Siege of Bristol

In 1643 Edward Fitton 2nd Baronet (age 40) died of consumption at the Siege of Bristol without surviving issue. He was buried at the Church of St James, Gawsworth [Map]. Baronet Fitton of Gawsworth Hall extinct.

Originally a canopied monument what remains of the canopy is fixed to the wall. His daughter Margaret Fitton who predeceased him kneeling.

Edward Fitton 2nd Baronet: In 1603 he was born to Edward Fitton 1st Baronet and Anne Barratt. Before 1631 Edward Fitton 2nd Baronet and Jane Trevor were married.

Margaret Fitton: Around 1631 she was born to Edward Fitton 2nd Baronet and Jane Trevor. In 1638 Margaret Fitton died.

His daughter Mary Wood Duchess Southampton (age 8) was his heir. In view of the great wealth she was to inherit she was betrothed to Charles Fitzroy 1st Duke Southampton 2nd Duke Cleveland (age 8), an illegitmate son of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland (age 40) and Barbara Villiers 1st Duchess of Cleveland (age 30). On her father's death she went to live with Barbara Villiers 1st Duchess of Cleveland (age 30). They, Mary Wood Duchess Southampton (age 8) and Charles Fitzroy 1st Duke Southampton 2nd Duke Cleveland (age 8) married 1679 but she died a year later from smallpox.

On 14 Aug 1671 John Lewis 1st Baronet (age 56) died without male issue. Baronet Lewis of Ledstone extinct. His daughters Elizabeth Lewis Countess Huntingdon (age 17) and Mary Lewis Countess Scarsdale (age 13) inherited his estates.

Elizabeth Lewis Countess Huntingdon: In 1654 she was born to John Lewis 1st Baronet. Evelyn's Diary. 24 Jun 1670. Came the Earl of Huntington and Countess, with the Lord Sherard, to visit us. On 19 Feb 1672 Theophilus Hastings 7th Earl Huntingdon and she were married. She by marriage Countess Huntingdon. He the son of Ferdinando Hastings 6th Earl Huntingdon and Lucy Davies Countess Huntingdon. He a great x 5 grandson of King Henry VII of England and Ireland. In 1688 she died.

Mary Lewis Countess Scarsdale: In 1658 she was born to John Lewis 1st Baronet. On 11 Feb 1672 Robert Leke 3rd Earl Scarsdale and she were married. He the son of Nicholas Leke 2nd Earl Scarsdale and Frances Rich Countess Scarsdale. On 27 Jan 1681 Nicholas Leke 2nd Earl Scarsdale died. His son Robert Leke 3rd Earl Scarsdale succeeded 3rd Earl Scarsdale, 3rd Baron Deincourt of Sutton, 3rd Baronet Leke of Sutton in Derbyshire. She by marriage Countess Scarsdale. In 1684 she died.

On or before 28 Apr 1673 Edmund Pye 1st Baronet (age 66) died. Baronet Pye of Leckhampstead extinct. He was buried on 28 Apr 1673.

On 05 Feb 1676 Thomas Trevor 1st Baronet (age 64) died. Baronet Trevor of Enfield in Middlesex extinct. His estates passed to Charles Wheler 2nd Baronet (age 56), grandson of his father's sister Mary aka Winifred Trevor.

On 18 May 1678 James Bowyer 3rd and 1st Baronet (age 33) surrendered the title of Baronet Bowyer of Leighthorne in Sussex; it isn't clear why he did so. On the same day he was created 1st Baronet Bowyer aka Goring of Highden in Sussex with the precedence of 23 July 1627 and with a special remainder to Henry Goring 2nd Baronet (age 56) who subsequently succeeded; it isn't clear why the special remainder was included since there doesn't appear to be any relationship between James Bowyer and Henry Goring.

He left Belton House [Map] to his great-nephew John Brownlow 3rd Baronet (age 20) (grand-son of his brother William Brownlow 1st Baronet) and niece Alice Sherard Baroness Brownlow (age 20) (grand-daughter of his sister Elizabeth Brownlow ) who had married three years before in 1676. He also left them an income of £9,000 per annum and £20,000 in cash. They immediately bought a townhouse in Southampton Square.

On 23 May 1684 John Salusbury 4th Baronet (age 47) died. Baronet Salusbury of Lleweni in Denbighshire extinct. His sister Hester Salusbury (age 47) and her husband Robert Cotton 1st Baronet (age 49) inherited his estates.

Before 20 Nov 1684 William Estcourt 3rd Baronet (age 30) served as foreman of the jury which acquitted Edward Nosworthy (age 46). During the course of the celebrations that followed in the Globe Tavern, Fleet Street an altercation broke out between Henry St John 1st Viscount St John (age 32) and Francis Stonehouse (age 31). William Estcourt 3rd Baronet (age 30) was killed by either or both Henry St John 1st Viscount St John (age 32) and Francis Stonehouse (age 31). Both were fined and pardoned. 1696 Plot to Assassinate King William III

On 28 Jan 1697 John Fenwick 3rd Baronet (age 52) was beheaded for his part in the 1696 Plot to Assassinate King William III. He was buried at St Martin in the Fields [Map]. Baronet Fenwick of Fenwick in Northumberland extinct. He was the last person to be executed under an Act of Attainder.

He was buried at St James' Church, Abbots Bickington [Map] where his ledger stone is inscribed: "To the memory of Sr. Ames Pollard, Barron(e)t, who departed this life June the 5th 1701 and was here interr'd the 7th of the same in ye 85th year of his age". Below is an heraldic achievement of Pollard showing an escutcheon of the Pollard arms: Quarterly 1st & 4th, a chevron between three escallops; 2nd & 3rd: a chevron between three mullets; overall the Red Hand of Ulster. Above the escutcheon is the crest of Pollard: A leopard's head and neck erased. Beneath is the following verse:

The estate of Aldermaston devolved on Elizabeth, Baroness Stawell (age 34), da. of his sister Elizabeth, by her first husband, William Pert. She d. in 1721. To its subsequent devolution, as given in Burke's Extinct Baronetage, may be added its purchase, in 1899, by Charles Keyser.

On 22 Feb 1712 John Reade 3rd Baronet (age 21) died of smallpox unmarried at Rome in exile having become a Jacobite. He was buried on 11 Jun 1712 in the Brocket Chapel at St Elthreda's Church, Bishop's Hatfield. Baronet Reade of Brocket Hall in Hertfordshire extinct.

Hamilton-Mohun Duel

On 12 Nov 1712 Charles Mohun 4th Baron Mohun Okehampton (age 37) duelled with James Hamilton Duke Hamilton, 1st Duke Brandon (age 54) at Hyde Park [Map] over a legal dispute about the estate and inheritance of the late Earl Macclesfield.

Mohun had married Charlotte Orby Baroness Mohun Okehampton grand-daughter of Charles Gerard 1st Earl Macclesfield. James Hamilton Duke Hamilton, 1st Duke Brandon (age 54) had married Elizabeth Gerard Duchess Brandon (age 32).

On 15 Nov 1712 James Hamilton Duke Hamilton, 1st Duke Brandon (age 54) died from wounds received duelling. His son James Hamilton 5th Duke Hamilton 2nd Duke Brandon (age 9) succeeded 5th Duke Hamilton, 2nd Duke Brandon of Suffolk, 2nd Baron Dutton of Cheshire.

On 15 Nov 1712 Charles Mohun 4th Baron Mohun Okehampton (age 37) died from wounds received duelling; his father had died the same way. Baron Mohun Okehampton and Baronet Mohun of Boconnoc in Cornwall extinct.

On 22 Oct 1713 John Cropley 2nd Baronet (age 50) died unmarried. Baronet Cropley of Clerkenwell in Middlesex extinct. He left an estate worth about £4,000 p.a. to Thomas Micklethwayte, described as a kinsman.
