On 30th July 1768 William "Kitty" Courtenay 9th Earl Devon was born to William Courtenay 8th Earl Devon [aged 25] and Frances Clack Countess Devon. She was baptised on the 30th August 1768.

On 25th March 1782 [his mother] Frances Clack Countess Devon died.

After 1784 William Beckford [aged 23] lived life as a recluse after his correspondence with William "Kitty" Courtenay 9th Earl Devon [aged 15] were publicised by the earl's uncle.

On 14th October 1788 [his father] William Courtenay 8th Earl Devon [aged 45] died. His son William [aged 20] de jure 9th Earl Devon, 3rd Viscount Courtenay.

On 3rd September 1790 [his brother-in-law] George Annesley 2nd Earl Mountnorris [aged 19] and [his sister] Anne Courtenay Countess Mountnorris [aged 16] were married. She by marriage Countess Mountnorris of Mountnorris Castle in Armagh. She the daughter of [his father] William Courtenay 8th Earl Devon and [his mother] Frances Clack Countess Devon. He the son of Arthur Annesley 1st Earl Mountnorris [aged 46] and Lucy Lyttelton Baronet.

On 9th May 1797 [his brother-in-law] George Thynne 2nd Baron Carteret [aged 27] and [his sister] Harriet Courtenay Baroness Carteret [aged 25] were married. She by marriage Baroness Carteret of Hawnes. She the daughter of [his father] William Courtenay 8th Earl Devon and [his mother] Frances Clack Countess Devon. He the son of Thomas Thynne 1st Marquess of Bath and Elizabeth Bentinck Marchioness Bath [aged 61].

On 2nd August 1798 [his brother-in-law] John Vaughan 3rd Earl Lisburne [aged 29] and [his sister] Lucy Courtenay Countess Lisburne [aged 28] were married. She the daughter of [his father] William Courtenay 8th Earl Devon and [his mother] Frances Clack Countess Devon. He the son of Wilmot Vaughan 1st Earl Lisburne [aged 70] and Dorothy Shafto Countess Lisburne [aged 65]. They were half fourth cousin once removed.

On 6th May 1820 Wilmot Vaughan 2nd Earl Lisburne [aged 64] died at Shillingthorpe Hall, unmarried. He was buried at St Andrew's Church, Enfield. His half brother [his brother-in-law] John [aged 51] succeeded 3rd Earl Lisburne, 4th Viscount Lisburne. [his sister] Lucy Courtenay Countess Lisburne [aged 49] by marriage Countess Lisburne.

Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke

Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson.

On 14th April 1826 [his sister] Harriet Courtenay Baroness Carteret [aged 54] died.

In 1831 it was decided that the Earldom of Devon had been created in 1553 for "heirs male forever", rather than to the "heirs male of his body" so William Courtenay 2nd Earl Devon should have succeeded his cousin Edward Courtenay 1st Earl Devon. William "Kitty" Courtenay 9th Earl Devon [aged 62] was granted 9th Earl Devon.

On 6th January 1835 [his sister] Anne Courtenay Countess Mountnorris [aged 60] died.

On 26th May 1835 William "Kitty" Courtenay 9th Earl Devon [aged 66] died at Paris [Map]. His second cousin William [aged 57] succeeded 10th Earl Devon. Viscount Courtenay extinct. Henrietta Leslie Pepys Countess Devon [aged 57] by marriage Countess Devon.

On 12th June 1835 William "Kitty" Courtenay 9th Earl Devon [deceased] was buried at Powderham, Devon.
