeated by the army of the Regent her illegitimate half-brother James Stewart 1st Earl Moray Regent (age 37).
