John Henry Manners 5th Duke Rutland 1778-1857

On 26th December 1775 Charles Manners 4th Duke Rutland [aged 21] and [his mother] Mary Isabella Somerset Duchess Rutland [aged 19] were married. She the daughter of [his grandfather] Charles Noel Somerset 4th Duke Beaufort and [his grandmother] Elizabeth Berkeley Duchess Beaufort [aged 62]. They were half fourth cousins.

In 1778 John Henry Manners 5th Duke Rutland was born to Charles Manners 4th Duke Rutland [aged 23] and Mary Isabella Somerset Duchess Rutland [aged 21].

Around 1778 Bishop Bowyer Sparke [aged 18] was tutor to John Henry Manners 5th Duke Rutland.

On 29th May 1779 John Manners 3rd Duke Rutland [aged 82] died. His grandson Charles [aged 25] succeeded 4th Duke Rutland, 4th Marquess Grandby, 12th Earl of Rutland, 4th Baron Manners of Haddon in Derbyshire. [his mother] Mary Isabella Somerset Duchess Rutland [aged 22] by marriage Duchess Rutland.

On 24th October 1787 Charles Manners 4th Duke Rutland [aged 33] died at Phoenix Park Lodge, Phoenix Park, Dublin. His son John [aged 9] succeeded 5th Duke Rutland, 5th Marquess Grandby, 13th Earl of Rutland, 5th Baron Manners of Haddon in Derbyshire.

In 1789 Bishop Bowyer Sparke [aged 29] was appointed Rector of Waltham on the Wolds, Leicestershire [Map] by John Henry Manners 5th Duke Rutland [aged 11], his former pupil.

On 22nd April 1799 John Henry Manners 5th Duke Rutland [aged 21] and Elizabeth Howard Duchess Rutland [aged 18] were married. She by marriage Duchess Rutland. She the daughter of Frederick Howard 5th Earl Carlisle [aged 50] and Margaret Caroline Leveson-Gower Countess Carlisle. He the son of Charles Manners 4th Duke Rutland and Mary Isabella Somerset Duchess Rutland [aged 42]. They were fourth cousins.

In 1800 Bishop Bowyer Sparke [aged 40] was appointed Rector of Redmile, Leicestershire by John Henry Manners 5th Duke Rutland [aged 22], his former pupil.

In 1800 [his brother-in-law] Cecil Weld-Forester 1st Baron Forester [aged 32] and [his sister] Katherine Mary Manners Baroness Forester were married. She the daughter of [his father] Charles Manners 4th Duke Rutland and [his mother] Mary Isabella Somerset Duchess Rutland [aged 43]. They were fourth cousin once removed.

On 25th May 1800 [his daughter] Caroline Isabella Manners was born to John Henry Manners 5th Duke Rutland [aged 22] and [his wife] Elizabeth Howard Duchess Rutland [aged 19]. She died aged four in 1804.

On 21st March 1801 [his brother-in-law] George Howard 6th Earl Carlisle [aged 27] and Georgiana Cavendish Countess Carlisle [aged 17] were married. She the daughter of William Cavendish 5th Duke Devonshire [aged 53] and Georgiana Spencer Duchess Devonshire [aged 43]. He the son of [his father-in-law] Frederick Howard 5th Earl Carlisle [aged 52] and [his mother-in-law] Margaret Caroline Leveson-Gower Countess Carlisle. They were fourth cousins.

On 10th December 1801 [his daughter] Elizabeth Frederica Manners was born to John Henry Manners 5th Duke Rutland [aged 23] and [his wife] Elizabeth Howard Duchess Rutland [aged 21]. She married 7th March 1821 Andrew Robert Drummond and had issue.

In December 1804 [his daughter] Caroline Isabella Manners [aged 4] died.

On 2nd May 1806 [his daughter] Emmeline Charlotte Elizabeth Manners was born to John Henry Manners 5th Duke Rutland [aged 28] and [his wife] Elizabeth Howard Duchess Rutland [aged 25]. She married 17th February 1831 her fourth cousin Charles James Stuart-Wortley-Mackenzie, son of James Archibald Stuart-Wortley-Mackenzie 1st Baron Wharncliffe and Elizabeth Caroline Mary Crichton Baroness Wharncliffe, and had issue.

On 26th June 1807 [his son] George John Henry Manners was born to John Henry Manners 5th Duke Rutland [aged 29] and [his wife] Elizabeth Howard Duchess Rutland [aged 26]. On 4th August 1807 George John Henry Manners died.

On 4th April 1809 [his daughter] Katherine Isabella Manners was born to John Henry Manners 5th Duke Rutland [aged 31] and [his wife] Elizabeth Howard Duchess Rutland [aged 28]. She married 1st December 1830 her sixth cousin Frederick Hervey 2nd Marquess of Bristol, son of Frederick William Hervey 1st Marquess of Bristol and Elizabeth Albana Upton, and had issue.

On 29th December 1810 [his daughter] Adeliza Elizabeth Gertrude Manners was born to John Henry Manners 5th Duke Rutland [aged 32] and [his wife] Elizabeth Howard Duchess Rutland [aged 30]. She married 22nd February 1848 her first cousin Reverend Frederick John Norman and had issue.

On 20th August 1813 [his son] George John Frederick Manners was born to John Henry Manners 5th Duke Rutland [aged 35] and [his wife] Elizabeth Howard Duchess Rutland [aged 32]. He died aged less than one years old.

On 15th June 1814 [his son] George John Frederick Manners died.

On 16th May 1815 Charles Manners 6th Duke Rutland was born to John Henry Manners 5th Duke Rutland [aged 37] and [his wife] Elizabeth Howard Duchess Rutland [aged 34]. He was educated at Eton College [Map].

On 13th December 1818 John Manners was born to John Henry Manners 5th Duke Rutland [aged 40] and [his wife] Elizabeth Howard Duchess Rutland [aged 38] at Belvoir Castle [Map]. He was educated at Eton College [Map] and Trinity College, Cambridge University [Map] He married 1. 10th June 1851 Catherine Louise Georgina Marlay and had issue 2. 1862 his fifth cousin once removed Janetta Hughan Duchess Rutland and had issue.

On 22nd June 1820 [his son] George John Manners was born to John Henry Manners 5th Duke Rutland [aged 42] and [his wife] Elizabeth Howard Duchess Rutland [aged 39]. He married 4th October 1855 his second cousin Adeliza Matilda Fitzalan, daughter of Henry Charles Howard 13th Duke of Norfolk and Charlotte Sophia Leveson-Gower Duchess Norfolk, and had issue.

On 7th March 1821 [his son-in-law] Andrew Robert Drummond and Elizabeth Frederica Manners [aged 19] were married. She the daughter of John Henry Manners 5th Duke Rutland [aged 43] and Elizabeth Howard Duchess Rutland [aged 40].

On 4th September 1825 Frederick Howard 5th Earl Carlisle [aged 77] died. His son George [aged 51] succeeded 6th Earl Carlisle. Georgiana Cavendish Countess Carlisle [aged 42] by marriage Countess Carlisle.

On 29th November 1825 [his wife] Elizabeth Howard Duchess Rutland [aged 45] died.

On 1st May 1829 [his sister] Katherine Mary Manners Baroness Forester died.

On 1st December 1830 [his son-in-law] Frederick Hervey 2nd Marquess of Bristol [aged 30] and Katherine Isabella Manners [aged 21] were married. She the daughter of John Henry Manners 5th Duke Rutland [aged 52] and Elizabeth Howard Duchess Rutland. He the son of Frederick William Hervey 1st Marquess of Bristol [aged 61] and Elizabeth Albana Upton [aged 55]. They were sixth cousins.

On 17th February 1831 [his son-in-law] Charles James Stuart-Wortley-Mackenzie [aged 28] and Emmeline Charlotte Elizabeth Manners [aged 24] were married. She the daughter of John Henry Manners 5th Duke Rutland [aged 53] and Elizabeth Howard Duchess Rutland. They were fourth cousins.

On 2nd September 1831 [his mother] Mary Isabella Somerset Duchess Rutland [aged 75] died.

Adeline Horsey Recollections. Belvoir Castle [Map] was another delightful place I stayed at, and I remember the fifth Duke of Rutland [aged 66] drinking my health on my eighteenth birthday. His son, the Marquis of Granby [aged 28], was a man of consummate tact and presence of mind. At one of the house-parties there was a pretty young married lady with whom he was greatly smitten, and having received every encouragement, he paid a visit to her room after she had retired. The lady was asleep, and just as the Marquis was about to rouse her, the door opened, and the husband, whom he supposed to be otherwise engaged, appeared unexpectedly on the scene. It was an embarrassing moment, but the Marquis, who was equal to the occasion, held up a warning finger and exclaimed in an anxious whisper, "Hush! don't disturb her, she is fast asleep; I was passing, and I thought I smelt fire - but all's well". The husband thanked him with honest gratitude, and doubtless felt all the happier for being under the roof of such a solicitous host.

On 22nd February 1848 [his son-in-law] Reverend Frederick John Norman [aged 33] and Adeliza Elizabeth Gertrude Manners [aged 37] were married. She the daughter of John Henry Manners 5th Duke Rutland [aged 70] and Elizabeth Howard Duchess Rutland. They were first cousins.

On 20th April 1848 [his daughter] Katherine Isabella Manners [aged 39] died of smallpox at 47 Eaton Place, Kensington.

On 10th June 1851 John Manners [aged 32] and Catherine Louise Georgina Marlay [aged 20] were married at All Souls, Marylebone [Map]. He the son of John Henry Manners 5th Duke Rutland [aged 73] and Elizabeth Howard Duchess Rutland.

On 4th October 1855 George John Manners [aged 35] and Adeliza Matilda Fitzalan [aged 26] were married. She the daughter of Henry Charles Howard 13th Duke of Norfolk [aged 64] and Charlotte Sophia Leveson-Gower Duchess Norfolk [aged 67]. He the son of John Henry Manners 5th Duke Rutland [aged 77] and Elizabeth Howard Duchess Rutland. They were second cousins.

On 29th October 1855 [his daughter] Emmeline Charlotte Elizabeth Manners [aged 49] died.

On 20th January 1857 John Henry Manners 5th Duke Rutland [aged 79] died. His son Charles [aged 41] succeeded 6th Duke Rutland, 6th Marquess Grandby, 14th Earl of Rutland, 6th Baron Manners of Haddon in Derbyshire.
