They were half third cousin once removed.
On 01 Dec 1646 John Hay 1st Earl Tweeddale (age 53) was created 1st Earl Tweeddale. [his former wife] Jean Seton Countess Tweeddale by marriage Countess Tweeddale.
On 25 May 1653 John Hay 1st Earl Tweeddale (age 60) died. His son [his son] John Hay 1st Marquess Teviotdale (age 27) succeeded 2nd Earl Tweeddale. [his daughter-in-law] Jean Scott Marchioness Teviotdale by marriage Countess Tweeddale.
