Battle of Towton

On 29 Mar 1461 the Battle of Towton was a decisive victory for King Edward IV of England (age 18) bringing to an end the first war of the Wars of the Roses. Said to be the bloodiest battle on English soil 28000 were killed mainly during the rout that followed the battle.

The Yorkist army was commanded by King Edward IV of England (age 18) with John Mowbray 3rd Duke of Norfolk (age 45), William Neville 1st Earl Kent (age 56), William Hastings 1st Baron Hastings (age 30) (knighted), Walter Blount 1st Baron Mountjoy (age 45), Henry Bourchier 2nd Count Eu 1st Earl Essex (age 57), John Scrope 5th Baron Scrope of Bolton (age 23) and John Wenlock 1st Baron Wenlock (age 61).

The Lancastrian army suffered significant casualties including Richard Percy (age 35), Ralph Bigod Lord Morley (age 50), John Bigod (age 28), Robert Cromwell (age 71), Ralph Eure (age 49), John Neville 1st Baron Neville of Raby (age 51), John Beaumont (age 33), Thomas Dethick (age 61), Everard Simon Digby, William Plumpton (age 25) and William Welles (age 51) who were killed.

Henry Percy 3rd Earl of Northumberland (age 39) was killed. His son Henry Percy 4th Earl of Northumberland (age 12) succeeded 4th Earl of Northumberland, 7th Baron Percy of Alnwick, 15th Baron Percy of Topcliffe. Maud Herbert Countess Northumberland (age 3) by marriage Countess of Northumberland.

Ralph Dacre 1st Baron Dacre Gilsland (age 49) was killed. He was buried at the nearby Saxton church where his chest tomb is extant. Baron Dacre Gilsland extinct.

Lionel Welles 6th Baron Welles (age 55) was killed. His son Richard Welles 7th Baron Welles, Baron Willoughby (age 33) succeeded 7th Baron Welles.

William Hastings 1st Baron Hastings (age 40) commanded.

Margaret of Anjou (age 41) was captured. Her son Edward of Westinster Prince of Wales (age 17) was killed. He was the last of the Lancastrian line excluding the illegitmate Charles Somerset 1st Earl of Worcester (age 11) whose line continues to the present.

John Courtenay 15th Earl Devon (age 36) was killed and attainted. Earl Devon, Baron Courtenay forfeit. Some sources refer to these titles as being abeyant?

John Wenlock 1st Baron Wenlock (age 71) was killed. Baron Wenlock extinct.

John Delves (age 49), Humphrey Tuchet (age 37), John Beaufort (age 30), William Vaux of Harrowden (age 35) and Robert Whittingham (age 42) were killed.

Henry Roos fought and escaped to Tewkesbury Abbey [Map] where he sought sanctuary. He was subsequently pardoned.

On 18 Mar 1496 Thomas Burgh 1st Baron Burgh (age 65) died. He was buried at Holy Trinity Church Gainsborough. His son Edward Burgh (age 33) was deemed insane so not summoned to Parliament; Baron Burgh extinct.

Trial and Execution of the Duke of Buckingham

On 17 May 1521 Edward Stafford 3rd Duke of Buckingham (age 43) was beheaded at Tower Hill [Map] for no specific reason other than his having a significant amount of Plantagenet blood and was, therefore, considered a threat by Henry VIII (age 29). He was posthumously attainted by Act of Parliament on 31 July 1523, disinheriting his children. He was buried at St Peter's Church, Britford [Map]. Duke of Buckingham, Earl Stafford and Baron Stafford extinct.

His father Henry Stafford 2nd Duke of Buckingham had been executed for his part in Buckingham's Rebellion, his great-grandfather Humphrey Stafford 1st Duke of Buckingham was killed at the 1460 Battle of Northampton, and his great-great grand-father was killed at the Battle of Shrewsbury, not forgetting his great-uncle Henry Stafford who was killed at the Battle of Barnet and his daughter Margaret Stafford (age 10) who was burned at the stake for her part in Bigod's Rebellion.

On 03 Jun 1665 at the Battle of Lowestoft an English fleet commanded by King James II of England Scotland and Ireland (age 31), Prince Rupert Palatinate Simmern 1st Duke Cumberland (age 45) and Edward Montagu 1st Earl Sandwich (age 39) defeated a Dutch Fleet.

Richard Boyle was killed.

Charles Maccarthy Viscount Muskerry was killed.

Charles Berkeley 1st Earl Falmouth (age 35) was killed by a cannonball aboard the Royal Charles. Earl Falmouth extinct, Baron Botetourt Langport in Somerset extinct. His father Charles Berkeley 2nd Viscount Fitzhardinge (age 65) succeeded 2nd Viscount Fitzhardinge of Berehaven in Kerry. Penelope Godolphin Viscountess Fitzhardinge by marriage Viscountess Fitzhardinge of Berehaven in Kerry. Possibly the only occasion when a father has succeeded his son.

Charles Weston 3rd Earl of Portland (age 26) was killed by a cannon shot. On 13 Jun 1665 His uncle Thomas Weston 4th Earl of Portland (age 55) succeeded 4th Earl of Portland.

Admiral Jeremy Smith commanded the Mary.

Siege of Tangier

On 31 Mar 1682 John Freschville 1st Baron Frescheville (age 74) died. Baron Frescheville of Staveley extinct. The last of the male line of Freschville. He was buried in St John the Baptist's Church, Staveley [Map] where his third wife Anna Charlotte De Vic commissioned a monument. Sarcophagus with seated putti.

Anna Charlotte De Vic: she was born to Henry de Vic. In Dec 1666 John Freschville 1st Baron Frescheville and she were married. On 12 Nov 1717 she died.

In 1683 Charles Kirkoven 1st Earl Bellomont (age 39) died. Earl Bellomont and Baron Wotton extinct. He was buried at Canterbury Cathedral [Map]. He willed Boughton aka Bocton Place, Kent [Map] to his nephew, Charles Stanhope aka Wooton (age 7), son of his half-brother Philip Stanhope 2nd Earl Chesterfield (age 49).

In 1691 Charles North 1st Baron Grey, 5th Baron North (age 55) died. His son William North 6th Baron North (age 12) succeeded 6th Baron North. Baron Grey of Rolleston extinct.

On 09 May 1703 John Jeffreys 2nd Baron Jeffreys (age 29) died. Baron Jeffreys extinct.

On 31 Jan 1705 Robert Lucas 3rd Baron Shenfield (age 55) died. Baron Lucas of Shenfield extinct.

In 1706 Ralph Grey 4th Baronet Grey of Werke (age 45) died. Baron Grey Werke in Northumberland extinct. His estates were inherited by his nephew Henry Neville aka Grey (age 22); the estates were charged with £40,000 owing to the 3rd Lord Grey's involvement in the Monmouth Rebellion. Henry Neville aka Grey (age 22) changed his surname from Neville to Grey in accordance with his uncle's will.

Hamilton-Mohun Duel

On 12 Nov 1712 Charles Mohun 4th Baron Mohun Okehampton (age 37) duelled with James Hamilton Duke Hamilton, 1st Duke Brandon (age 54) at Hyde Park [Map] over a legal dispute about the estate and inheritance of the late Earl Macclesfield.

Mohun had married Charlotte Orby Baroness Mohun Okehampton grand-daughter of Charles Gerard 1st Earl Macclesfield. James Hamilton Duke Hamilton, 1st Duke Brandon (age 54) had married Elizabeth Gerard Duchess Brandon (age 32).

On 15 Nov 1712 James Hamilton Duke Hamilton, 1st Duke Brandon (age 54) died from wounds received duelling. His son James Hamilton 5th Duke Hamilton 2nd Duke Brandon (age 9) succeeded 5th Duke Hamilton, 2nd Duke Brandon of Suffolk, 2nd Baron Dutton of Cheshire.

On 15 Nov 1712 Charles Mohun 4th Baron Mohun Okehampton (age 37) died from wounds received duelling; his father had died the same way. Baron Mohun Okehampton and Baronet Mohun of Boconnoc in Cornwall extinct.

On 27 May 1719 Thomas Newport 1st Baron Torrington (age 64) died without issue. Baron Torrington of Torrington in Devon extinct. He was buried at Wroxeter, Shropshire [Map].

On 14 Nov 1734 Louise Kéroualle 1st Duchess Portsmouth (age 85) died in Paris [Map]. Duke Portsmouth, Earl Fareham and Baron Petersfield extinct since the creations were for life only.

On 04 Aug 1735 George St George 1st Baron St George (age 77) died. Baron St George of Hatley St George in Roscommon and Leitrim and Baronet St George of Carrickdrumrusk in Leitrim extinct. His daughter Mary St George and her husband John Ussher (age 53) inherited his estates. Their son St George Ussher aka St George 1st Baron Saint George (age 20) subsequently adopted the surname St George meaning he was St George St George his christian name also being St George. Their son Arthur French Ussher aka St George also adopted the surname St George.

On 09 May 1737 John Savage 5th Earl Rivers (age 72) died unmarried since he was a Catholic priest. Earl Rivers, Viscount Colchester, Viscount Savage, Baron Darcy of Chiche and Baronet Savage of Rocksavage in Cheshire extinct.

On 19 Apr 1738 Henry Herbert 2nd Baron Chirbury committed suicide. He died without issue; Baron Herbert Chirbury extinct.

On 14 Sep 1749 Field Marshal Richard Temple 1st Viscount Cobham (age 73) died without surviving issue. His sister Hester Temple 1st Countess Temple (age 59) succeeded 2nd Viscountess Cobham by special remainder. Baron Cobham extinct. His second cousin once removed William Temple 5th Baronet (age 55) succeeded 5th Baronet Temple of Stowe.

On 01 Jan 1755 Henry Bromley 1st Baron Montfort (age 49) shot himself. He was buried at the Trinity Chapel, Conduit Street. Baron Montfort of Horseheath extinct. He left debts of £30,000 with an estate out of repair and in a very ruinous condition.

On 13 Apr 1755 Edward Stawell 4th Baron Stawell died. Baron Stawell of Somerton in Somerset extinct. His daughter Mary Stawell 1st Baroness Stawell (age 30) inherited his estates. She was created Baron Stawell of Somerton in Somerset in 1760.

On 20 Apr 1759 Thomas William Coke 1st Earl of Leicester (age 61) died. Earl of Leicester and Baron Lovel of Minster Lovell extinct. Wenman Roberts aka Coke (age 42) inherited his estates.

On 31 Aug 1753 Edward Coke (age 34) died.

Monument in Church of St Mary the Virgin, Tittleshall [Map] commissioned by wife and mother Margaret Tufton Countess Leicester (age 58). Erected in 1760. Sculpted by Charles Atkinson. Gadrooned sarcophagus on pedestal with a carved and painted achievement above surrounded by extravagant mantling. Flanked by pair of composite columns supporting a dentilated pediment. Carved bust figures to the sides of the Earl and Countess by Louis Francois Roubiliac (age 56).

Edward Coke: On 02 Feb 1719 he was born to Thomas William Coke 1st Earl of Leicester and Margaret Tufton Countess Leicester. On 01 Apr 1747 Edward Coke and Mary Campbell were married. She the daughter of John Campbell 2nd Duke Argyll. He the son of Thomas William Coke 1st Earl of Leicester and Margaret Tufton Countess Leicester.

On 07 Sep 1759 Edward Richard 8th Earl Warwick 5th Earl Holland (age 64) died without male issue. He was buried at St Mary Abbots Church, Kensington. Earl Warwick, Earl Holland, and Baron Rich of Leez extinct.

On 14 Feb 1761 Richard Annesley 6th Earl Anglesey (age 68) died. Earl Anglesey and Baron Annesley Newport Pagnell Buckinghamshire extinct. His son Arthur Annesley 1st Earl Mountnorris (age 16) succeeded 8th Viscount Valentia, 6th Baron Altham.

Arthur Annesley 1st Earl Mountnorris (age 16) didn't succeed as 7th Earl Anglesey since his parent's secret marriage in September 1741 was not supported by sufficient evidence for the English House of Lords to accept his legitimacy. He was subsequently created Earl Mountnorris of Mountnorris Castle in Armagh more or less in compensation.

He succeeded to the Irish titles Viscount Valentia and Baron Altham since the Irish House of Lords did believe his legitimacy.

On 06 Jun 1762 George Anson 1st Baron Anson (age 65) died without issue at Moor Park, Hertfordshire. He was buried at St Michael and All Angels Church, Colwich [Map]. Baron Anson of Soberton in Southampton extinct. His brother Thomas Anson (age 67) inherited his estates.
