On 14th May 1602 [his father] Thomas Savage 1st Viscount Savage [aged 16] and [his mother] Elizabeth Darcy 1st Countess Rivers [aged 21] were married. She the daughter of [his grandfather] Thomas Darcy 1st Earl Rivers [aged 37] and [his grandmother] Mary Kitson Countess Rivers [aged 35].
On 25th February 1603 John Savage 2nd Earl Rivers was born to Thomas Savage 1st Viscount Savage [aged 17] and Elizabeth Darcy 1st Countess Rivers [aged 22]. He was christened at St Botolph's without Bishopgate on 11th March 1603.
In 1613 [his father] Thomas Savage 1st Viscount Savage [aged 27] was created 1st Baron Darcy of Chiche. He the son-in-law of the last Baron of the 1513 creation [his grandfather] Thomas Darcy 1st Earl Rivers [aged 48].
On 14th July 1615 [his grandfather] John Savage 1st Baronet [aged 65] died. His son [his father] Thomas [aged 29] succeeded 2nd Baronet Savage of Rocksavage in Cheshire. [his mother] Elizabeth Darcy 1st Countess Rivers [aged 34] by marriage Lady Savage of Rocksavage in Cheshire.
On 5th July 1621 [his grandfather] Thomas Darcy 1st Earl Rivers [aged 56] was created 1st Viscount Colchester with a special remainder to his grandson John Savage 2nd Earl Rivers [aged 18]. [his grandmother] Mary Kitson Countess Rivers [aged 54] by marriage Viscountess Colchester
On 18th December 1622 [his brother-in-law] John Paulet 5th Marquess Winchester [aged 24] and [his sister] Jane Savage Marchioness Winchester were married. She the daughter of [his father] Thomas Savage 1st Viscount Savage [aged 36] and [his mother] Elizabeth Darcy 1st Countess Rivers [aged 41]. He the son of William Paulet 4th Marquess Winchester [aged 63] and Lucy Cecil Marchioness Winchester. They were fourth cousins.
Before 1626 John Savage 2nd Earl Rivers [aged 22] and Catherine Parker [aged 28] were married. He the son of Thomas Savage 1st Viscount Savage [aged 39] and Elizabeth Darcy 1st Countess Rivers [aged 44].
Around 1626 [his daughter] Jane Savage Baroness Chandos was born to John Savage 2nd Earl Rivers [aged 22] and [his wife] Catherine Parker [aged 29]. She married (1) 17th January 1653 her third cousin once removed George Brydges 6th Baron Chandos, son of Grey Brydges 5th Baron Chandos and Anne Stanley Countess Castlehaven (2) before 1663 George Pitt and had issue.
On 4th November 1626 [his grandfather] Thomas Darcy 1st Earl Rivers [aged 61] was created 1st Earl Rivers with a special remainder to his grandson John Savage 2nd Earl Rivers [aged 23]. [his grandmother] Mary Kitson Countess Rivers [aged 59] by marriage Countess Rivers.
Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke
Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson.

Around 1628 [his son] Thomas Savage 3rd Earl Rivers was born to John Savage 2nd Earl Rivers [aged 24] and [his wife] Catherine Parker [aged 31]. He married (1) 1647 his fourth cousin once removed Elizabeth Scrope Countess Rivers, daughter of Emanuel Scrope 1st Earl of Sunderland and Martha Jeanes, and had issue (2) 1684 his fifth cousin Arabella Bertie Countess Rivers, daughter of Robert Bertie 3rd Earl Lindsey and Mary Massingberd.
On 4th February 1629 William Paulet 4th Marquess Winchester [aged 70] died. His son [his brother-in-law] John [aged 31] succeeded 5th Marquess Winchester, 5th Earl Wiltshire, 5th Baron St John. [his sister] Jane Savage Marchioness Winchester by marriage Marchioness Winchester.
In 1631 [his sister] Jane Savage Marchioness Winchester died in childbirth. Her epitaph was written by John Milton [aged 22]...

On 20th November 1635 [his father] Thomas Savage 1st Viscount Savage [aged 49] died. His son John [aged 32] succeeded 2nd Viscount Savage, 2nd Baron Darcy of Chiche, 3rd Baronet Savage of Rocksavage in Cheshire.
On 25th February 1640 [his grandfather] Thomas Darcy 1st Earl Rivers [aged 75] died at Winchester House Broad Street. His grandson John [aged 37] succeeded 2nd Earl Rivers, 2nd Viscount Colchester. Baron Darcy of Chiche extinct.
In 1641 [his mother] Elizabeth Darcy 1st Countess Rivers [aged 60] was created 1st Countess Rivers for life by King Charles I of England, Scotland and Ireland [aged 40] since she had been passed over when her father's Earldom Countess Rivers passed from her father to her eldest son John Savage 2nd Earl Rivers [aged 37].
Before 1642 [his brother-in-law] Robert Brudenell 2nd Earl Cardigan [aged 34] and [his sister] Anna Savage Countess Cardigan were married. She by marriage Countess Cardigan. She the daughter of [his father] Thomas Savage 1st Viscount Savage and [his mother] Elizabeth Darcy 1st Countess Rivers [aged 60]. He the son of Thomas Brudenell 1st Earl Cardigan [aged 58] and Mary Tresham Countess Cardigan.
In 1645 [his wife] Catherine Parker [aged 48] died.
In 1647 Thomas Savage 3rd Earl Rivers [aged 19] and Elizabeth Scrope Countess Rivers [aged 20] were married. She the illegitmate daughter of Emanuel Scrope 1st Earl of Sunderland and Martha Jeanes. He the son of John Savage 2nd Earl Rivers [aged 43] and Catherine Parker. They were fourth cousin once removed.
Before 6th March 1647 John Savage 2nd Earl Rivers [aged 44] and Mary Ogle Countess Rivers were married. She by marriage Countess Rivers. He the son of Thomas Savage 1st Viscount Savage and Elizabeth Darcy 1st Countess Rivers [aged 66].
This is a translation of the 'Memoires of Jacques du Clercq', published in 1823 in two volumes, edited by Frederic, Baron de Reissenberg. In his introduction Reissenberg writes: 'Jacques du Clercq tells us that he was born in 1424, and that he was a licentiate in law and a counsellor to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in the castellany of Douai, Lille, and Orchies. It appears that he established his residence at Arras. In 1446, he married the daughter of Baldwin de la Lacherie, a gentleman who lived in Lille. We read in the fifth book of his Memoirs that his father, also named Jacques du Clercq, had married a lady of the Le Camelin family, from Compiègne. His ancestors, always attached to the counts of Flanders, had constantly served them, whether in their councils or in their armies.' The Memoires cover a period of nineteen years beginning in in 1448, ending in in 1467. It appears that the author had intended to extend the Memoirs beyond that date; no doubt illness or death prevented him from carrying out this plan. As Reissenberg writes the 'merit of this work lies in the simplicity of its narrative, in its tone of good faith, and in a certain air of frankness which naturally wins the reader’s confidence.' Du Clercq ranges from events of national and international importance, including events of the Wars of the Roses in England, to simple, everyday local events such as marriages, robberies, murders, trials and deaths, including that of his own father in Book 5; one of his last entries.

On 9th March 1650 [his mother] Elizabeth Darcy 1st Countess Rivers [aged 69] died. Earl Rivers extinct since it was a created for life only.
On 17th January 1653 [his son-in-law] George Brydges 6th Baron Chandos [aged 32] and Jane Savage Baroness Chandos [aged 27] were married at Hedgerley, Buckinghamshire. She by marriage Baroness Chandos of Sudeley. She the daughter of John Savage 2nd Earl Rivers [aged 49] and Catherine Parker. He the son of Grey Brydges 5th Baron Chandos and Anne Stanley Countess Castlehaven. They were third cousin once removed. He a great x 4 grandson of King Henry VII of England and Ireland.
On 10th October 1654 John Savage 2nd Earl Rivers [aged 51] died at Frodsham Castle [Map]. His son Thomas [aged 26] succeeded 3rd Earl Rivers, 3rd Viscount Colchester, 3rd Viscount Savage, 3rd Baron Darcy of Chiche, 4th Baronet Savage of Rocksavage in Cheshire. Elizabeth Scrope Countess Rivers [aged 27] by marriage Countess Rivers.
On 12th October 1654 John Savage 2nd Earl Rivers [deceased] was buried at Macclesfield, Cheshire [Map].
Before 25th January 1658 [his former wife] Mary Ogle Countess Rivers died.
Samuel Pepys' Diary. 3rd April 1664. Lord's Day. Being weary last night lay long, and called up by W. Joyce. So I rose, and his business was to ask advice of me, he being summonsed to the House of Lords to-morrow, for endeavouring to arrest my Lady Peters1 for a debt. I did give him advice, and will assist him. He staid all the morning, but would not dine with me.
Note 1. Elizabeth, daughter of John Savage, second Earl Rivers, and first wife to William, fourth Lord Petre [aged 38], who was, in 1678, impeached by the Commons of high treason, and died under confinement in the Tower, January 5th, 1683, s. p. B.
