He a great x 3 grandson of King James II of England Scotland and Ireland. He married 1818 Maria Liddell Marchioness Normanby, daughter of Thomas Liddell 1st Baron Ravensworth and Maria Susannah Simpson Baroness Calthorpe, and had issue.

In 1809 [his son] Augustus Frederick Phipps was born to Henry Phipps 1st Earl Mulgrave [aged 53] and [his wife] Martha Sophia Thomson Maling Countess Mulgrave. He a great x 3 grandson of King James II of England Scotland and Ireland. He married before 22nd August 1887 his half fourth cousin once removed Mary Elizabeth Emily Fitzroy, daughter of Henry Fitzroy 5th Duke Grafton and Mary Caroline Berkeley Duchess Grafton.
