Biography of James Agar 1713-1769

Before 1707 [his father] James Agar (age 35) and [his mother] Mary Wemyss (age 41) were married.

On 07 Sep 1713 James Agar was born to James Agar (age 41) and Mary Wemyss (age 48).

On 30 Nov 1733 [his father] James Agar (age 61) died.

On 06 Jul 1740 James Agar (age 26) and Rebecca Flower (age 18) were married.

In 1747 James Agar (age 33) was elected MP Gowran which seat he held until 1760. His father and brother had held the seat previously.

On 30 Sep 1751 [his brother-in-law] Henry Flower 1st Viscount Ashbrook (age 31) was created 1st Viscount Ashbrook by letters patent.

On 27 Jun 1752 [his brother-in-law] Henry Flower 1st Viscount Ashbrook (age 32) died. His son William Flower 2nd Viscount Ashbrook (age 8) succeeded 2nd Viscount Ashbrook.

In 1761 James Agar (age 47) was elected MP Callan.

In 1761 James Agar (age 47) was elected MP Tulsk.

On 03 Aug 1769 or 25 Aug 1769 James Agar (age 55) was killed in a duel with Henry Flood (age 37) his political rival. James, who missed with his first shot, reputedly shouted "Fire, you scoundrel!": Flood duly fired. Flood was prosecuted for murder, but was found guilty of manslaughter, and spared a prison sentence, as according to the code of the time he had acted honourably. The case, which aroused huge public interest.

On 03 Mar 1789 [his former wife] Rebecca Flower (age 67) died. Her brother [his former brother-in-law] Henry Flower 1st Viscount Ashbrook succeeded 2nd Baron Castle Durrow of Castle Durrow in County Kilkenny.
