Biography of John Cheyne of Drayton Beauchamp 1390-1468

Paternal Family Tree: Cheney

Around 1390 John Cheyne of Drayton Beauchamp was born to Roger Cheney (age 27) at Drayton Beauchamp, Buckinghamshire.

On 18 Jan 1414 John Cheyne of Drayton Beauchamp (age 24) and his father [his father] Roger Cheney (age 51) were sent to the Tower of London [Map] for their part in the Lollard Uprising. His brother [his brother] Thomas Cheney of Chesham Blois (age 20) managed to stay at large and was specifically excluded from the amnesty offered to the lollards that March. Roger Cheney (age 51) died in prison two months later. John Cheyne of Drayton Beauchamp (age 24) remained in the Tower until 2 Nov., and only then did he receive a royal pardon for his 'treasons, felonies and insurrections'. Five days later, he was allowed to take possession of his paternal inheritance, which, for reasons unknown, had previously escaped the penalty of confiscation. His brother was admitted to pardon two months afterwards.

On 14 May 1414 [his father] Roger Cheney (age 51) died at Tower of London [Map].

In or before 1433 Thomas de Semarc (age 20) and [his future sister-in-law] Alice Laxham (age 19) were married.

After John Cheyne's death his son William confirmed the conveyance in 144530, but [his brother] Thomas Cheyne (age 51) apparently alienated Chenies to his brother Sir John Cheyne (age 55), lord of Drayton Beauchamp and Grove in Chesham (q.v.), to whom he was indebted for £40031, and William Cheyne acknowledged Sir John Cheyne's (age 55) right in 145132.

A History of the County of Buckingham: Volume 3: Parishes: Chenies. On Sir John Cheyne's (age 78) death without issue in 146833 his widow Agnes married Edmund Molyneux, who was sheriff of the county in 147534 and presented to the church in 147935. He died in 148436, and Agnes survived him ten years. By her will 20 November 1494 her first husband's great-great-nephew John Cheyne of Chesham Bois (q.v.) obtained Drayton Beauchamp, Grove and Cogenhoe Manors, but Chenies [Map] passed to Agnes Cheyne's niece Anne (age 35) wife of David Philip37. Anne (age 35) and David Philip, who was sheriff in 149838, had some difficulty in inducing the trustees to hand over the manor39, but were in possession in 1500, when Chenies was settled on Anne and her issue40. She died seised of it in 1510, when it passed to her granddaughter Anne wife of John Broughton and daughter and heir of Guy Sapcote (age 19), son of Anne Philip (age 35) by a former husband (age 39)41.
