On 10 Apr 1608 [his father] William Cavendish 2nd Earl Devonshire (age 18) and [his mother] Christian Bruce Countess Devonshire were married. He the son of William Cavendish 1st Earl Devonshire (age 55) and Anne Keighley (age 45).

On 10 Oct 1617 William Cavendish 3rd Earl Devonshire was born to William Cavendish 2nd Earl Devonshire (age 27) and Christian Bruce Countess Devonshire.

English Coronation of Charles I

On 02 Feb 1626 King Charles I of England, Scotland and Ireland (age 25) was crowned I King England Scotland and Ireland at Westminster Abbey [Map]. His wife Henrietta Maria Bourbon Queen Consort England (age 16) was not crowned since she being Catholic refused to attend an Anglican service. She watched Charles at a discreet distance.

Robert Radclyffe 5th Earl of Sussex (age 52) carried the Orb.

Francis Talbot 11th Earl of Shrewsbury (age 3) bore the Second Sword of State.

Philip Herbert 4th Earl Pembroke 1st Earl Montgomery (age 41) carried the Spurs.

Francis Manners 6th Earl of Rutland (age 48) bore the Rod with the Dove.

William Cavendish 3rd Earl Devonshire (age 8), James Stanley 7th Earl of Derby (age 19), James Howard 3rd Earl Suffolk (age 6), Roger Palmer (age 49) and Mildmay Fane 2nd Earl of Westmoreland (age 24), John Maynard (age 34) were appointed Knight of the Bath.

John Rayney 1st Baronet (age 25) was knighted.

On 03 Mar 1626 [his grandfather] William Cavendish 1st Earl Devonshire (age 73) died. His son [his father] William Cavendish 2nd Earl Devonshire (age 36) succeeded 2nd Earl Devonshire, 2nd Baron Cavendish Hardwick. [his mother] Christian Bruce Countess Devonshire by marriage Countess Devonshire. On 12 Oct 1616 Henry Cavendish (age 65) died. Both were buried at St Peter's Church, Edensor [Map].

The monument was behind the altar in the original church but moved to a separate chapel in the new church.

Monument formed two bodies under a low four-poster with black Ionic columns and black covering slab. The monument has been attributed to Maximilian Colt (age 51).

Extremely grand architecture above the two martial flanking figures, then arches with, on the left armour, and on the right purple, coronet, and sword hung up, and in the middle an angel holding the black inscription tablet and blowing a trumpet. The whole is surmounted by a big broken pediment.

Henry appears as a skeleton on a straw mat.

On 20 Jun 1628 [his father] William Cavendish 2nd Earl Devonshire (age 38) died at Devonshire House. He was buried at Derby Cathedral [Map]. His son William Cavendish 3rd Earl Devonshire (age 10) succeeded 3rd Earl Devonshire, 3rd Baron Cavendish Hardwick.

On 13 Nov 1638 William Cavendish 3rd Earl Devonshire (age 21) was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Derbyshire in which position he remained until 22 Mar 1642.

On 04 Mar 1639 William Cavendish 3rd Earl Devonshire (age 21) and Elizabeth Cecil Countess Devonshire (age 20) were married. She by marriage Countess Devonshire. She the daughter of William Cecil 2nd Earl Salisbury (age 47) and Catherine Howard Countess Salisbury. He the son of William Cavendish 2nd Earl Devonshire and Christian Bruce Countess Devonshire.

On 25 Jan 1640 [his son] William Cavendish 1st Duke Devonshire was born to William Cavendish 3rd Earl Devonshire (age 22) and [his wife] Elizabeth Cecil Countess Devonshire (age 21).

In Jun 1642 William Cavendish 3rd Earl Devonshire (age 24) was with King Charles I (age 41) at York [Map].

On 20 Jul 1642 William Cavendish 3rd Earl Devonshire (age 24) was expelled from the House of Lords for having refused to come to the bar to answer charges of high crimes and misdemeanors. He left England, and his estates were sequestrated.

On 13 Oct 1642 King Charles I (age 41) stayed the night at the house of William Cavendish 3rd Earl Devonshire (age 25) at Latimer House, Chesham.

In 1645 William Cavendish 3rd Earl Devonshire (age 27) returned to England and submitted to Parliament. He was pardoned for his former delinquency in 1646 and fined £5,000.

In 1645 Philip Sidney 3rd Earl of Leicester (age 25) and [his sister-in-law] Catherine Cecil were married. She the daughter of William Cecil 2nd Earl Salisbury (age 53) and Catherine Howard Countess Salisbury. He the son of Robert Sidney 2nd Earl of Leicester (age 49) and Dorothy Percy Countess Leicester (age 47).

Before 1648 [his brother-in-law] Charles Cecil (age 29) and Diana Maxwell were married. She the daughter of James Maxwell 1st Earl Dirletoun. He the son of William Cecil 2nd Earl Salisbury (age 56) and Catherine Howard Countess Salisbury.

Around 1649 [his daughter] Anne Cavendish Countess Exeter was born to William Cavendish 3rd Earl Devonshire (age 31) and [his wife] Elizabeth Cecil Countess Devonshire (age 30) at Latimer, Buckinghamshire.

In 1652 [his sister-in-law] Catherine Cecil died.

Evelyn's Diary. 30 May 1652. I went to obtain of my Lord Devonshire (age 34) that my nephew, George, might be brought up with my young Lord, his son, to whom I was recommending Mr. Wase (age 25). I also inspected the manner of camleting silk and grograms at one Monsieur La Dorées in Moor-fields, and thence to Colonel Morley (age 36), one of their Council of State, as then called, who had been my schoolfellow, to request a pass for my wife's (age 17) safe landing, and the goods she was to bring with her out of France; which he courteously granted, and did me many other kindnesses, that was a great matter in those days.

In 1660 [his brother-in-law] Charles Cecil (age 41) died.

On 20 Aug 1660 William Cavendish 3rd Earl Devonshire (age 42) was re-appointed Lord Lieutenant of Derbyshire.

In 1662 [his son-in-law] Charles Rich and [his daughter] Anne Cavendish Countess Exeter (age 13) were married. She the daughter of William Cavendish 3rd Earl Devonshire (age 44) and Elizabeth Cecil Countess Devonshire (age 43). He the son of Henry Rich 1st Earl Holland and Isabel Cope Countess Holland.

Evelyn's Diary. 04 Aug 1662. Came to see me the old [his mother] Countess of Devonshire, with that excellent and worthy person, my Lord her son (age 44), from Roehampton, Surrey.

On 26 Oct 1662 [his son] William Cavendish 1st Duke Devonshire (age 22) and [his daughter-in-law] Mary Butler Duchess Devonshire (age 16) were married. She the daughter of James Butler 1st Duke Ormonde (age 52) and Elizabeth Preston Duchess Ormonde (age 47). He the son of William Cavendish 3rd Earl Devonshire (age 45) and Elizabeth Cecil Countess Devonshire (age 43).

On 02 May 1670 [his son-in-law] John Cecil 5th Earl Exeter (age 22) and [his daughter] Anne Cavendish Countess Exeter (age 21) were married. She the daughter of William Cavendish 3rd Earl Devonshire (age 52) and Elizabeth Cecil Countess Devonshire (age 51). He the son of John Cecil 4th Earl Exeter (age 42) and Frances Manners Countess Exeter. They were half third cousin once removed.

On 03 Mar 1671 [his son] Charles Cavendish died.

In 1675 [his mother] Christian Bruce Countess Devonshire died. She was buried at Derby Cathedral [Map].

In 1676 [his brother-in-law] Algernon Cecil died.

On 23 Nov 1684 William Cavendish 3rd Earl Devonshire (age 67) died at his house in Roehampton, Surrey. He was buried in the Henry VII Chapel in Westminster Abbey [Map]. His son [his son] William Cavendish 1st Duke Devonshire (age 44) succeeded 4th Earl Devonshire, 4th Baron Cavendish Hardwick. [his daughter-in-law] Mary Butler Duchess Devonshire (age 38) by marriage Countess Devonshire.

In 1689 [his former wife] Elizabeth Cecil Countess Devonshire (age 70) died.

[his son] Charles Cavendish was born to William Cavendish 3rd Earl Devonshire and Elizabeth Cecil Countess Devonshire.
