Charles Talbot 1st Duke Shrewsbury 1660-1718

Paternal Family Tree: Talbot

Maternal Family Tree: Katherine de la Pole 1416-1488

Around 1650 [his father] Francis Talbot 11th Earl of Shrewsbury [aged 27] and Anne Conyers were married. They had two children who died young. He the son of [his grandfather] John Talbot 10th Earl of Shrewsbury [aged 49] and [his grandmother] Mary Fortescue Countess Shrewsbury and Waterford.

Before 24th July 1660 [his father] Francis Talbot 11th Earl of Shrewsbury [aged 37] and [his mother] Anna Maria Brudenell Countess Shrewsbury and Waterford [aged 18] were married. She by marriage Countess of Shrewsbury Countess Waterford. She the daughter of [his grandfather] Robert Brudenell 2nd Earl Cardigan [aged 53] and [his grandmother] Anna Savage Countess Cardigan. He the son of John Talbot 10th Earl of Shrewsbury and Mary Fortescue Countess Shrewsbury and Waterford. They were third cousin once removed.

On 24th July 1660 Charles Talbot 1st Duke Shrewsbury was born to Francis Talbot 11th Earl of Shrewsbury [aged 37] and Anna Maria Brudenell Countess Shrewsbury and Waterford [aged 18].

On 16th January 1668 George Villiers 2nd Duke of Buckingham [aged 39] fought a duel at Barn Elms with [his father] Francis Talbot 11th Earl of Shrewsbury [aged 45] with whose wife [his mother] Anna Maria Brudenell Countess Shrewsbury and Waterford [aged 25] he was conducting a relationship. The duel may, less plausibly, be about Talbot's first wife Anne Conyers although Pepys appears to contradict this. Francis Talbot 11th Earl of Shrewsbury was fatally wounded dying two months later. Following the duel George Villiers 2nd Duke of Buckingham commenced living with Shrewsbury's wife Anne Maria. His wife Mary Fairfax Duchess Buckingham [aged 29] returned to live with her parents.

Admiral Robert Holmes [aged 46] and Jenkins acted as seconds to George Villiers 2nd Duke of Buckingham. Jenkins was killed.

John Talbot of Lacock [aged 37] and Bernard Howard [aged 27] acted as seconds to Francis Talbot 11th Earl of Shrewsbury. Note. Bernard Howard a guess based on name and age.

An alternative version of his death is that is was from heart disease. The autopsy after his death showed the sword wound was perfectly healed but his liver and heart were in a very bad state.

Before 24th June 1677 [his step-father] George Rodney Brydges and [his mother] Anna Maria Brudenell Countess Shrewsbury and Waterford [aged 35] were married. She the daughter of [his grandfather] Robert Brudenell 2nd Earl Cardigan [aged 70] and [his grandmother] Anna Savage Countess Cardigan. They were fifth cousin once removed.

John Evelyn's Diary. 19th September 1679. My Lord Sunderland [aged 38], one of the principal Secretaries of State, invited me to dinner, where was the King's [aged 49] natural son, the Earl of Plymouth [aged 22], the Earl of Shrewsbury [aged 19], Earl of Essex [aged 47], Earl of Mulgrave [aged 31], Mr. Hyde, and Mr. Godolphin [aged 34]. After dinner I went to prayers at Eton College [Map], and visited Mr. Henry Godolphin [aged 31], fellow there, and Dr. Craddock.

John Evelyn's Diary. 19th February 1686. Many bloody and notorious duels were fought about this time. The Duke of Grafton [aged 22] kill'd Mr. Stanley, brother to the Earle of Shrewsbury [aged 25], indeede upon an almost insufferable provocation. It is to be hop'd his Ma* [aged 52] will at last severely remedy this unchristian custome. Lord Sunderland [aged 44] was now Secretary of State, President of the Council, and Premier Minister.

Anne Boleyn. Her Life as told by Lancelot de Carle's 1536 Letter.

In 1536, two weeks after the execution of Anne Boleyn, her brother George and four others, Lancelot du Carle, wrote an extraordinary letter that described Anne's life, and her trial and execution, to which he was a witness. This book presents a new translation of that letter, with additional material from other contemporary sources such as Letters, Hall's and Wriothesley's Chronicles, the pamphlets of Wynkyn the Worde, the Memorial of George Constantyne, the Portuguese Letter and the Baga de Secrets, all of which are provided in Appendices.

In 1699 Charles Talbot 1st Duke Shrewsbury [aged 38] was appointed Lord Chamberlain.

John Evelyn's Diary. 24th April 1700. This week there was a great change of State officers. The Duke of Shrewsbury [aged 39] resigned his Lord Chamberlainship to the Earl of Jersey [aged 44], the Duke's indisposition requiring his retreat. Mr. Vernon [aged 54], Secretary of State, was put out. The Seal was taken from the Lord Chancellor Somers [aged 49], though he had been acquitted by a great majority of votes for what was charged against him in the House of Commons. This being in term time, put some stop to business, many eminent lawyers refusing to accept the office, considering the uncertainty of things in this fluctuating conjuncture. It is certain that this Chancellor was a most excellent lawyer, very learned in all polite literature, a superior pen, master of a handsome style, and of easy conversation; but he is said to make too much haste to be rich, as his predecessor, and most in place in this age did, to a more prodigious excess than was ever known. But the Commons had now so mortified the Court party, and property and liberty were so much invaded in all the neighbouring kingdoms, that their jealousy made them cautious, and every day strengthened the law which protected the people from tyranny.

On 20th April 1702 [his mother] Anna Maria Brudenell Countess Shrewsbury and Waterford [aged 60] died.

In 1705 Charles Talbot 1st Duke Shrewsbury [aged 44] and Adelhida Paleotti Duchess Shrewsbury were married at Augsburg. She by marriage Duchess Shrewsbury. He the son of Francis Talbot 11th Earl of Shrewsbury and Anna Maria Brudenell Countess Shrewsbury and Waterford.
