Note 3. At this date the parliament stood prorogued from the 2d May to the 13th October.
The above shows merely an intention of the council: to which the lord chancellor (age 53) made some objection: for in a council held at Guildford on the 17th August, "Upon a letter received from the lord chancellor (age 53) of his opinion that it were not convenient to proroge the parliament, another letter was addressed unto him, nevertheless to precede in making out the writtes and despatching of them according to the former order." See the final arrangement hereafter, p. 295.

Note. Riot at the Paul's Cross sermon. This incident is noticed in the public chronicles. Bourne, the preacher, offended the audience by speaking vehemently in the defence of bishop Bonner, and extremely against bishop Ridley. One of the populace threw a dagger at Bourne, which struck one of the sideposts of the pulpit. Maister Bradford, the celebrated Reformer, came forward to persuade the people to quietness, and by the help of that worthy man and of maister Rogers, (both of whom were afterwards sacrificed in cold blood by their religious adversaries,) Bourne was conveyed safely away into Paul's School. Grafton's Abridgement, 1566, and Stowe's Summarie of the same date.
The privy council, which was sitting at the Tower, took immediate alarm at this difturbance. The "order taken" on the same day, in concert with the lord mayor, will be found in their Register. (transcript in MS. Harl. 643, f. 1.) On the 16th Homfrey Palden was "committed to the counter for seditious wordes uttered by him againste the preacher Mr. Burne for his sermon at Paule's crosse on Sunday last;" and the same day the celebrated Bradford and Veron, "two seditious preachers," were committed to the Tower, as was "Theodore Basill, alias Thomas Beacon, another seditious preacher." Diary of Anne Clifford 1617. 12 Aug 1617 and 13 Aug 1617. The 12th and 13th I spent most of the time in playing at Glecko and hearing Moll Neville read the Arcadia.
Autobiography Simon D'Ewes. 30 Jul 1623. On Wednesday, the 30th day of the same month, happened a foolish difference amongst our utter barristers of the Middle Temple, which occasioned me much trouble, and was a seasonable humiliation after my late call to the bar and increase of stipend. There were now divers sargeants-at-law to be made, who were to receive their full investitures next Michaelmas Term. Our late Lent reader, Sergeant Brampton, was the puisne of the three chosen of our Middle Temple, and on Monday, the fourth day of August, he read or argued a case in our Middle Temple Hall in the morning, at which I could not attend long, being in the afternoon to go out mih our reader of New Inn, and to argue his case; which I did accordingly. On Wednesday, August the 6th, Sergeant Brampton read the second time, and so ended his task. On the Friday ensuing, being the 8th day of the same month, began Mr. Davers, our other reader, (whose course it was to read this summer,) and ended it on the next Friday, being the 15th day of August. The residue of this long vacation I spent for the most part in the study of the law and in profitable conference, by which I gained every day more knowledge and found more content in my time studiously spent than in idleness. On Wednesday, the 13th day of August, in the morning about three of the dock, was my sister Elliot bronght to bed of a daughter, at Stow Hall; she was baptized Cecilia. It afterwards died on Thursday, the 4th day of October, in the year 1627, being then near upon four years and two months old.
Diary of Isabella Twysden 1645. the 13 august Sr goirge bunklye left this world for a better at 3 o'clock in the morning 1645 and was buried that night in that church at Lambeth.
Pepy's Diary. 13 Aug 1662. Thence to Lambeth; and there saw the little pleasure-boat in building by the King (age 32), my Lord Brunkard (age 42), and the virtuosoes of the town, according to new lines, which Mr. Pett (age 52) cries up mightily, but how it will prove we shall soon see.
Pepy's Diary. 13 Aug 1663. Thence to Mrs. Hunt's, where I left my wife, and I to walk a little in St. James's Park, while Mrs. Harper might come home, with whom we came to speak about her kinswoman Jane Gentleman to come and live with us as a chamber mayde, and there met with Mr. Hoole my old acquaintance of Magdalen, and walked with him an hour in the Parke, discoursing chiefly of Sir Samuel Morland (age 38), whose lady is gone into France. It seems he buys ground and a farm in the country, and lays out money upon building, and God knows what! so that most of the money he sold his pension of £500 per annum for, to Sir Arthur Slingsby (age 40), is believed is gone. It seems he hath very great promises from the King (age 33), and Hoole hath seen some of the King's letters, under his own hand, to Morland (age 38), promising him great things (and among others, the order of the Garter, as Sir Samuel says); but his lady thought it below her to ask any thing at the King's first coming, believing the King (age 33) would do it of himself, when as Hoole do really think if he had asked to be Secretary of State at the King's first coming, he might have had it. And the other day at her going into France, she did speak largely to the King (age 33) herself, how her husband hath failed of what his Majesty had promised, and she was sure intended him; and the King (age 33) did promise still, as he is a King and a gentleman, to be as good as his word in a little time, to a tittle: but I never believe it.
Pepy's Diary. 13 Aug 1664. Mightly pleased with this I to the office, where all the morning. There offered by Sir W. Pen (age 43) his coach to go to Epsum and carry my wife, I stept out and bade my wife make her ready, but being not very well and other things advising me to the contrary, I did forbear going, and so Mr. Creed dining with me I got him to give my wife and me a play this afternoon, lending him money to do it, which is a fallacy that I have found now once, to avoyde my vowe with, but never to be more practised I swear, and to the new play, at the Duke's house, of "Henry the Fifth"; a most noble play, writ by my Lord Orrery (age 43); wherein Betterton (age 29), Harris (age 30), and Ianthe's (age 27) parts are most incomparably wrote and done, and the whole play the most full of height and raptures of wit and sense, that ever I heard; having but one incongruity, or what did, not please me in it, that is, that King Harry promises to plead for Tudor to their Mistresse, Princesse Katherine of France, more than when it comes to it he seems to do; and Tudor refused by her with some kind of indignity, not with a difficulty and honour that it ought to have been done in to him.
Pepy's Diary. 13 Aug 1668. Thence I to the Office, where all the afternoon [morning??], and then to dinner, where W. Howe dined with me, who tells me for certain that Creed is like to speed in his match with Mrs. Betty Pickering (age 42). Here dined with me also Mr. Hollier (age 59), who is mighty vain in his pretence to talk Latin.
Evelyn's Diary. 13 Aug 1673. I rode to Durdans, where I dined at my Lord Berkeley's (age 45) of Berkeley Castle, my old and noble friend, it being his wedding anniversary [Note. 11 Aug 1646 he married Elizabeth Massingberd Couness Berkeley], where I found the Duchess of Albemarle (age 19), and other company, and returned home on that evening late.

Minninglow. On the 13th of August we opened a barrow [Map] [Roystone Grange Barrow [Map]] at Ryestone Grange, close to Minninglow farm, which is a tolerably perfect mound, 11 yards across and near four feet high, but crossed by a thick stone wall which greatly impeded our operations, and which there is reason to believe prevented the discovery of the primary interment. At one side of the wall we found many bones, both human and animal; the only undisturbed skeleton being that of a ohild, buried about a foot from the surface and unaccompanied by anything of interest; among the animal bones were some teeth of dogs. On the other side of the wall we found an iron knife, of the usual Saxon shape, about a foot beneath the turf; and on the natural surface below, a deposit of calcined bones containing a bone pin. By undercutting the wall as far as practicable, we ascertained that the centre of the barrow was principally of earth surrounded by large stones inclining inwards, and from this locality we drew out a piece of curiously ornamented pottery of primitive manufacture.
