Frederick Augustus Hervey 4th Earl Bristol 1730-1803

On 25th October 1720 [his father] John Hervey 2nd Baron Hervey [aged 24] and [his mother] Mary Lepell Baroness Hervey [aged 20] were married. He the son of [his grandfather] John Hervey 1st Earl Bristol [aged 55] and [his grandmother] Elizabeth Felton Countess Bristol [aged 43].

On 1st August 1730 Frederick Augustus Hervey 4th Earl Bristol was born to John Hervey 2nd Baron Hervey [aged 33] and Mary Lepell Baroness Hervey [aged 30].

On 26th February 1743 [his brother-in-law] Constantine Phipps 1st Baron Mulgrave [aged 20] and [his sister] Lepell Hervey Baroness Mulgrave [aged 19] were married.

On 5th August 1743 [his father] John Hervey 2nd Baron Hervey [aged 46] died. His son [his brother] George [aged 22] succeeded 3rd Baron Hervey of Ickworth in Suffolk.

On 4th August 1744 [his brother] Augustus John Hervey 3rd Earl Bristol [aged 20] and [his sister-in-law] Elizabeth Chudleigh Duchess Kingston upon Hull [aged 23] were married privately at Lainston House Winchester. There marriage remained a secret until she wanted to marry Evelyn Pierrepont 2nd Duke Kingston upon Hull [aged 33] in 1769 at which time she initiated a suit of jactitation¹ against him requiring him to prove they were married. The court found in her favour.

Before 1753 Frederick Augustus Hervey 4th Earl Bristol [aged 22] and Elizabeth Davers Countess Bristol [aged 19] were married. They were half fourth cousin once removed.

In 1753 [his daughter] Mary Caroline Hervey Countess Erne was born to Frederick Augustus Hervey 4th Earl Bristol [aged 22] and [his wife] Elizabeth Davers Countess Bristol [aged 20]. She married 1776 John Crichton 1st Earl Erne, son of Abraham Crichton 1st Baron Erne, and had issue.

In 1755 [his son] George Hervey was born to Frederick Augustus Hervey 4th Earl Bristol [aged 24] and [his wife] Elizabeth Davers Countess Bristol [aged 22]. He died aged ten in 1765.

On or before 29th January 1757, the date he was baptised at Horningsheath, Suffolk, [his son] John Augustus "Jack" Hervey was born to Frederick Augustus Hervey 4th Earl Bristol [aged 26] and [his wife] Elizabeth Davers Countess Bristol [aged 24]. He married 4th October 1779 Elizabeth Drummond.

In 1758 [his daughter] Elizabeth Christiana Hervey Duchess Devonshire was born to Frederick Augustus Hervey 4th Earl Bristol [aged 27] and [his wife] Elizabeth Davers Countess Bristol [aged 25]. She married 1809 her sixth cousin William Cavendish 5th Duke Devonshire, son of William Cavendish 4th Duke Devonshire and Charlotte Elizabeth Boyle Marchioness Hartington, and had issue.

In 1761 [his son] Son Hervey was born to Frederick Augustus Hervey 4th Earl Bristol [aged 30] and [his wife] Elizabeth Davers Countess Bristol [aged 28]. He died aged less than one years old.

In 1761 [his son] Son Hervey died.

In 1765 [his son] George Hervey [aged 10] died at Spa.

In 1767 [his daughter] Louisa Theodosia Hervey Countess Liverpool was born to Frederick Augustus Hervey 4th Earl Bristol [aged 36] and [his wife] Elizabeth Davers Countess Bristol [aged 34]. She married 25th March 1795 Robert Jenkinson 2nd Earl Liverpool, son of Charles Jenkinson 1st Earl Liverpool and Amelia Watts.

On 2nd September 1768 [his mother] Mary Lepell Baroness Hervey [aged 68] died.

On 8th March 1769 Evelyn Pierrepont 2nd Duke Kingston upon Hull [aged 58] and [his sister-in-law] Elizabeth Chudleigh Duchess Kingston upon Hull [aged 48] were married at Keith's Chapel, Mayfair. She by marriage Duchess Kingston upon Hull. Her first alledged husband [his brother] Augustus John Hervey 3rd Earl Bristol [aged 44] was still living. Preferring to avoid a divorce, she had previously issued a suit of jactitation against Hervey, with his collusion, requiring him to cease claiming marriage to her unless proved. After Hervey failed to prove the relationship in court and Chudleigh swore she was unmarried, the consistory court in February 1769 pronounced her a spinster, free to marry.

On 2nd October 1769 [his son] Frederick William Hervey 1st Marquess of Bristol was born to Frederick Augustus Hervey 4th Earl Bristol [aged 39] and [his wife] Elizabeth Davers Countess Bristol [aged 36]. He married before 29th December 1798 Elizabeth Albana Upton, daughter of Clotworthy Upton 1st Baron Templetown and Elizabeth Boughton Baroness Templetown, and had issue.

In 1776 [his son-in-law] John Crichton 1st Earl Erne [aged 45] and Mary Caroline Hervey Countess Erne [aged 23] were married. The difference in their ages was 22 years. She the daughter of Frederick Augustus Hervey 4th Earl Bristol [aged 45] and Elizabeth Davers Countess Bristol [aged 43].

On 4th October 1779 John Augustus "Jack" Hervey [aged 22] and Elizabeth Drummond [aged 21] were married. He the son of Frederick Augustus Hervey 4th Earl Bristol [aged 49] and Elizabeth Davers Countess Bristol [aged 46].

On 23rd December 1779 [his brother] Augustus John Hervey 3rd Earl Bristol [aged 55] died due to a gout in the stomach in St James' Square. His brother Frederick [aged 49] succeeded 4th Earl Bristol, 5th Baron Hervey of Ickworth in Suffolk. [his wife] Elizabeth Davers Countess Bristol [aged 46] by marriage Countess Bristol.

Note 1. 'jactitation'. Where one person falsely asserted that he or she was married to another, the wronged party could obtain an order restraining further repetitions of the falsehood. The action was abolished in England in 1986 and in Ireland in 1995.

In 1795 [his nephew] Henry Phipps 1st Earl Mulgrave [aged 39] and Martha Sophia Thomson Maling Countess Mulgrave were married at St Michael's Church, Houghton le Spring [Map]. She by marriage Baroness Mulgrave of New Ross in Wexford and Baroness Mulgrave.

On 25th March 1795 [his son-in-law] Robert Jenkinson 2nd Earl Liverpool [aged 24] and Louisa Theodosia Hervey Countess Liverpool [aged 28] were married at Wimbledon, Surrey. She the daughter of Frederick Augustus Hervey 4th Earl Bristol [aged 64] and Elizabeth Davers Countess Bristol [aged 62]. He the son of Charles Jenkinson 1st Earl Liverpool [aged 65] and Amelia Watts.

In 1796 [his son] John Augustus "Jack" Hervey [aged 38] died aboard hs shp "The Zealous" and was buried on 26th September 1796 at Ickworth, Suffolk, England.

Before 29th December 1798 Frederick William Hervey 1st Marquess of Bristol [aged 29] and Elizabeth Albana Upton [aged 23] were married. He the son of Frederick Augustus Hervey 4th Earl Bristol [aged 68] and Elizabeth Davers Countess Bristol [aged 65].

In 1799 Frederick Augustus Hervey 4th Earl Bristol [aged 68] abeyance terminated 5th Baron Howard de Walden.

On 19th December 1800 [his wife] Elizabeth Davers Countess Bristol [aged 67] died.

On 8th July 1803 Frederick Augustus Hervey 4th Earl Bristol [aged 72] died in Lazio. His son Frederick [aged 33] succeeded 5th Earl Bristol, 6th Baron Hervey of Ickworth in Suffolk. H3NG0wbdHis great grandson Charles [aged 4] succeeded 6th Baron Howard de Walden.
