On 30th September 1577 [his step-father] Robert Beville [aged 5] and [his mother] Mary Coles de Preston were married.

On 3rd June 1593 Richard Knightley was born to Edward Knightley [aged 31] and Mary Coles de Preston [aged 15].

Around 1594 [his father] Edward Knightley [aged 32] and [his mother] Mary Coles de Preston [aged 16] were married.

On 18th November 1598 [his father] Edward Knightley [aged 36] died.

On 19th June 1610 [his mother] Mary Coles de Preston [aged 32] died.

On 9th December 1618 [his uncle] Valentine Knightley [aged 63] died. He was buried at St Mary's Church, Fawsley [Map]. Richard Knightley [aged 25] inherited Fawsley Hall, Northamptonshire [Map].

In 1621 Richard Knightley [aged 27] was elected MP Northamptonshire.

In 1626 Richard Knightley [aged 32] was appointed High Sheriff of Northamptonshire.

On 9th September 1637 Richard Knightley [aged 44] made his will:

£100 to the poor of the parish to be controlled by the Overseers of the Poor and Minister of the Church to purchase corn

that his trustee John CREW raise £2,500 from the rents and profits of his estates at Fawsley, Snorscombe, Charwelton, Byfield and Blakesley and purchase a £200 annuity for his kinsman Seymour KNIGHTLEY and a £100 annuity for Seymour's son Richard KNIGHTLEY for the rest of their lives

if his trustee cannot purchase the above annuities with the £2,500 then it should be divided; £1,666 13s 4d to Seymour KNIGHTLEY and £833 6s 8d to Seymour's son Richard KNIGHTLEY

Memoires of Jacques du Clercq

This is a translation of the 'Memoires of Jacques du Clercq', published in 1823 in two volumes, edited by Frederic, Baron de Reissenberg. In his introduction Reissenberg writes: 'Jacques du Clercq tells us that he was born in 1424, and that he was a licentiate in law and a counsellor to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in the castellany of Douai, Lille, and Orchies. It appears that he established his residence at Arras. In 1446, he married the daughter of Baldwin de la Lacherie, a gentleman who lived in Lille. We read in the fifth book of his Memoirs that his father, also named Jacques du Clercq, had married a lady of the Le Camelin family, from Compiègne. His ancestors, always attached to the counts of Flanders, had constantly served them, whether in their councils or in their armies.' The Memoires cover a period of nineteen years beginning in in 1448, ending in in 1467. It appears that the author had intended to extend the Memoirs beyond that date; no doubt illness or death prevented him from carrying out this plan. As Reissenberg writes the 'merit of this work lies in the simplicity of its narrative, in its tone of good faith, and in a certain air of frankness which naturally wins the reader’s confidence.' Du Clercq ranges from events of national and international importance, including events of the Wars of the Roses in England, to simple, everyday local events such as marriages, robberies, murders, trials and deaths, including that of his own father in Book 5; one of his last entries.
