On 11 Jan 1900 John Hubert Ward (age 29) was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Worcestershire Yeomanry (The Queen's Own Worcestershire Hussars). He served in the Boer War between 1900 and 1901 as an aide to Major General John Palmer Brabazon.

In 1901 John Hubert Ward (age 30) was the Assistant Private Secretary to the Financial Secretary to the War Office, Edward George Villiers Stanley 17th Earl of Derby (age 35).

In Apr 1908 the engagement between John Hubert Ward (age 38) and [his future wife] Jean Templeton Reid (age 23) was annouced. She the daughter of Whitelaw Reid, American ambassador to the United Kingdom.

In 1913 Rachel Anne Gurney Countess Dudley (age 45) commissioned a new reredos at Saint Michael and All Angels Church, Great Witley [Map] from Salviati of Venice. The three lamps hanging in the sanctuary were given by the Countess in thanks for her [his brother] husband (age 45) and his two brothers [John Hubert Ward (age 42) and [his brother] Robert Arthur Ward (age 41)] returning safely from the Boer War. The initials on the mosaics appear to be those of the three brothers.
