Pointed back panel of black marble before which is a carving of the deceased seated in ducal robes, holding a cameo of the Duchess, beside him stands the fourth Duke in Roman dress. The figures are flanked by urns. The base is carved with flutes and Paterae and to the centre are bronze plates bearing the memorial inscription.

The news of the death of the Marquess of Londonderry, which occurred at Wynyard, Stockton-on-Tees, yesterday morning, will be received with profound regret far beyond the circle of his personal friends or of the members of the Unionist Party. Lord Londonderry had not been entirely well for some little time past. For a fortnight, it seems, he had been suffering from sciatica. Last week he caught a chill, from which pneumonia developed. On Sunday his condition was seen to be critical. During the night he collapsed, and the end came at 9.30 yesterday morning. Lady Londonderry, who had been in constant attendance on him during his illness, was present at the last, as also were Lady Ilchester and Lord Herbert Vane-Tempest (52).

Marquess Montagu

Earldom of Northumberland returned to the Percy Family

On 27 Mar 1470 John Neville 1st Marquess Montagu 1431-1471 (39) revoked the Earl of Northumberland (3C 1464) so that the Earldom could be given to Henry Percy 4th Earl of Northumberland 1449-1489 (21) of the Percy family who were traditional holders of the Earldom. A deeply unpopular move with the Neville family who had been longstanding enemies of the Percies in the North. He (39) was created 1st Marquess Montagu instead. Possibly a consequence of the defection of Warwick the Kingmaker (42) to the Lancastrian cause as evidenced by the Welles Rebellion earlier in the year.
