He the son of [his grandfather] Adam Gordon Earl Sutherland and [his grandmother] Elizabeth Sutherland 10th Countess Sutherland. They were half fifth cousins. She a great x 4 granddaughter of King Edward III of England.

In 1525 John Gordon 11th Earl Sutherland was born to Alexander Gordon [aged 20].

In August 1529 James Stewart 1st Earl of Moray [aged 30] and Elizabeth Campbell Countess Moray and Sutherland were married. She by marriage Countess Moray. She the daughter of Colin Campbell 3rd Earl Argyll [aged 43] and Jean or Janet Gordon Countess Argyll. He the illegitmate son of King James IV of Scotland and Janet Kennedy [aged 49]. After May 1544 John Gordon 11th Earl Sutherland [aged 19] and Elizabeth Campbell Countess Moray and Sutherland were married. She the daughter of Colin Campbell 3rd Earl Argyll and Jean or Janet Gordon Countess Argyll. They were second cousins. She a great x 5 granddaughter of King Edward III of England.

On 4th May 1546 [his grandmother] Elizabeth Sutherland 10th Countess Sutherland died. Her grandson John [aged 21] succeeded 11th Earl Sutherland. Elizabeth Campbell Countess Moray and Sutherland by marriage Countess Sutherland.

In 1548 John Gordon 11th Earl Sutherland [aged 23] and Helen or Eleanor Stewart Countess Erroll and Sutherland were married. She by marriage Countess Sutherland. She the daughter of John Stewart 3rd Earl Lennox and Isabel or Elizabeth Stewart Countess Lennox [aged 53]. They were fifth cousin once removed. He married 13th December 1573 his second cousin once removed Jean Gordon Countess Bothwell and Sutherland, daughter of George Gordon 4th Earl Huntley.

Before 23rd June 1567 John Gordon 11th Earl Sutherland [aged 42] was poisoned by Isobel Sinclair at Helmsdale Castle, Helmsdale.

William Hay 6th Earl Erroll and Helen or Eleanor Stewart Countess Erroll and Sutherland were married. She by marriage Countess Erroll. She the daughter of John Stewart 3rd Earl Lennox and Isabel or Elizabeth Stewart Countess Lennox. He the son of William Hay 5th Earl Erroll and Elizabeth Ruthven Countess Erroll.
