Evelyn's Diary. 26 May 1659. Came to see me my Lord George Berkeley (age 31), Sir William Ducie, and Sir George Pott's son of Norfolk.

Evelyn's Diary. 09 May 1660. I was desired and designed to accompany my Lord Berkeley (age 32) with the public address of the Parliament, General, etc., to the King (age 29), and invite him to come over and assume his Kingly Government, he being now at Breda [Map]; but I was yet so weak, I could not make that journey by sea, which was not a little to my detriment, so I went to London to excuse myself, returning the 10th, having yet received a gracious message from his Majesty (age 29) by Major Scot and Colonel Tuke (age 45).

Evelyn's Diary. 01 Sep 1662. Being invited by Lord Berkeley (age 34), I went to Durdans, where dined his Majesty (age 32), the Queen (age 23), Duke, Duchess (age 25), Prince Rupert (age 42), Prince Edward, and abundance of noblemen. I went, after dinner, to visit my brother (age 45) of Woodcot, my sister having been delivered of a son a little before, but who had now been two days dead.

Pepy's Diary. 01 Sep 1662. Up betimes at my lodging and to my office and among my workmen, and then with Sir W. Batten (age 61) and Sir W. Pen (age 41) by coach to St. James's, this being the first day of our meeting there by the Duke's (age 28) order; but when we come, we found him going out by coach with his Duchess (age 25), and he told us he was to go abroad with the Queen (age 23) to-day (to Durdans, it seems, to dine with my Lord Barkeley (age 34), where I have been very merry when I was a little boy); so we went and staid a little at Mr. Coventry's (age 34) chamber, and I to my Lord Sandwich's (age 37), who is gone to wait upon the King (age 32) and Queen (age 23) today.

Evelyn's Diary. 24 Feb 1664. My Lord George Berkeley (age 36), of Durdans, and Sir Samuel Tuke (age 49) came to visit me. We went on board Sir William Petty's (age 40) double-bottomed vessel, and so to London.

Pepy's Diary. 05 Mar 1664. Up and to the office, where, though I had a great cold, I was forced to speak much upon a publique meeting of the East India Company, at our office; where our own company was full, and there was also my Lord George Barkeley (age 36), in behalfe of the company of merchants (I suppose he is on that company), who, hearing my name, took notice of me, and condoled my cozen Edward Pepys's death, not knowing whose son I was, nor did demand it of me. We broke up without coming to any conclusion, for want of my Lord Marlborough (age 46).

Evelyn's Diary. 22 May 1666. Waited on my Lord Chancellor (age 57) at his new palace; and Lord Berkeley's (age 38) built next to it.

Evelyn's Diary. 14 Jul 1666. Sat at the Tower [Map] with J. Duncomb (age 44) and Lord Berkeley (age 38), to sign deputations for undertakers to furnish their proportions of saltpetre.

Pepy's Diary. 30 May 1667. Several fine experiments were shown her of colours, loadstones, microscopes, and of liquors among others, of one that did, while she was there, turn a piece of roasted mutton into pure blood, which was very rare. Here was Mrs. Moore of Cambridge, whom I had not seen before, and I was glad to see her; as also a very pretty black boy that run up and down the room, somebody's child in Arundel House [Map]. After they had shown her many experiments, and she cried still she was full of admiration, she departed, being led out and in by several Lords that were there; among others Lord George Barkeley (age 39) and Earl of Carlisle (age 38), and a very pretty young man, the Duke of Somerset (age 13).

Pepy's Diary. 14 Jul 1667. By and by he parted, and we took coach and to take the ayre, there being a fine breeze abroad; and I went and carried them to the well, and there filled some bottles of water to carry home with me; and there talked with the two women that farm the well, at £12 per annum, of the lord of the manor, Mr. Evelyn (age 50) (who with his lady, and also my Lord George Barkeley's (age 39) [his wife] lady, and their fine [his daughter] daughter (age 17), that the King of France (age 28) liked so well, and did dance so rich in jewells before the King (age 37) at the Ball I was at, at our Court, last winter, and also their [his son] son (age 18), a Knight of the Bath, were at church this morning).

Evelyn's Diary. 13 Aug 1673. I rode to Durdans, where I dined at my Lord Berkeley's (age 45) of Berkeley Castle, my old and noble friend, it being his wedding anniversary [Note. 11 Aug 1646 he married [his wife] Elizabeth Massingberd Couness Berkeley], where I found the Duchess of Albemarle (age 19), and other company, and returned home on that evening late.

Evelyn's Diary. 27 Oct 1675. Lord Berkeley (age 47) coming into Council, fell down in the gallery at Whitehall [Map], in a fit of apoplexy, and being carried into my Lord Chamberlain's (age 57) lodgings, several famous doctors were employed all that night, and with much ado he was at last recovered to some sense, by applying hot fire pans and spirit of amber to his head; but nothing was found so effectual as cupping him on the shoulders. It was almost a miraculous restoration. The next day he was carried to Berkeley House [Map]. This stopped his journey for the present, and caused my stay in town. He had put all his affairs and his whole estate in England into my hands during his intended absence, which though I was very unfit to undertake, in regard of many businesses which then took me up, yet, upon the great importunity of my lady (age 23) and Mr. Godolphin (age 30) (to whom I could refuse nothing) I did take it on me. It seems when he was Deputy in Ireland, not long before, he had been much wronged by one he left in trust with his affairs, and therefore wished for some unmercenary friend who would take that trouble on him; this was to receive his rents, look after his houses and tenants, solicit supplies from the Lord Treasurer (age 43), and correspond weekly with him, more than enough to employ any drudge in England; but what will not friendship and love make one do?.

Evelyn's Diary. 10 Nov 1675. Being the day appointed for my Lord Ambassador (age 47) to set out, I met them with my coach at New Cross. There were with him my [his wife] Lady his wife, and my dear friend, Mrs. Godolphin (age 23), who, out of an extraordinary friendship, would needs accompany my lady to Paris [Map], and stay with her some time, which was the chief inducement for permitting my son (age 20) to travel, but I knew him safe under her inspection, and in regard my Lord (age 47) himself had promised to take him into his special favor, he having intrusted all he had to my care.

Evelyn's Diary. 10 Nov 1675. Thus we set out three coaches (besides mine), three wagons, and about forty horses. It being late, and my Lord (age 47) as yet but valetudinary, we got but to Dartford, Kent [Map], the first day, the next to Sittingbourne, Kent [Map].

Evelyn's Diary. 14 Nov 1675. Being Sunday, my Lord (age 47) having before delivered to me his letter of attorney, keys, seal, and his Will, we took a solemn leave of one another upon the beach, the coaches carrying them into the sea to the boats, which delivered them to Captain Gunman's (age 41) yacht, the "Mary". Being under sail, the castle gave them seventeen guns, which Captain Gunman (age 41) answered with eleven. Hence, I went to church, to beg a blessing on their voyage.

Evelyn's Diary. 23 Mar 1676. To Twickenham Park, Lord Berkeley's (age 48) country seat, to examine how the bailiffs and servants ordered matters.

Evelyn's Diary. 02 Sep 1676. I paid £1,700 to the Marquis de Sissac, which he had lent to my Lord Berkeley (age 48), and which I heard the Marquis lost at play in a night or two.

Evelyn's Diary. 19 Jun 1682. The Bantam, or East India Ambassadors (at this time we had in London the Russian, Moroccan, and Indian Ambassadors), being invited to dine at Lord George Berkeley's (age 54) (now Earl), I went to the entertainment to contemplate the exotic guests. They were both very hard-favored, and much resembling in countenance some sort of monkeys. We ate at two tables, the Ambassadors and interpreter by themselves. Their garments were rich Indian silks, flowered with gold, viz, a close waistcoat to their knees, drawers, naked legs, and on their heads caps made like fruit baskets. They wore poisoned daggers at their bosoms, the hafts carved with some ugly serpents' or devils' heads, exceedingly keen, and of Damascus metal. They wore no sword. The second Ambassador (sent it seems to succeed in case the first should die by the way in so tedious a journey), having been at Mecca, wore a Turkish or Arab sash, a little part of the linen hanging down behind his neck, with some other difference of habit, and was half a negro, bare legged and naked feet, and deemed a very holy man. They sat cross-legged like Turks, and sometimes in the posture of apes and monkeys; their nails and teeth as black as jet, and shining, which being the effect, as to their teeth, of perpetually chewing betel to preserve them from the toothache, much raging in their country, is esteemed beautiful.

Evelyn's Diary. 14 Jul 1683. I visited Mr. Fraser, a learned Scotch gentleman, whom I had formerly recommended to Lord Berkeley (age 55) for the instruction and government of his son, since dead at sea. He had now been in Holland at the sale of the learned Heinsius's library, and showed me some very rare and curious books, and some MSS., which he had purchased to good icon. There were three or four Herbals in miniature, accurately done, divers Roman antiquities of Verona, and very many books of Aldus's impression.
