Around 1570 Catherine Ogle 8th Baroness Ogle was born to Cuthbert Ogle 7th Baron Ogle [aged 30] and Catherine Carnaby Baroness Ogle [aged 27]. She a great x 3 granddaughter of King Edward IV of England. Coefficient of inbreeding 1.60%.

In 1583 [her brother-in-law] Edward Talbot 8th Earl of Shrewsbury [aged 21] and [her sister] Joane Ogle Countess Shrewsbury and Waterford [aged 17] were married. She by marriage Countess of Shrewsbury Countess Waterford. He the son of George Talbot 6th Earl of Shrewsbury [aged 55] and Gertrude Manners Countess Shrewsbury and Waterford. They were fourth cousin once removed. She a great x 3 granddaughter of King Edward IV of England.

Before 6th December 1592 Charles Cavendish [aged 39] and Catherine Ogle 8th Baroness Ogle [aged 22] were married. He the son of William Cavendish and Bess of Hardwick Countess Shrewsbury and Waterford [aged 65].

On 6th December 1592 [her son] William Cavendish 1st Duke Newcastle upon Tyne was born to [her husband] Charles Cavendish [aged 39] and Catherine Ogle 8th Baroness Ogle [aged 22] at Handsworth Manor. He a great x 4 grandson of King Edward IV of England. He married (1) 1618 Elizabeth Bassett Countess Newcastle upon Tyne and had issue (2) 1645 his fourth cousin Margaret Lucas Duchess Newcastle upon Tyne.

On 20th November 1597 [her father] Cuthbert Ogle 7th Baron Ogle [aged 57] died at Cockle Park, Northumberland [Map]. Baron Ogle abeyant between his two daughters [her sister] Joane Ogle Countess Shrewsbury and Waterford [aged 31] and Catherine Ogle 8th Baroness Ogle [aged 27].

After 1603 [her brother-in-law] William Cavendish 1st Earl Devonshire [aged 50] and Elizabeth Boughton Countess Devonshire [aged 35] were married. He the son of William Cavendish and [her mother-in-law] Bess of Hardwick Countess Shrewsbury and Waterford [aged 76].

In 1605 [her brother-in-law] William Cavendish 1st Earl Devonshire [aged 52] was created 1st Baron Cavendish Hardwick. Elizabeth Boughton Countess Devonshire [aged 37] by marriage Baroness Cavendish Hardwick.

Death of Bess of Hardwick

On 13th February 1608 Bess of Hardwick [aged 81] died. She was buried in All Saints Church, Derby [Map]. Her monument, which she had constructed before her death, was designed by Robert Smythson [aged 38]. She left nothing in her will for her 'bad son' Henry Cavendish [aged 57]. He did, however, inherit Chatsworth House, Derbyshire [Map] which he subsequently sold in 1609 to his brother William Cavendish 1st Earl Devonshire [aged 55] for £10,000.

The date of her funeral somewhat complicated. Rawsons 1910 book "Bess of Hardwick and her Circle" quotes Simpson's National Records of Derby for 1608: "The old Countess of Shrewsbury died about Candlemas this year, whose funeral was about Holy Thursday. A great frost this year. The witches of Bakewell hanged." Holy Thursday, the Feast of the Ascension, is thirty-nine days after Easter. Easter in 1608 was on the 6th of April, putting Holy Thursday on the 15th of May.

Ethel Carleton Williams "Bess of Hardwick", 1959, has a note: "9. The date of Bess of Hardwick's funeral is uncertain. The date on the coffin plate is said to be February 1608 (Cox and Hope, Chronicles of the Collegiate Church of All Saints, Derby), but on 31 March 1608 Gilbert Talbot wrote to Robert Cecil, excusing himself for not attending St George's Feast on the ground that his mother-in-law's funeral was to be on St George's Day (23 April). Later, on 3rd of April, the Earl of Arundel wrote to Gilbert (his father-in-law), 'the funeral at Derby is appointed to be either on the fourth or fifth of May, which Garter yet knoweth not, but rather thinketh on the fourth because the other is a holy day'".

Neither of which provide a definite answer. The former being around the 15th of May, the latter 'rather thinketh' the 4th of May. Are there any other contemporary sources available?

Charles Cavendish: On 28th November 1553 he was born to William Cavendish and Bess of Hardwick. Before 6th December 1592 Charles Cavendish and Catherine Ogle 8th Baroness Ogle were married. He the son of William Cavendish and Bess of Hardwick Countess Shrewsbury and Waterford. On 4th April 1617 Charles Cavendish died.

Memoires of Jacques du Clercq

This is a translation of the 'Memoires of Jacques du Clercq', published in 1823 in two volumes, edited by Frederic, Baron de Reissenberg. In his introduction Reissenberg writes: 'Jacques du Clercq tells us that he was born in 1424, and that he was a licentiate in law and a counsellor to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in the castellany of Douai, Lille, and Orchies. It appears that he established his residence at Arras. In 1446, he married the daughter of Baldwin de la Lacherie, a gentleman who lived in Lille. We read in the fifth book of his Memoirs that his father, also named Jacques du Clercq, had married a lady of the Le Camelin family, from Compiègne. His ancestors, always attached to the counts of Flanders, had constantly served them, whether in their councils or in their armies.' The Memoires cover a period of nineteen years beginning in in 1448, ending in in 1467. It appears that the author had intended to extend the Memoirs beyond that date; no doubt illness or death prevented him from carrying out this plan. As Reissenberg writes the 'merit of this work lies in the simplicity of its narrative, in its tone of good faith, and in a certain air of frankness which naturally wins the reader’s confidence.' Du Clercq ranges from events of national and international importance, including events of the Wars of the Roses in England, to simple, everyday local events such as marriages, robberies, murders, trials and deaths, including that of his own father in Book 5; one of his last entries.

On 10th January 1623 [her mother] Catherine Carnaby Baroness Ogle [aged 80] died.

Around 4th January 1626 Joane Ogle Countess Shrewsbury and Waterford [aged 60] died. Her sister Catherine [aged 56] abeyance terminated 8th Baroness Ogle.

On 18th April 1629 Catherine Ogle 8th Baroness Ogle [aged 59] died at Bothal, Northumberland [Map]. Her son William [aged 36] succeeded 9th Baron Ogle.
