Biography of Robert Sidney 4th Earl of Leicester 1649-1702

In 1645 [his father] Philip Sidney 3rd Earl of Leicester (age 25) and [his mother] Catherine Cecil were married. She the daughter of William Cecil 2nd Earl Salisbury (age 53) and Catherine Howard Countess Salisbury. He the son of Robert Sidney 2nd Earl of Leicester (age 49) and Dorothy Percy Countess Leicester (age 47).

In 1649 Robert Sidney 4th Earl of Leicester was born to Philip Sidney 3rd Earl of Leicester (age 29) and Catherine Cecil.

In 1652 [his mother] Catherine Cecil died.

In 1672 Robert Sidney 4th Earl of Leicester (age 23) and Elizabeth Egerton Countess Leicester (age 18) were married. She the daughter of John Egerton 2nd Earl Bridgewater (age 48) and Elizabeth Cavendish Countess Bridgewater. He the son of Philip Sidney 3rd Earl of Leicester (age 52) and Catherine Cecil. On 08 Jul 1676 [his son] Philip Sidney 5th Earl of Leicester was born to Robert Sidney 4th Earl of Leicester (age 27) and [his wife] Elizabeth Egerton Countess Leicester (age 22).

On 02 Nov 1677 [his grandfather] Robert Sidney 2nd Earl of Leicester (age 81) died. His son [his father] Philip Sidney 3rd Earl of Leicester (age 58) succeeded 3rd Earl of Leicester, 3rd Viscount Lisle.

Evelyn's Diary. 27 Aug 1678. I took leave of the Duke (age 50), and dined at Mr. Henry Bruncker's (age 51), at the Abbey of Sheene [Map], formerly a monastery of Carthusians, there yet remaining one of their solitary cells with a cross. Within this ample inclosure are several pretty villas and fine gardens of the most excellent fruits, especially Sir William Temple's (lately Ambassador into Holland), and the Lord Lisle's (age 29), son to the [his father] Earl of Leicester (age 59), who has divers rare pictures, above all, that of Sir Brian Tuke's, by Holbein.

Before 12 Feb 1679 [his brother-in-law] Thomas Egerton (age 27) and Hester Busby were married. He the son of John Egerton 2nd Earl Bridgewater (age 55) and Elizabeth Cavendish Countess Bridgewater. He a great x 5 grandson of King Henry VII of England and Ireland.

On 14 Feb 1680 [his son] John Sidney 6th Earl of Leicester was born to Robert Sidney 4th Earl of Leicester (age 31) and [his wife] Elizabeth Egerton Countess Leicester (age 26) at Penshurst Place, Kent [Map].

In 1681 [his son] Thomas Sidney was born to Robert Sidney 4th Earl of Leicester (age 32) and [his wife] Elizabeth Egerton Countess Leicester (age 27).

In 1682 [his son] Jocelyn Sidney 7th Earl of Leicester was born to Robert Sidney 4th Earl of Leicester (age 33) and [his wife] Elizabeth Egerton Countess Leicester (age 28).

On 29 Oct 1685 [his brother-in-law] Thomas Egerton (age 34) died.

Siege of Limerick

Evelyn's Diary. 15 Aug 1690. The unseasonable and most tempestuous weather happening, the naval expedition is hindered, and the extremity of wet causes the Siege of Limerick to be raised, King William (age 39) returned to England. Lord Sidney (age 41) left Governor of what is conquered in Ireland, which is near three parts [in four].

Evelyn's Diary. 25 Mar 1691. Lord Sidney (age 42), principal Secretary of State, gave me a letter to Lord Lucas (age 41), Lieutenant of the Tower, to permit me to visit Lord Clarendon; which this day I did, and dined with him.

Before 1692 [his brother-in-law] William Egerton (age 42) died.

On 06 Mar 1698 [his father] Philip Sidney 3rd Earl of Leicester (age 79) died. His son Robert Sidney 4th Earl of Leicester (age 49) succeeded 4th Earl of Leicester, 4th Viscount Lisle. [his wife] Elizabeth Egerton Countess Leicester (age 44) by marriage Countess of Leicester.

On 11 Nov 1702 Robert Sidney 4th Earl of Leicester (age 53) died. His son [his son] Philip Sidney 5th Earl of Leicester (age 26) succeeded 5th Earl of Leicester, 5th Viscount Lisle.

In 1709 [his former wife] Elizabeth Egerton Countess Leicester (age 55) died.

William Egerton and Honora Leigh Lady Willougby were married. He the son of John Egerton 2nd Earl Bridgewater and Elizabeth Cavendish Countess Bridgewater. They were second cousin once removed. He a great x 5 grandson of King Henry VII of England and Ireland.
